- Robots. Zippy's playing with his toy robot, and soon he and the others start to wonder what life would be like if they had a real one. Geoffrey comes up with an idea to show them that they may not be the answer to all of life's problems. I believe that this is the final episode of series 15, originally broadcast on Friday, 27th July, 1984.
This is a really strange one, with an odd construction and its oh-so-futuristic technology. And what do Rod, Jane and Freddy look like? There's just something of a weird air to it all, which is a bit of a trademark for Stanley Bates. Yes: this episode was written by Bungle himself. Stanley's magnum opus was probably the 1986 Christmas special, which at times crosses over from the bizarre to the outright sinister (not necessarily a criticism), but at least we don't go quite that far here. I've no idea what the skit at the beginning was all about, though, with those R2D2 and C3PO wannabes. How odd.
I do think there's a fundamentally good message on show, thought, and Geoffrey's malicious compliance makes the point well. I think there's a bit of a blunder around 4:40 where he forgets to take away Zippy's squash, but it's covered well as Zippy himself hides it and then giggles to himself in the background. Obviously we're also treated to a robot-themed song, and the story Jane reads us is Robox Lends a Hand. (Listen out for a nice little "Simple, pimple" sneaked in before the event, if you get what I mean.)
Many thanks to Lee for providing this recording, and apologies for having to snip out the opening titles.

That robot drawing reminded me of metal Mickey loved rainbow as a kid
3:57 Geoffrey has become a Cyberman.
And Zippy (a.k.a. Roy Skelton) is a Dalek. Was Bungle ever the Doctor's assistant? ;-)
@@VideotapeFTW Yes I know. I am a Doctor Who fan.
Did Kraftwerk try to sue Rod, Jane and Freddy?
14:06 Did Bungle Reference Disney’s The Jungle Book?
0:25 R2D2's Cousin.
I so remember this episode! Those two robots at the start (based on C3PO and R2D2) wouldn't have looked out of place in an episode of Dr Who.
The idea of this episode was also reused in an episode of Sooty, the one where Matthew becomes 'Robbie the Robot'.
Now all this episode needed was a cameo from Kraftwerk to top it off... ;-)
What is amazing here is that Jeffery sounds like the original Cybermen that was originally voiced Roy Skelton , by the bloke who is the voice of Zippy and George
Lady Gaga wishes she owned Jane's robot catsuit and wig.
lol you're right, this is a pretty strange episode. Also I wonder if those two robots props at the start were used for any other tv shows over the years. I can't imagine they made them and only ever used them for that short 1 minute segment
Yes, that does look like a lot of effort for what's basically a throwaway scene. Perhaps Thames were making something science-fictiony at the time - I'll have to look into it!
Nice
Yeah
Robox looks like the Tin Man in 'The Wizard of Oz'.
The man who voiced George and Zippy also voiced Daleks.
And the original Cybermen
I remember this episode. I'm not sure if it was the last in the series, but it was DEFINITELY shown on a Friday in 1984 - I remember that because it was the only day of the week my mother allowed us to watch TV in school uniform. This episode fascinated me because I always wondered how Geoffrey was able to do that robot voice. It was also unusual for Rod, Jane, and Freddy to have their voices heard immediately after their song.
Haha - what a great reason to remember what day this was broadcast! And, you're right - the Rod, Jane and Freddy numbers normally existed in their own right away from the rest of the action, but here it crosses over with the main storyline. I hadn't picked up on that.
Yeah
Very funny
The guy that's sitting down is Bungle actor Malcolm Lord.
Rod Jane and Freddy were a bit like The Rah Band.
Nice Episode
The Robot, I remember when Romeo had his Robot in PJ Masks
That makes a change! Zippy isn't interested in his food 😱 lol
I would imagine that kids were freaked out by the tall robot at the start; Uncanny Valley and all that. I reckon a lot of dads enjoyed watching this with their kids too and seeing Jane in her futuristic get-up.
RJF discovering Depeche Mode. There was at least one other Robox story (read by Geoffrey) but not with the fake German accent.
If you had a nervous breakdown this will cheer you up😅😅😅
