- After water, tea is the most-consumed beverage in the world. The latest trend for this traditional drink? Sustainable tea, produced affordably and without the use of pesticides, in a climate-neutral way, under fair working conditions.
What happened to the tea of our childhood? That’s the question Balts Tomas Kaziliunas and Hannes Saarpuu asked themselves four years ago. Before the fall of the Iron Curtain, Georgia supplied all of Eastern Europe with tea. And no wonder: the climate in that country is ideal for tea cultivation.
Tomas and Hannes traveled to Georgia - and stayed. They leased an overgrown tea plantation. It had lain fallow for 30 years, because Georgian tea production collapsed along with the Soviet Union. Now, the two adventurers are building an ecological tea plantation. And anyone can become a "co-farmer" online.
Aron Murro, Sven Bock and Leon Franken are also tea lovers. They’ve christened their start-up "KarmaKollektiv." The young founders want to produce tea and tea beverages as sustainably and healthily as possible. "I'm often told it won't work. And that's motivation enough for me to make it work," says Aron.
In the Indian state of Assam, plantation owner Ketan Patel is working on making his Jalinga Tea Garden completely CO2-free. He has a good idea of what this will take: After all, he has been growing his tea organically here for the last 17 years. Instead of coal, he now burns pellets made from plants. His next ambitious goal is zero-waste: "Everything that grows on the farm will also be used."

I've planted my yard with all sorts of herbs, fruits trees, etc. Permaculture gardens and local production of everything that will grow in your biome is the key. If we can get global trade concentrated on crops that grow substantially better in other regions - coffee, carob - and get so-called industrial regions to also farm, we might get organic farming and wildlife protection to go hand in hand.
This "documentary" sounds more like an advert for this brand of tea rather than an actual documentary on tea production.
On the contrary, all kinds of brand logos etc were excluded so it would not be an advertisement :)

I think this documetary is really good, Bangladesh has lot of tea state also many tea picker depend on tea state becouse more than two hundreds tea state in our country.
Nice concept & effort by the couple farmers but please pay your tea pickers more than 20 Euros per shift because they are doing a back braking job for you.

In the USA we have CSA’s that are helping small farmers to grow organic crops. This helps them with a better price for their crops and helps the consumer with a local organic product. When you cut out the middle man it really makes a huge difference.
Unfortunately some farmers are using this to charge huge prices for the products that local people can not afford
Not exactly why they are more costly, but think what you want! (Try feeding a chicken organic feed or buying Neem Oil & Sluggo for the same price as cracked GMO corn, or Sevin!)
@@ICU-mw7su I understand it to a point. Some of them in my area are gouging people that are trying to eat healthy. I don’t think that the cost of organic should be 10x the cost of non organic. I know what it cost to raise organic foods I currently have 30 chickens and am growing a garden using worm compost tea and chicken compost from the coop I also have priced horse manure that is not full of wormers and mixed with clean pine chips and straw. The cost are not nearly as expensive as people want to charge. They are not cheap. But they are doable. Even double the price is more fair but they are pricing way too many out of the market. I also order from azure standard for staples and have told many people about them for the price it is comparable to the grocery stores except the meat eggs and milk products. Unfortunately those are the most gmo products in the grocery stores.
@@Mindy56743 If you would sell your product you'd have several additional costs compared to now. I don't know the details for the US but certification isn't free. To sell organic food the whole process must be documented and controlled to make sure the claim is authentic and then there's the general costs of running a business etc.

My thought exactly how is that a fair wage? That’s only 120 weekly. It’s like making 2.5-3.3 euros an hour depending on if they work 6 or 8 hour shifts.

Tea. It's a weird drink. A taste you can't describe yet it was Britain that made tea vital for our nation & it's a life saver in body & mind in 2 world wars, that & cigarettes unfortunately.

I support this because they are doing ethical procedures instead of mechanical products and instead of using pesticides and insecticides they go about it the natural way. Wish west would go about this way. Be conscious about their damage. But that will never happen because they are driven by capitalism to turn out $$.

The tea plantations have been here for 60-80 years, so we did not acquire any new land to plant the tea. We also do try to keep the biodiversity as rich as possible on the plantation :)

But seeing these vast swaths of just one crop is troublesome to me. I see what planting just corn, wheat or onions for example, on a large scale, has done to our soil and ecosystem here in the United States and it greatly saddens me.

One more key point missed in this documentary is , Indian labour laws provide free medical security, Indian state and central government provides food security and many other incentives.
Indian labour laws are not enforced. You can just pay the labour commissioner to keep his mouth shut and continue with exploiting the poor.

Tea is such a useless beverage. I never saw its value... just plain water is better.
