When you were reading Diavola i was thinking that she should have "Carrie"ed them all! 😂. Yes, me and my friends played mermaid all the time. For some reason we had this thing where Captain Hook wanted to marry us but we didn't want to leave the sea and he would trap us and either skin our fins off (I know! Macabre!) or if we were out of the water too long our fins would turn into legs.
Yesss, she should have gone all Carrie on them!! I would have enjoyed that!

omg I'd never heard of My Darling Dreadful Thing, but it sounds up my alley! You also made me so much more intrigued for Chlorine even tho I've mostly felt very meh on the idea in the past.

I just finished the audiobook of Diavola earlier today and we have really similar thoughts on it! It was one of my most anticipated reads of the year- I can’t lie, I was sooo drawn in by the beautiful cover art- and I just felt like it didn’t live up to the hype. I wanted so badly for it to be a 4-5 star, but it was closer to a 3.5 for me as well (4 on Goodreads because I felt better about rounding up on it). It made me feel very anxious and sad mostly, and the horror elements that were present weren’t effective for me at all. I actually love dysfunctional/ estranged family tropes, but Anna’s family was actually just unbearable and I agree that I would’ve just not shown up or immediately left lol
My exact feelings too! I wish the horror elements had been the main focus, I get that the author was focusing on the family dynamics, but the horror fell to the wayside. I’m sorry you also didn’t love it and felt disappointed. 😭

I don't know if annoying or helpful to say the same comment or suggestion, but if you're still looking for disturbing books "To be Devoured" is probably my favorite and honestly disturbing in a good, long burn read. I thought about (still think about it when I bring it up in comments) and it's very interesting and the air of dread is great. 🖤

Diavola was on so many anticipated releases but tbh the premise doesnt stand out to me and the cover looks so gothic and doesnt seem like it matches the premise. I feel like your statement of leaving would be my exact same reaction so i think i would also just get frustrated 😂 your solidifying my choice not to read it lol

I DNF’d the haunting of velkwood around 35%, idk what it was either I just didn’t care about it at all!

I loved the Haunting of Velkwood and I DNFed Diavola; it just wasn't for me. 🤷♀️
