Gospel Hymns
Doris M. Akers (b. Brookfield, MO, 1922) wrote both text and tune of this African American gospel hymn in 1953 in Oakland, California. The text is an earnest plea for an intimate walk with God, who is asked to lead, guide, and protect the believer. The deeply personal stanzas emphasize that divine guidance is essential because of our lack of strength, our blindness, and Satan's temptations. Only God can lead us on the narrow path and through all the complexities and challenges of earthly life. Like many of the psalms, this text pours out in prayer the yearning of the individual Christian, a prayer that reminds us of these words of the psalmist:
Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness;
make thy way plain before my face.
For it is thou, Lord, thou, Lord only
that makest me dwell in safety.

Akers had an active career as singer, choir director, and songwriter. She wrote her first song at age ten and since that time has composed more than three hundred gospel songs and hymns, most of which we republished by Manna Music (including 'There's a Sweet, Sweet Spirit in this Place"). She resides in Columbus, Ohio.
My father was a dementia patient.this was his favorite song My sister would play this video for him and tears would streams his face and he would sing some of the words in his feebleness at the age of 96. June 19 2020 he stepped into eternity with theses words and we praised God at the funeral the same way. It was so well with his soul. Thank God and your church for this recording. It will forever more be in the life long memory of us when we think of our dad.

I saw this video and scrolled passed it but the Holy Spirit made me scroll back but I scrolled passed it again and again he made me scroll back this time I’m so hard he did. Brothers and sisters God knows what we need and when we need it and this is exactly what I need I am struggling with some things. Lord I need you to lead me, guide me along the way because if YOU lead me I will not go astray. Saints pray for me , Saints pray for me that the Lord not take his mighty hands off me for the devil seeks to devour me but I know that the prayers of the righteous availath much. Whoever posted this video God knew that someone like myself would come across it at the right time to be lifted up.

Sometimes you need God to lead you to make sure you are going in the right direction with making important decisions. God is good. Bless the Lord! This takes me back to being a young boy at my Home Church that I grew up in. Mountain Ridge Baptist Church in Dalton GA. This was the song we would sing every Sunday morning at the beginning of the service. R.I.P. up there Rev. Henley, your positive influence is still felt by me all these years later.

I came to Christ through these songs when I was a child ,was baptized, these will never go away the power of the Lord are in these songs, I will never get tired of hearing them, my family were gospel singers and they sang a lot of these songs I missed them. Every thing is so contemporary now that they don’t hardly sing them they fill it’s to old school. More soul came to Christ then more than now. People want to be entertained and more of a talent show.
