Efficient post-harvest handling storage can tremendously contribute to socio-economic empowerment in developing nations. Farmers use traditional storage containers for storing food grains for their own needs. These storage structures are comparatively cheap, eco-friendly, and impart high shelf life to the stored commodities. These traditional storage systems could be applied in modern storage areas with minor modifications, could save food commodities that would be damaged by insects. Although chemical methods of management of stored products are highly successful, they leave behind toxic residues. The traditional wisdom and methods of storage can protect commodities from insect infestation for substantially longer periods.
What you're seeing in this video is one of the amazing traditional methods, which is normally seen in rural areas of south Karnataka, North Kerala, and some parts of Tamilnadu. Here they are storing paddy with the help of paddy straw and ropes. In the end, it looks like a small hut. By this method, they can able to protect paddy from rainwater, pests, insects, and predators like rats. But still, nowadays we rarely find this kind of storage system. there are many storage facilities too, but there is no proper, efficient storage facility like this.
Now the younger generation isn't interested in paddy farming. Because there is no profit in paddy farming.
So the government has to help farmers to get a good profit.
These traditional food grains storage and preservation practices can be improved upon or modified where necessary for effective grains storage to ensure the full realization of agricultural potential to meet the world's increasing food and energy needs. At the same time, farmers have to adopt this method to store their produce.
