Out of the people who say Vriska did nothing wrong, most of them are the ones that look at her as a complex, interesting, and ultimately tragic hero, who tried to do the best, but was dealt a bad hand (Can't catch a 8r8). Out of the people who are left are mostly people who view her as an antagonist, or a sort of well-meaning but ultimately harmful and dangerous person. In the first group, the emphasis is on her good side, and in the second, on her bad side. So when people actually want to discuss Vriska, they talk to people who in the majority (not all) focus on her bad side. This is made especially difficult with people like Kate, who many view as quite dismissive (which I have seen her occasionally being- I think Kate's generally funny and likeable, except for a streak of dismissing people when they say they're hurt. That's not a hangable offence, half my friends have within the past month or two said things to me which were directly dismissive of my feelings- that doesn't make them bad people, just occasionally annoying when you try and open up) and through that general dismissiveness, don't view Vriska Did Nothing Wrong as a response to criticisms of Vriska's character, but as a dismissal OF those criticisms. Lots of people, including people who like Vriska, seem to have a hard time talking to VDNW folks about Vriska. VDNW fails as satire, because it isn't ridiculing and exposing a hidden idea or practice that is harmful, like the Tiananmen Square example makes the conversation around it a little bit easier to engage with. It's instead poorly representing an idea of Vriska as a sympathetic character. Since Vriska's sympathetic nature comes from her inability to catch a 8r8, and also her background and how her actions can be interpreted as attempts at helping those around her, twisted by her shitty hand in life, denying that those things happened, even as a joke, doesn't manage to act in its role as satire (which I do think it was originally created in some part to do- to be a funny thing to say once as you talk about what she did and how to read it). You've seen why I disagree, but just for the "sorta" part, I'd say that: I don't think anybody intended for VDNW to be seen as dismissive, nor do I think anybody actually believes that a select ream of pages in the comics dealing with Vriska's bad deeds just don't exist. I think it's probably something people say because engaging with Vriskcourse is difficult at the best of times, and a lot of times downright anxiety-inducing. Had things gone differently, I think it could've been the crowd who view Vriska mostly negatively who came up with and used a catchphrase to disengage. I like Vriska and generally agree that her actions were that of a scared little kid who didn't get a chance to have a normal life, and developed coping mechanisms as best she could- having the discussion would probably result in a generally favourable light for Vriska to be viewed in. None of the people who are saying VDNW are bad people (at least because of VDNW- if we find out somebody's going to jail for murder, I'd have to imagine it had nothing to do with VDNW) and the criticisms of someone like Kate seem based in an initial problem which was left unresolved and festered, because internet communication is awful and I could insult someone without realising, further insult them by not knowing why they were hurt, and then end up in a bitter feud with someone I've never met because of a throwaway tweet that, had we been talking, would have been a "sorry" and moving on with our lives. Not anybody's fault, but bound up in a shitty communication method that makes it difficult to resolve or address issues. In my mind, though, taking a closing ranks policy of just rejecting the idea that any issue existed has only made things worse- it's one of the reasons I don't discuss these things on twitter. Why is this comment mostly about the drama surrounding VDNW, rather just than the merits of VDNW itself? Mostly because context is the only way to understand this, and just talking about how VDNW isn't satire just means people choose "meme" or "joke" or "sarcasm" or some other label which means exactly the same thing fundamentally, but suggests something slightly different. If "It's a joke" is met with "it's not funny," then "it's a meme" is met with "it's not useful for communicating information," but the issue is fundamentally the same: that the defence that it *is* something is totally useless- I remember someone on Twitter saying it was like those YT reaction channels that say "it's a prank." It sounds like a defence, until you realise that it can be a prank and still bad or wrong or misguided or need tweaking or whatever. This conversation needs a holistic approach, which a tweet, or even a chain of tweets, can't give you. The discussion that would need to be had is too long and too emotionally vulnerable to have online, and there's massive impracticalities involved in meeting in person to discuss this, chief among them being that I live in the UK and most Homestucks live in the UK, so even if I wanted to meet up, it'd be several thousand pounds to settle one fandom debate, and also that you'd need to do this with EVERY Homestuck who was involved in this debate. Tl;dr Satire is not the right label for VDNW. And supposing that it was, that doesn't mean anything- someone saying that VDNW is a bad catchphrase is independent of how you'd describe said catchphrase in an English exam. If it's satire, it can be shit satire, or a shit joke, shit meme, shit sarcasm, etc. The conversation is around whether it is useful for discussing Vriska. I believe it's not, because it has become a substitution, as opposed to an addition, for the pages-long fan discussions of old. Also there's like a paragraph talking about specifically the Twitter wars over it, because I've pretty much only seen it on Twitter and I dont see a point vagueblogging about the platform on which this is happening and the people who are involved.
ok I don't know these guys and I'm 13 minutes in but they're literally saying why she's seen as a bad person while just agreeing (sarcastically it seems) with her. They seem to pretend to defend vriska while mocking people who actually defend her.
Mochi Cupcake nope... people actually say that unironaly, like that writer that works for HomeStuck and sells nudes of herself on her main account that minors follow and insults and blocks minors and adults like who disagree with her.
@@enderwalkgang ok what the fuck dude. I know who you mean, I know what they say about vriska and that's totally not it. I don't know where that fucking selling nudes thing even came from, but I see you have a lot of pinned up frustration with them. Chill the fuck out. And if you think blocking people who disagree with you is inheritly bad you clearly don't get dozens of people going to you to share your opinions that you have no obligation to care about, while being entilted and disrespectful. You don't like people who write homestuck, don't consume their content. You're free to go, it's hussie's decision who he takes for the team.
Now that I've officially listened to an explanation of Homestuck that begins with Vriska's _Flarp exploits_ and works outward, all I can really compare the experience to is watching Munchy's spirit science lecture, but in a parallel universe where he literally just wasn't joking. And also where Munchy looks like David Tennant fucked Megamind.
Uh, gonna be real, as someone who knows literally nothing about Homestuck, I'd say you only succeeded in making me slightly intrigued by this character. One thing that was clear and palpable is that this story is extremely dense, which led to you only briefly mentioning dozens of plot elements and characters in passing so that the lecture wasn't bloated to shit, but this also means I was juggling a lot of names and concepts, very few of which felt vitally relevant to empathizing with this character. It may have helped to instead spend 20 minutes or so laying down ALL the basic/essential ground rules, like Tom did at the beginning of his lecture. It's kind of a lot to be jumping into Act FIVE of a six-act story. I think giving a lecture to a room largely full of people who have all read Homestuck, who feel no need to ask any followup questions to clarify the details (in stark contrast to all the other lectures), contributed to this. Tom and Jesse are also the two PCP members most predisposed to not interrupt, even when not perfectly clear on something.
KeeBlade you basically have to read Homestuck. It’s like if Tom did a lecture on one character in Animorphs or one character is Guilty Gear, there will naturally be lots of skipping through elements of the story that don’t have to do with the character in hand. So the lecture becomes kind of niche and more like supplementary material, or as a way for you to think “fuck, idk what’s going on, better read Homestuck because some of this sounds interesting”
@@DripNZ Except it doesn't sound interesting because you understand nothing most of the time. Homestuck is too big to be explained(that's false but let's assume it's possible)? Then do a lecture on trolls and not only on a single character.
As someone who has only read Act 1 of Homestuck, this was an interesting look into what Homestuck actually is though obviously through the lens of one character. Still, it was an interesting listen if confusing at times.
Not gonna lie, most of this made me just realize Aradia was infinitely better than Vriska. Still, 90 minutes of talking about the Spider8itch is admirable. Respect.
She cripples her friends, minds controls them to blind themselves and kill their other friends while trying to involved herself in the just about every other bad thing thats happened in the series. The people behind the new comic are insane and should never be taken seriously for actually falling for the meme "Vriska did nothing wrong."
Wrong. The only thing "wrong" thing she did was having scandalous relationships with disgusting lowbloods. She shouldve fed tavros, aradia, karkat, and other lowbloods to her spidermom. It is the law.
3:02 would like to point out that not all lusii are violent giant beasts . Tarvros's lusus is a helpful(ish) little fairy bull , and Eridan's lusus doubles as his steed . Vriska has a comparatively abusive relationship with her lusus , putting her into a 'kill or be killed' world .
tfw you're the closest you've ever come to caring about Homestuck lore and a selection of idiots decide to much on cheese puffs randomly through out the second half of the lecture

Thank you so much for doing this, really liked the presentation and you and your friends are really funny, you stopped my urge from getting involved again (at least directly) with homestuck.
What's weird about the two sets of trolls is that the Alternians are the ectobiological "parents" of the Beforus crew even though the Beforians came before them (hahahaha). Aranea is Vriska and Terezi's "daughter" since creating a perfect paradox clone of someone is actually just creating the original person and purposefully messing with their DNA produces viable clones. Meenah's session had to be scratched in order to facilitate everyone's birth since Karkat was the one responsible for cloning the Alternian grubs and mixing their slime to produce the Beforians. Mindfang's story is even weirder in retrospect because she's fighting her half-sister and would go on to inspire a rivalry between her not-parents in the process. Being that the ancestors had to provide genetic material for the Imperial Drones without knowing that their parents would be sent to Alternia to act as their descendants, there are probably eleven trolls out there that are essentially direct siblings to the Sgrub players with the same surnames, symbols, and whatnot in comparison to all the other trolls that they're all related to due to the Mother Grub (except for Karkat because I doubt the Signless provided his coom before becoming the Sufferer). There is another Serket out there.

You've seen why I disagree, but just for the "sorta" part, I'd say that:
I don't think anybody intended for VDNW to be seen as dismissive, nor do I think anybody actually believes that a select ream of pages in the comics dealing with Vriska's bad deeds just don't exist.
Tl;dr
Satire is not the right label for VDNW.
*my dude bullied tavros*
wait did i just watch a cishet homestuck fan
those still exist?
Nope, she transitioned after this. Ben and Munchy are cishet tho.
LOL
Vriska Did Everything Wrong.
So did Terezi for refusing to save her other friends, holy shit.
You can like characters that do bad things and are bad people. Vriska did everything wrong and that's FINE
“Eight, you know, EIGHT you know like SPIDERS.” all while the audience just starts fucking murmuring absolutely destroyed me
Equius best boy
Vriska x Terezi is obviously the right choice and thats my only critique, but thank you for this whole bullshit ride, quarantine is now better.
Hard agree. Halfway through the lecture and I still have no idea what homestuck is.
>this story is extremely dense
So is the guy writing it, and all the fans. But it's all in good fun
Sadly, Vriska doesn't appear until halfway through Homestuck, which is to say in about a third of the way through Act 5.
As someone who has only read Act 1 of Homestuck, this was an interesting look into what Homestuck actually is though obviously through the lens of one character. Still, it was an interesting listen if confusing at times.
Honestly we need a whole Homestuck lecture from our worlds equivalent of eggbert, just the way he explains everything in this is perfectly John
liking vriska? pretty simp imo
that's why john did the presentation
Gib's voice is the basedest thing in the PCP followed by Gib and Tom themselves.
by far the most specific lecture as of yet
yo whens the lecture on the actual best character in homestuck and Vriska's direct superior Equius Zahhak?
you mean horuss zahhak
BOTH ZAHHAKS ARE FUCKING DISGUSTING AND I WISH I WASN'T A SAGITTARIUS
@@MwahahaBit You just can't accept the fact that Horuss is he best character ever conceived in any medium
Haha milk boy
Also ok karkat kin
Bro I am actually scared why would you make a lecture about simpinf for vriska
"She's the cool pirate lady"
"She does the mind thing."
she's the cool pirate lady she's the one who minds
Vriska was my favorite character! She's so fun and really spiced up the plot with what she did
Not gonna lie, most of this made me just realize Aradia was infinitely better than Vriska. Still, 90 minutes of talking about the Spider8itch is admirable. Respect.
the deepest depths of the fandom.
This is both informational and at the same time not informational for me so this is great I'm learning like a true Homestuck
@@aaaaaaaaaaaa9023 based
Never heard about HomeStuck or Vriska before but this lecture was pretty based, hope we get more lessons by Hippocrit-sensei
This is the first time I watch something from this channel and seeing an hour video on appreciating Vriska sent me into shock
3:02 would like to point out that not all lusii are violent giant beasts . Tarvros's lusus is a helpful(ish) little fairy bull , and Eridan's lusus doubles as his steed . Vriska has a comparatively abusive relationship with her lusus , putting her into a 'kill or be killed' world .
sending this to all the ppl who don’t simp over Vriska on the daily.
I tried reading homestuck, but I literally couldn't comprehend it.
Vriska was my favorite character anyway
Fuck my face Vriska is cute and I love her design
I was happily enjoying myself, then i realized this is one hour and a half long
The impaled Vriska plushie😭??
Apparently somewhere in the epilogues, Roxy was John's Ex-Wife.
Yeah. In meat she becomes trans with calliope, in candy she gets married with John and then things get complicated
Also, Vriska didn't die.
She just fell into the candy timeline.
@@appleseed8282 i guess he didnt get to that, since he said he didnt finish candy.
Epilouge? What are you talking about? Homestuck Ended on April 13, 2016 and nothing at all ever came after that. NOTHING AT ALL!!!
Tbh "somewhere in the epilogues" is the most cursed phrase I've ever heard for some reason.
tfw you're the closest you've ever come to caring about Homestuck lore and a selection of idiots decide to much on cheese puffs randomly through out the second half of the lecture
the homestuck fandom terrifies me
I am not even gonna watch the video. I am just gonna say good character, bad person.
yep. shes an interesting character to read about and i like her CHARACTER but as a person yeah no i dont excuse her actions
0:04 THATS A LONG ASS PEPSI, my european ass has never seen something like that
0:05 whoa audience cam!
0:07 ugh audience cam.
Can youtube stop reccomending this video to me? I've watched it twice already!
This is how I found out about Homestuck. I will never forgive you.
i hate you for being my introduction to Homestuck

The Pro Crastinators doing a lecture on defending Vriska is like a wierd hazy dream I would have but this is actually real.
Okay, i am not saying that this the cringest lecture so far.
I am just thinking it.

I always though FLARP stood for Fatal Live Action Role-Play...
Didn't know abstract bats were involved.
*vriska, eridan, gamzee and dave are the best homestuck characters, change my mind. oh wait, yOu cAnT~*
Glad im not the only grown adult still obsessing over homestuck after all these years. Can't say im a Vriska fan but this video rocks and I am here for it.
Thats kind of sad
@@zebrafishcat5256 sorry you feel that way? I feel no sadness about it 😆
The Kickstarter for Radcon 5 ought to have a stretch goal at like $50k for the fabled 13 hour long Homestuck Lecture.
i want this so fucking bad
Thank you so much for doing this, really liked the presentation and you and your friends are really funny, you stopped my urge from getting involved again (at least directly) with homestuck.
Man. I can't fucking believe that the universe *exists*.
This is lifechanging.
Never really stanned a troll, they're interesting yeah but I honestly loved the humans more. I'll simp for dirk till the end bro

Sound is so much better! Thanks for that shirt mic
The more I learn about Homestuck, the more glad I am it exists and the more I hate what it actually is.
Vriska's pretty cool though.
I never saw a better lecture.
I'm sorry, who is this Vriska you are talking about? I remember Davepetasprite^2 being the only character in Homestuck
Gib spitting straight facts
i saw this in my recommended and REALLY hoped it was just an april fool's upload
god i was wrong
what holy shit I didn't know about Homestuck 2
lol the Epilogues dropped like a month after I finished Homestuck and this video is literally the first time I hear about all that extra stuff
note nonpcp fan viewer that at the time of release this is not the last lecture that will be released from radcon 4 but it was the last one filmed.

one important thing is that vriska does not die in the epilogues. when she gets sucked into the black hole and is about to die she instead gets transferred to candy earth still close to dying but at least without the looming danger of a black hole
also in candy john and roxy get together and even have a kid
Is this hussie irl
It's weird how there are only guys talking about Vriska. Makes me worried about what are they're going to talk.
