Thanks Kathie! That’s useful to know - can you pin down what was made then 2-5-1 segment less effective for you? I’m always trying to improve the way I do these things, so any feedback like that is always very useful 👍
Thanks Sabrina! Editing Bill has to jump in occasionally because Recording Bill forgets to say stuff even when it’s written on a big bit of paper right in front of him 😂
Thanks you for this video. I'm a 57 year old beginner and I've just started learning about the circle of fifths and chord progressions and this cleared up so many questions on how the progressions are built. I had been trying to make sense of it for the past several days and your video made it clear. I'm guessing that with experience and practice a person would be able to figure out chord progressions quickly. Right now it's a daunting task. The noisy clan decoder looks like a very useful tool. I've been watching your videos for several years and the way you explain things clicks with me and makes sense. Thank you for all the time and effort in making all these! I really appreciate it 💟
You're really welcome! Yes, figuring out chord progressions quickly does get easier with experience and practice... at least in familiar keys. If you jumped out at me and shouted "name the I V vi IV in F sharp major!" I'd probably hum and haw for a moment or two before I got there...!
This was a mini-course in chord progressions. I especially like your explanations about how the various chord sequences can be used to express the composer’s emotion intentions. Now, here is a problem for me. I often go to my piano with the intention of learning a song, you know, a melody that comes with chords and rhythm. But soon I find myself playing the chords. And then I start manipulating the chord inversions. Then secondary dominants, some substitutions, and so on until I have spent my hour or two lost in chord euphoria. I stop and am happy, but I still don’t know my song. I need a disciplinarian. I also often get caught up playing finger exercises for long periods (specializing on 10th chord stretches and finger twiddles using fingers 3, 4, & 5.) I ordered the new chord sequence device. I know I will love it. Now, please find me a device for learning songs. Cheers. 😊
I'm glad you liked it, Robert - thank you! The situation you're describing there is quite an interesting one in itself, because that kind of activity (just playing around with chords, experimenting etc etc) is something that lots of adult learners could really, really benefit from, but many are nervous about doing. So personally I'd try to impose that song-learning discipline on yourself without losing the "indiscipline" of free improvisation. Regarding song learning, I don't know how you feel about apps, but have you tried something like iReal Pro? It has lots of song libraries, doesn't charge an extortionate amount (and I think it's still one-off fees) and gives you things like backing tracks/adjustable tempos and keys etc etc - I use it for learning new jazz material. Just a thought - might be a way of giving yourself a bit of structure!
Ahhhh - well spotted Morgan! I knew I would get them the wrong way round at some point and checked the whole 40-minute video twice. But there was always going to be one 🤣

Great work as ever Bill. We can rely on Bill!!
The Thin Ice, by Pink Floyd, uses the I vi iV V progression. From the album The Wall, released 1979.
21:34 Really liked and could follow easily until 2-5-1 segment

Loved this! Self-taught, enjoyed this a lot. "Editing Bill" made me laugh. I hope he keeps 'Marching In'. 😂❤

I wish to hire "Editing Bill" to provide additional context (and some edits) to various life events! 😎

@ thanks, Bill.
I’m a chord nerd. And a tank top nerd - top work on both counts 🎉
Also I hear you keep Star Wars figurines in your trombone case
Nerd top 😂😂 that was me in the 80’s!
Hey just a quick thank you don’t comment much but love your videos 🎉 have a great day
You're really welcome - thanks for the comment, and you too!
Fun fact about the 2-5-1: The 2 is the 5 of the 5, so it is basically two stacked 5-1.
15:28 "I V vi IV" -- don't you mean. "I vi IV V?" Ah, who did you expect would be watching, fifteen minutes into it? I'm a Chord Nerd!!!
