Not the most portable, or the most sexy, but it has the best workflow of any device I’ve tried (also force, mpc live 2, maschine mk3, and some elektron boxes). Only downside is sound design being a little unintuitive. Would definitely love to see more companies try their hand at a deluge-like.

@@mcstabba Nah, OP-Z is sturdy. I've taken it to burning man multiple times carrying it around in a pocket and shit. Don't sit on your synths and they'll be fine. No hate to Yamaha, though- I want one of these.

This is something special. This is menu dive free. Electron and TE learned all they know from Yamaha, Korg and Roland’s hardware. Yamaha sequencers/arrangers/groovebox’s and workstation set the standard for live looping alongside AKAI MPC workflow. Synchronizing Audio and Midi. RS7000?!! This isn’t a gimmick, and I’m guessing it won’t be over priced. This is a game changer. I’m grateful to see Yamaha continually innovating and reimagining
So many functions only in the app where you dive deeeeep. (not saying app is a bad idead, but instead that there is you menu dive) IMO MPC workflow is horrible - it led nowhere except selling the MPC. This was MPC1000 and even supercharged with JJOS.
Although I live in the Elektron ecosystem and I am completely satisfied with their equipment, what Yamaha has done in this video is impressive. I like that they go beyond and create something more than just a groovebox. Beautiful design, beautiful software, original visualization. Keep it up!

There is lots of potential in these type of devices if the integration of tablets and phones works seamless. Because you can have the music hardware hands-on super-portable thing, but also stay connected and expand the workflow with more editing detail and depth, and all the community stuff going on.
This is going to be huge for Yamaha! Original? No, but it is the sum of its parts plus Yamaha quality that makes the difference. Also nice to see USB-C making it's way into Yamaha products now👍
Love the utilization of the vertical surfaces with labeled buttons. I still want an OP1, but I don’t want to pay for it. Which is why I’ll be getting one of these instead.
I have the OP-Z and this seems to be on that same vain, but with a more robust case. The price point definitely gonna shake up the market. Big TE fan, but also glad to see other manufacturers coming in to the market.
What is the point of a hardware synth if you need software on additional devices to access many of its features, you might as well just use software outright & save yourself this purchase. The point of hardware is to have freedom from software on computers.

You got me until you said that deeper sound design options are available only via the app. I don't buy hardware just to spend time with my computer. The app does not support an OS of my choice - in fact, it does not support any free OS. It's nice to see Yamaha being once again more active in the synth area though.
that cuts costs and even most mpc owners use that connected to their computers. It still is extremely ideal to travel with which also makes it ideal to perform live with.
Honestly, I like they way they handled it. A simple interface with basic options works really well for me when I'm focused on creating. The additional options being there through an external app is a bonus.
Because if you take this, the finger drumming sampler they came out with last year and the Mod X Operating system and put out a product with the features from all 3 in a product you would have a very strong MPC competitor.@@MRL8770

No, I'm an old grumpy 🍃art. I don't want to connect with apps that one day will say "Goodbye!". Instead I want full MIDI capable (CC, multichannel, non 96-division-only and all the jazz) QY like sequencer, with actual screen, preferably non pattern based or long enough patterns so they don't bother me much if I don't need them. Multiple midi outs so I can connect multiple synths to it. Onboard sampler would be a nice addition. Everything else would be a cherry on top.

Not bad, an obvious play for Teenage Engineering's segment, but I think the lack of even a simple seven-segment display is crippling, and the weird button placement around the outside is a daft idea. Funky design still needs to be good design.

Very good only the MIDI implementation is not standard , why every drum has its own MIDI track. How can one send all drums to channel 10 it’s not defined on manual. Also wireless MIDI seems to be out of questione.g. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are not supported for Windows.
Considering TE is charging $2K for an OP-1 reissue with what are essentially bugfixes, Yamaha is welcome to intrude on their territory as far as I'm concerned, and at a surprisingly fair price comparatively. So well done there. It's just that I find some design choices somewhat unrefined. For instance there are 12 knobs on the left side that seem to do wastefully little. Why not use them to give more real-time control, make it more hands-on? Also, it's great to hear high quality synth engines, but having only three instrumental tracks sounds limited to me. Maybe if one could store MIDI program and event data, and then bounce whole tracks to audio, or some other solution (a built-in looper or "tape" a la OP-1?). That could expand the functionality significantly. Sorry Yamaha for being critical, it's out of love. Looking forward to the next one!
I am a long-time musician, but newbie to grooveboxes. I just bought Circuit Rhythm but am having a challenging time wrapping my head around it. I am thinking of returning it and getting this instead. Would this be a bit easier for something fun, to make electro and lowfi hiphoppy stuff?

The interface is nowhere near as good as the QY stuff. This thing is app dependent.....Apps that won't work later anyway.

it has a built in midi usb host, although Iv feel like any modern synth sampler worth its salt kind of has to offer that or else be ignored.
