Good technique. When I reference, I throw an eq with a band soloing function on the reference track and find where the punch of the kick and snare is and match mine up with theirs.
Im on a HelpMeDevvon run rn... watching all your videos - this is like one of the most helpful channels out there. Love you for that. You really help the community :)
Bear in mind before you apply processing, most samples from packs or Splice already be processed with EQ, Compression etc... Do what works best in your mix when selecting inserts to enhance your already placed samples, lastly if you do apply processing be sure to gain match so you can make sure the process is actually adding value as even 1 to 2db louder can trick the ears to believing it sounds better.
bro this tutorial was perfect, thanks so much for the simple steps, I'm always blown away by how some simple but tasteful eq and compression can do massive things to your mix
I keep stumbling on your tutorials they’re really helpful in theory all the techniques you’re using. The only secret you didn’t reveal in this video is that your snare is actually a clap 👏
You said its fine if the signal is clipping in the plugin as long as it aint distorting in your ears, I don’t agree to that. There is a reason of those red clipping lights being there. No matter how it sounds to your ears, its still clipping and it matters. You don’t have to send the clipping signal to the next plugin you add to the chain cause then it would have the clipped signal being fed into it and you won’t have any room and it does affect the sound and overall track and how the plugins react to it, especially compressors. I got this from Warren Huart from Produce like a pro. The rest of the video is super informative! Keep em coming bro! Cheers!
I disagree, it's all about your ears and the aesthetic you are pursuing, you can hear 40 Shebib talking about this in his Pensado interview, also guitar distortion are a good example of fucking things up work for certain genres and aesthetics.
@@MarianoGabrielConti i completely agree, but that's a different case. i was talking about how a lot of analog emulation plugins work better in their purposed state (when fed a healthy level signal) because that's the main gig they're programmed for. For me it opened a few doors properly gainstaging my plugin chains and comparing them to chains which would clip after each plugin. Then again i still really agree with thrusting your ears.
That's true, but red is also just a color. Let's use less time looking at the screen when mixing, and more time listening to what's happening. If it sounds good, it is good (at least to you).
do you make an audio wave copy of the kick to put the compression and limiter on it. Or can you just send the original kick to a bus and put the compression and limiter on the bus? is this the same thing?
Great video. My only note is that when you did the before and after I wish that you had verbally told us when it switched to the after. For newbies it may be harder to spot the differences because we're tryna figure out exactly when it switches.
i see you adding eq and smack attack etc, but do you gainstaging after adding this ? because in my situation it sounds better because the plugin is boosting the volume. hope you can answer. thanks boss
thanks man been trying to mix a certain beat and my kicks and snares are good but they probably need more compression and a little shaping up with an EQ I really thought there wasn't much left to do but now i've got a few ideas
I think he said he just put the compressed drum on a different track. Probably muted it for A. Doesn't level match, but they sound pretty different so maybe he figured we'd get the point.
I'm struggling with that CLA for parallel compression. Using your settings critically altered the sound of my snare. Yours seemed to be more of a subtle change. Mine was almost like a new instrument. Any tips?
Clipping means distortion, so your flattening out sines to a square, or your boosting that much up that the asio can not calculate it within the square which you can actually hear at 5:52. And that is not the cut in the video, its in the kick drum. all the rest of the cuts do not have this artifact.
What About Gainstaging Wise ? But having that same hard kick ? How can I achieve that ? Cause when I gain stage my kick I feel like the kick looses it punches
Love this video man. Thanks for the pointers. One thing I’d say is that clipping, as you already know, distorts the sound. So it won’t be in pitch and will not sound musical, and sometimes it might be difficult to decipher that using your ears.
Is the parallel compression channel receiving the snare raw, or is it receiving the signal from the channel with the effects on it? If It is receiving the snare raw would that mean it would be necessary to add an eq to the parallel compression channel as well?
Hey I see in this video you touched on gain staging a lil bit, but I dont think a lot of people really understand how important gain staging is on a technical standpoint in the digital world.
But if the signal is clipping it will be clipping into whatever plugin you use and depending on your plugin it can cause bad characteristics down the line so I like to put my clipped signal directly into a compressor at its default setting as the first step which stops the signal from clipping into whatever other plugins you put it in, then I usually use a gain plugin directly after to bring the dB down 2 or 3db and then I go on to process it. Everyone has their own way though and that really works for me. I get my drums loud
If you want to grab the template I’m using head on over to www.helpmedevvon.info !!
I feel like I've asked you this before but what brand of head phones do you use when you mix?
Been to an audio engineering school and I'm always here replaying these tutorials.
Good technique. When I reference, I throw an eq with a band soloing function on the reference track and find where the punch of the kick and snare is and match mine up with theirs.
Man I never would have thought of doin that. Thanks.
You’ve got some quality material bro
Thanks Devon . You are a life saver ! South Africa we in this !
this helped my kick and snare sit right in the mix thanks man!
Your tutorials are absolutely priceless.... You are such an amazing Tutor. Thumbs up Man
You are genius bro, you can't find what you're teaching anywhere else on youtube! Who's that one person that dislike this video?

Underrated comment 🔥

Thanks bro, glad to see producers helping each other out
Shit explained so well. And finally I understand parallel compression. So much love from Poland!
ciekawe ;-)))
Says snare, plays a clap
I was thinking that snare didn't sound that good
like it and SYFU ...
@@teamair1137 u stupid?
@@teamair1137 That ain't no fucking snare!
it kinda sounds like a clap and probably could be labeled as one but it can also certainly be classified as a snare even if it sounds like a clap lol
love this .......best video for hiphop mixing. got what i wanted
these videos are dope as hell man. You should also show people your writing process aswell
that compressed bass drum thing was eye opening. thanks a lot bro.
Best. I'm just getting into all of this and you explained everything so perfectly. I appreciate this!
bro you have one of the best channels for mixing. holy shit
Thank you sooo much, Devvon for all these tutorials you share with us❤️ much love 🙏
Smart movement bro. You are 100% accurate!!! CRazy accurate info. I hope they are listening.
Every video you do everything sounds so cool. I love how everything sounds liquid gold and fresh man :)
You’ve got the best mixing videos on UA-cam man
with a snare put a 550b on it and try adding 2-4 db to 180hz, gives some nice body
Jake Lewis Not going to work for every scenario some shit just has different Frequencies it would make more sense to say around not at or to
I am confused in this video why you do not do any subtractive eq on the kick. It also looks like you rolled off loads on the eq.
On the snare.
No snares were harmed or used in this video😂!
there was in blue tint lol
Buen video, llevaba varios dias tirandome de los pelos con un kick y siguiendo tus consejos ha quedado tremendo. Gracias tio!!
Man bro u taught me “Parallel Compression” years ago, and hands down the most valued thing i ever learned from mixing muzic…. Im forever grateful g🥲🙏🏾
@5:18 would that mean I can parallel compress if hard compress via a bus
I am learning so much from you! Thank you for producing these videos.

yea man, this is kinda true. You gotta gainstage a bit, some plugins work better if you feed them the right input level :)

“Don’t listen to clipping meters, your ears are the truth, but sometimes your brain perceives things as better but it’s wrong.” Oh. K.
Hey are you gain staging While referencing the drake mix
do you make an audio wave copy of the kick to put the compression and limiter on it. Or can you just send the original kick to a bus and put the compression and limiter on the bus? is this the same thing?
@help me Devon : what is the second plugin? I see the NLS but what is below that?
5:43 How much of the A-E Bus with the parallel compressor & limiter is mixed with the main track? Should I just put it all the way up?
I'm using Logic
So efficient way,,, many thanks to u

Thanks again for your great tutorials.
What is the StrF plugin under the NLS Channel?
@4:44 Where is the "All Function"?

do you use mixcubes?
Parallel comp is good for many things including total mix mastering.
Well Done. Good Job!
But do you mix und create your EQing with those Headphones? Or would you suggest to go with a dope room with pro speakers?
Do you always use a reference track for every single mix?
would i have to dual band that kick then side chain it to the 808 or thats to much ?
Bro you really know what your talking about when mixing. Love it
When you send to an aux for parallel compression don't you increase the level? How do you AB parallel compression?
I think he said he just put the compressed drum on a different track. Probably muted it for A.
Doesn't level match, but they sound pretty different so maybe he figured we'd get the point.

"your ears are the truth, not the meters." FACTS!

Whenever I try to parallel compress I get phasing issues. Also, do you also do drum bus compression for glue after all of this? Thanks!
I'm struggling with that CLA for parallel compression. Using your settings critically altered the sound of my snare. Yours seemed to be more of a subtle change. Mine was almost like a new instrument. Any tips?
you need to blend it in, don't use it all the way up the fader

5:15 what means blind in?
are the plugins your using mono or in stereo
nice video man. do u like smack attack better than spl transient designer?
So let me ask what plugin a clip/wave shaper? Would it be a limiter?
Is the parallel compression channel receiving the snare raw, or is it receiving the signal from the channel with the effects on it? If It is receiving the snare raw would that mean it would be necessary to add an eq to the parallel compression channel as well?
Did you buss the kick and snare (or clap) to the parallel compressor channel or were they literally just copied to another track? Thanks for this.
Great video!
Do you still keep the same mixing presets on the copied snare/ kick?
Hey I see in this video you touched on gain staging a lil bit, but I dont think a lot of people really understand how important gain staging is on a technical standpoint in the digital world.

yeo can you do a tutorial on how to route your sessions pre mix?
But if the signal is clipping it will be clipping into whatever plugin you use and depending on your plugin it can cause bad characteristics down the line so I like to put my clipped signal directly into a compressor at its default setting as the first step which stops the signal from clipping into whatever other plugins you put it in, then I usually use a gain plugin directly after to bring the dB down 2 or 3db and then I go on to process it. Nice sentence " whenever things are turned loud brain perceives them to be better, but it is not the case ". True indeed
What plugin is used for the kick and the snare?
