    Thank you for another stellar audio review! I agree, I loved my MG Pro's when I owned them. I have never heard the OG version, but had to part ways with the MG Pro for personal reasons. I was a bit surprised on your thoughts on soundstage for them as I felt they were not very wide at all...but I do know they can react differently depending on the amp. So always good to hear different perspectives!

    Your description of the Elex is the EXACT reason I moved on from a Stellia and Elegia and traded for an Empyrean. To me the technical capability of the driver and that Focal tuning of emphasizing the upper mid-range just destroys lesser quality recordings. I found myself no longer enjoying listening sessions when the resolution capabilities aren't paired with a tuning that accommodates different types of genre. I do respect Focal headphones, the resolution on the Stellia is bananas, it can also be violently impactful when well driven but ultimately defeats the purpose of why I listen. I couldn't enjoy half my library but between and Empyrean and an Arya I feel like all bases are covered. Appreciate the video ✌️

    Great review Brian! So in my journey of the endless rabbit hole known as audio, I've had two Clear MGs and one OG. Yeah... 2...I sold the brown turned around 6 months later and grabbed the pro (red/black). I've since sold the pro and the OG. I love all the Clears, but I traded up to a ZMF Verite.
    Your impressions were similar to mine. OG is a wicked bang for buck, but I ever so slightly prefer the smooth nature of the MG. Truthfully, LCD-X was my favorite before venturing into ZMF land, but agree that the weight is just too much.
    It's funny, LCD-X was my first venture into the $1k headphone range. Your review you said "I haven't heard Arya, Clear, or 800s, but now I feel like I have to". I had to as well lol... Literally had all of those at some point 😅... I'm so broke!

  • @flockofwildcactus
    @flockofwildcactus 2 роки тому +7

    Enjoying the recent audio-related reviews, you have a great attention to detail. The Focal Clear (OG) is one of the better tuned highly resolving dynamic driver headphones - back when it was like $800-900 I'd say it was a good value. The Elex is...fine...but you're better off with a Senn HD6__ variant, AT ATH-R70x (or I'll concede, the Sundara too but be wary of build quality) IMO. Elex can be modded/tuned to get better balance, though.

    • @badseedtech
      @badseedtech  2 роки тому +4

      Thanks! Luckily, the Clear OH is still right at that price. Probably the best dynamic under $1000. I think that's probably why I'm a little lackluster on the Elex - I expected them to be better than the 6XX and I wouldn't say they're that. Interesting on the R70x - haven't heard that one yet.

    • @flockofwildcactus
      @flockofwildcactus 2 роки тому +1

      @@badseedtech Indeed! The R70x is worth a try, it has pretty good ergonomics/build quality and if I had to describe it in a single phrase, it's basically a Japanese HD600 in terms of tonality/tuning with a bit better bass response and a tad wider perceived 'soundstage'. Cheers!

    Pro Tip for Focal headphones: get a headband cover ASAP. The suede-like material they use gets gross fast. The earpads are easy to replace but expensive, but the headband is not easy to replace since the material is permanently attached and Focal won't sell you a replacement headband.

    • @aqulex84
      @aqulex84 2 роки тому +1

      Well as all suede and alcantra material it's easy cleanable if you're know what you're doing. This is just another artificial fabric that can be recovered to "new looking" Standart with some good cleaners. Me as a car guy deals with this fabrics a lot and they are all recoverable with the right cleaners and some dedication to detail.
      Sure a cover can prevent this but takes the look of it in my opinion so there are other options. Just for info.

    Great review!! Own the 1990 Pro and Clear Prof OG. Both have curbed my headphone addiction. Use the 1990 pro to mix/master and Clear Prof OG for pleasure listening. Both are amazing imho. 1990 Pro definitely has less low end and increased high end clarity to my ears. Can hear every mistake in a master even laptop computer fans. Love the enhanced clarity and is worth the price (best mid tier HP imho). I do recommemd the Prof version Clear OG since you get a second set of pads (not cheap - $200 for free) vs the silver OG. Don't really have issues on either HP (some do) without nit picking. Intrigued by your perceived increase in the high end comment on the MG. Would possibly help in my mixing and give me more low end then the 1990. The MG definitely look better with the new grill design. From the second I experienced the Clear OG I knew I found what I desired in a HP. Adding more icing to the cake without drastically chaning the sound signature sounds like a win. May need to try them out now - bank account hates you.

    The thing with headphones (and in fact all high-end audio) is: you will get less increase of SQ with higher price range. So, on a X - Y scale with X being price and Y being SQ, you will get a flattening line. With a Focal Utopia, costing 3 times as much as a Clear MG, you will only get maybe 3% increase in SQ. I've owned the Clear MG for 2 years now, and absolutely love these cans. The only disappointment is the quality of the ear pads. They wear out pretty quickly, and even some of the stitchings are gone, which - in my opinion - is just not supposed to happen.

    I got my Elex when they hit $550 and I had another $50 off from other store buy discounts so I just had to buy them. Sadly they just can not replace the Sennheiser 6xx for me in any way. They are less comfortable due to weighing twice as much, they don't have the same music tonality that I have come to love from the 6XX especially on a tube amp. I do pull them off the shelf from time to time just to see what it is that I don't like about them and I just can not pinpoint it. Though I feel the same way about my Beyerdynamic DT177X GO's as well. Neither of them have been great to me. I own a plethora of $500 and less headphones and the 6XX is always what I seem to reach for. Though I will say that before I got the 6XX I literally wore the pads off of my 58x and I love them still to this day. Also I balanced modded my Beyerdynamic DT880 600 ohm, and they get probably the second amount of use out of my collection.

Im looking at audeze lcd x , focal clear mg professional, hifiman arya organic, hifiman he1000se, sennheiser hd800s, audeze mm500, fostex th900 or th909. I like bass and sub bass so much. Which 2 would you choose? Maybe something i didnt mention? Thanks!

    I owned the elex and kinda felt the same. I would give them a solid b grade for overall sound and build. It was overall solid in just about everything. I can never figure out the what or why, but it was the fact it just had nothing that made me wanna take off another headphones and put them on. Solid performance and sound, just forgettable. I own the og now and really like it

    Thanks for the details B. I've heard from others the Sundara has the widest soundstage of all the headphones right now. Well...by others, I mean one guy but I like that guy. Do you/chat feel this way about the Sundara? I'd like to try it one day especially if it's $300. I gotta get this gaming headset off my head one day for a true pair of cans.

    • @432HigherMind
      @432HigherMind 2 роки тому

      The sundara definitely doesnt have the widest soundstage of all headphones. If you want wide listen to an HD800s. If you want wide and extremely deep try an Arya or and He1000se. There are many headphones that put the sundara to shame in every aspect. But of course they are a lot more expensive.

    Finally some audio! Honestly, at this point I‘m fine with anything audio related, but I have a few suggestions:
    Hifiman Edition XS? How does it compare to the Sundaras, which is better for who?
    Entry level balanced DACs & Amps (maybe a round-up?)
    Because of you I first bought the HD6XX last year and I loved them ever since. Currently I‘m on a JDS Labs Atom+ stack with my DT1990s, but I still whip out the 6XX on a regular basis. I‘m also keen to get a new pair, and I would love to hear your thoughts to inspire me to spend more money.

      Best bet is to visit a hifi shop to demo as sound is very subjective and everyone has different ears and perceive sound signatures in different ways.
      Atom+ stack is going to slay most of your needs, I can't see why you'd need to upgrade unless you have crazy plans. I'd spend the money going bigger budget on your headphones in all honesty.
      From the 6XX I'd aim to skip the Edition XS and save up for the Arya or these Focals

    So I’m coming from the LCD-X pre 2021. I like the crazy technical capability but the totality sucks without EQ. Do you think the OG clear would be a good option to replace it? I think being a dynamic driver the tonality would be more natural but I’ve heard the technical resolving capability of the clear is pretty good so I’m wondering how good it would be compared to the LCD-X

    The ifi Zen Air Dac is probably one of the best releases for the budget audiophile crowd. I think that you should make a video but not before telling your buddies about it before they raise the price when all the big reviewers start covering it. (I am also in love with the Tripowin x HBB Olina, but I don't know if that is just because I am not as deep into the IEM world as I am in the headphone space. Very very solid IEM for the price imo.)

    Maybe the OG would be more for me because the Clear MG sounded very muted in the highs for me. Coming from an Arya, lcdx-2021 or HD8xx part of the highs were missing, cymbals sounded cut off to me. Maybe those concerns many ears back took their toll on my high frequencies.

    • @soulfulfool

      They have very good bass, only few songs can make them clip on high volume, now I have learned to live with them and its just fine. Those drivers are so sensitive that you can lightly blow at them and see them move. Heavy duty bass cans are most likely those with planar drivers at least for me

      This is going to sound kind of crazy.. but I am very curious to see what you would think of the Soundpeats H1 with Comply 500 tips. I know - $100 true wireless buds including the comply tips are absolutely NOTHING like open ear cans. But if you want to find something great to use on the go or at home, I am utterly astounded by these little things, with the additional isolation from the too long comply 500 tips the sound quality compares shockingly well to some of the highest end headphones and IEMs I've ever heard at literally 20x the price, and that includes the Clear OGs.

    Someone else said it but do yourself a favor and pickup a headband cover for the OG Clears asap. I wish I put one on mine day 1, it's not bad but it's no longer pristine. The material is my biggest complaint with these headphones.
    As for the ear pads, I didn't even get a year out of mine before trying to wash them. It didn't work and the material got ruined so I wouldn't try that again. I have replacement pads but I would probably factor in yearly pad replacements, if not every 6 months. I don't wear mine daily and they still got thrashed.
    It's actually a huge con with these headphones

The short 3.5mm - 3.5 mm is useless. I got a longer 3.5mm - 3.5mm with a Beyerdynamic DT770 that was a sixth of the price. No excuse for cheap cables with a expen$I’ve set of cans

    The Clear is not all metal. It's astonishing how it has escaped you that the housing (the part that the yokes are connected to) is made of plastic considering how cheap and low quality is feels and looks. The internal part of the headband is also made of plastic, which is prone to snapping.
