I was a trucker for about 5 years and then while I was on the road, thousands of miles from home, I found your channel and completed differential equations for fun. I have since vowed to only buy electronic books from then on. Today, virtual my book collection follows me everywhere in my iPhone, iPad, computers & backed up in the cloud. I can travel light & moving is no longer a huge headache. Yes, I do miss the tactile experience & the smell of real paper books, but I cannot deny the improvements in freedom & convenience. I went from an entire library room full of double shelved books to one 6 shelf billy bookcase and one three shelf billy bookcase. I thought it would be so difficult! Mine went to the local library book sale. Probably eight or nine pickup truck loads later, I was done. What a weight off my shoulders! Now I have a one in-one out policy. You can’t take it with you. I don’t need to have them just to have them, collecting dust. It has been so freeing.

    Have you considered options like
    1. Renting some storage unit to stash them away while you are travelling? I believe such services must be common and affordable in the US given that a large part of the population are not permanent home owners.
    2. Lending them to some local library with the agreement that you still reserve full ownership of them and can take them back when you wish? Apart from some minor kerfuffle in adding/removing them from the catalog (and perhaps some legal formalities), this should be a win-win proposition for the library.
    3. Same as (2) above, but distribute among friends/colleagues/students instead of a library? Admittedly not very practical overall, but perhaps may work for a small fraction of your collection that you neither want to carry around nor part ways with.

Selling the items you love is not easy. As an extremely experienced eBay seller, I am sure many of them will sell for more than a penny. Also put a little extra in the shipping cost to cover eBay fees on shipping cost. this will allow you not to lose money. in the continental US you can ship a 2 lb book media mail for $5.50 or so. I would charge $7 shipping to cover ebay fees and to ensure you do not lose money.

I've had to do that a few times, so I know how tough it is. I first did it after my foreign study abroad ended and I needed to return home. Then again when I moved out of the country. While I did my best to limit my collection to only my most favorite, ultimately I regret loosing a number of those books. (And even the books that I did keep they were so expensive to ship...)
Even now my bookshelves are too full. Every few years I need to get rid of some books and it is always so difficult. I guess that is the pain of being a book lover. Best of luck to you.

It's not just the books the it's also the friends you made studying those subjects, the person that recommended the book to you, the person you got the book from, the other significant life events that were going on in your life when you studied that subject, the excitement you felt when you first opened ed, and yes in some cases the history behind them.

I probably have as many books as you, with a high concentration in math, physics, chemistry, and neurosciences. I have purchased these books extremely selectively over the course of my life, not as a collector but as a useful library that I consult at any time I become involved in or have a question on a specific topic or get an intense "brain itch" that I need to scratch. I been doing this throughout my life and I still have books that I have purchased since the 1950's and very seldom have sold or disposed of any. The older books constitute the comprehensive summation of a person's ideas on a subject that he/she has mastered and are conceptually from a different world and mindset than most books of today that are a written on the basis of "publish or perish"
I have these books on my shelves not as a show of my learning, but as a testament to my ignorance since if I knew the material they contained I would have no need to have the book.

Hans in Luck (Hans im Glück)
Hans has been working hard for seven years but wishes to return to see his poor mother. His master pays him his wages which amounts to a lump of gold the size of his head. Hans puts the gold in a handkerchief and starts out on his journey jogging but soon becomes tired. He spots a rider on horseback and seeing the ease at which the horse travels he offers to exchange his lump of gold for the horse. Happy with the exchange, the man gives him the horse and Hans rides off.
The horse bolts and Hans gets bucked off, whereupon he meets a shepherd who convinces Hans to trade his horse for a cow. Telling Hans that a cow can provide milk, cheese and butter and is of more leisurely company. Hans takes up on the offer and continues his journey only to find that the cow is dry and not producing any milk as he had been told.
Disgruntled with the cow, Hans meets a butcher who gives him a pig for the cow. Thanking the butcher for the pig Hans sets off jogging again, hopeful he has now found an ideal travel companion. Alas, Hans meets a countryman who informs him that the pig's owner is the squire and he is in danger of being arrested for taking the squire's pig. Hans takes the countryman's goose in exchange for his pig, happy that it will provide a good roast and a supply of goose fat.
At his next stop in a village Hans meets a scissor-grinder and explains his story to him. The scissor-grinder offers him a grindstone for his goose arguing that a grindstone will provide a source of income. Hans happily exchanges the goose for the grindstone. He continues on his way, but is tired carrying the grindstone and is short of money for food.
Hans stops for a drink on the banks of a river, the grindstone falls into the deep water and is lost. Hans is happy to be rid of the heavy grindstone and being free of all troubles. He walks on to his mother's house and recounts his lucky tale.

Dont be sad, one moment they might come back, imagine some day you buy some of them and you see your own writing on the book and like the important is if you got some knowledge from it, the book is not just the outside, it is the ideas inside of it and you can take this ideas to your mind so part of these books are probably inside of your mind, they will always be part of you.

Your channel has a special place in my heart and I also love to collect science books. I have a question about some math book I enjoyed but have lost on my old HDD: this is a math book about programming, it has a lot of small paragraphs about some programming concepts/datatypes, each always starts in simple language and quickly turns into very advanded lands. I don't remember anything about it even the file name except of few bits of its content:
A function y = f(x) is an equialent of an endless array of pairs x[i] and y[i]
If you have the set of requirements P and your program succeeds the set set of requirements Q where Q is stricter than P then the customer will be satisfied
And several ways of saying "all is not lost" on a purely math language where the last word is represented with regular letters and the rest - with Latex.

this is the problem with 'collecting.' i had to get rid of my vinyl collection of 50 years, art books, electronics lab etc. i got 300 bucks for the records and the guy told me it was all 'waste.' no way i was gonna lug it across the country. he gleefully threw it all in his truck when the deal was done.

We had recently moved my mom who is In her 90s and had accumulated seven decades of sewing and quilting books which we had to trim down, It prompted me to do the same at home getting rid of 16 boxes of books most were more recently acquired books, others were on the same topic or topics I was no longer interested in. I I kept the three best books for each topic and chucked the rest. Try to keep one book for each math topic and keep your old ones. Take care. PS Why not place them in storage? it might be cheaper than selling at a loss and paying postage.

I really love pdf's and collected a lot of science and engineering that way. Karlsruhe or Munich have a great number of linked libraries. Each individual library has a day in the semester where you can give them books. They either add them to the collection so you can read them there, or they get sold or given away at the library.
    Enjoy your travelling!
