- Cedric Hardwicke and Freddie Bartholomew star in this adaptation of Thomas Hughes’s famous novel. Oscar nominated director Robert Stevenson (Mary Poppins) gets help from a majestic musical score by threetime Oscar nominee Anthony Collins (Sunny, Irene) cinematography by Oscar nominated Nicholas Musuraca (I Remember Mama, Cat People), and costume design from Oscar winner Edward Stevenson (The Facts of Life). Need more convincing? The film’s art direction was by seven time Oscar nominee Darrell Silvera (Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons). To say this film has an impressive pedigree is an understatement!

Freddie Bartholome was one of the best child actors in that era. His parents spent all his money. By the time he got out of his teens he was broke. It’s a wonderful thing to see his movies. Thanks for sharing.
Loved watching it ❤
My VHS machine JUST ate my last copy of this AMAZING FILM! - Thank You for posting this!
Merry Christmas! - Judson & Buddy! - God Bless You ALL!!! 🙂
Nothing today can touch this film. This what young people should aspire to be. How sad it isn't that way any longer.
what you getting at!.....😈
We need to repent & turn back to GOD/ELOHIM/CREATOR! 2 Chronicles 7:14!
A Classic.
Thank you for posting this. 🇺🇸 🇬🇧
Marvellous film with a great cast and story. 1951 uk version also outstanding.
Jimmy Lydon was a gifted actor • He made incredible decisions •
He went on to become Johnny Rotten in the Sex Pistols I think
Thanks for this great oldie
Splendid story about being honest, God-fearing, courageous, and how such seeds are planted in the garden of the minds under his rule and blooms! ❤️
Those will come back, they always do. The seeds planted in the recent generations have reared this current horror show of soft heads, blue hair & bull rings, but already the pendulum is swinging back to what remains true, good & beautiful.
Thank you for this film.I've been looking for a long time. This movie made my childhood happy.
Terrific movie! No sympathy for bullies, of any sex, racial or religious background, at all!!!
“If I catch anyone bullying...” “You’ll give them a good hiding and enjoy it.” LOL.
This is a great film. Love it.
If you DONT have standards, what have you.? What are you. We can be better than we are..! 🇬🇧
Billy Halop, supremely natural and gifted actor ... so obviously underrated.
"Remind me to Birch you afterwards"...lol.
Ernest Cossart (Squire Brown) was brother of the composer Gustav Holst. His real name was Emil Holst (originally Emil Gottfried von Holst).
That's fucking crazy
Nowhere as good as the
John Howard Davis version
Well, that was painful in more ways than one.
Must of watched this about 30 times, never get's old unlike us. 💀👀
Bring Back the Birch! 😝
don't fook with farmer Jenkins duck pound.....🤐
Here to see Billy Halop💙
Utterly drawn to this by its title. thank you., I allways await those few words "And Directed: it then it begins !
Great movie
One of Flashman's cronies is Hughie Green. He presented talent show Opportunity Knocks. He did the dirty on Jesse Yates. He had an affair with Jesse Yates wife which resulted in Paula Yates.
21:00 - "Is this the new fellow? Nice looking isn't he."
All of these boys became famous actors
A different but equally as good version than John Howard-Davies' film. More accurate to the book and well acted.
In my opinion, much better. I really dislike the 1951 version.
I’m off to sally halliwells to get some Murphy’s 😅
Are they light flickering on the camera
Flash is the man for me, One only needs to read the Flashman papers to see how he worked his way around the Empire giving the locals a good deal of ginger
George Mcdonald Frazer and his version of old Flashy is far better than that terribly good but boring Tom Brown 😂
@@andrewmstancombe1401I agree the Flashman novels are great fun but doesn’t it make you think? Britain was Great when Arnold influenced the Kingdom. Macdonald seeks to amuse but maybe his influence is more malign..😢
opinion: nasal snuff really IS a "capitol habit"
Damn!! Billy Halop was HOT!!!
That's why little sods were whipped.
Out of the four screen adaptations of this novel, this is the ONLY one which addresses the fact that the story is supposed to last six years.
None of them are perfect, but the big fault with this one is the silly feud between Tom and East. That was totally made up for this film, as was Tom being shunned for being a tell-tale.
I just watched Little Lord Fauntleroy on another channel, and saw this suggested, and decided to watch it too because Freddie Bartholomew is in it.
I also just watched a version of Tom Brown's School Days made in 1916. It was a silent film, on the channel - BFI. In that one Tom was there for ten years. It seemed to focus on Tom's fights, and the Dr. Arnold's daughter's crush on Tom, and the reunion at the end between Tom, his sister and their Father, and his sister's son Arthur who was Tom's new boy at school.
I'm Harvey Grossmann, stage director. I missed it in 1940. I was 6. Saw it when I was 10.
Love it ever since!
I'm glad you made this comment. It didn't ring true that East would believe that Tom would tell tales. Then Tom lie about it? No way! 🤨
As soon as they took God out of our schools , that aloud evil in , it got worse and worse everyday , what a wonderful old classic ! Thank you so much for sharing
Love
ONLY TEACHERS I LIKE ARE IN BOTTLES!!
Sadly I could barely hear it 😢
A superb film, the values of life taught then, still apply today, unfortunately the ethos of "integrity" is being diluted today for gain and profit. I hope some of our young people will try to remember that a successful life, is not measured by wealth, but by your contribution to mankind.
I looked up Hughie Greene, who supposedly played the older boy, but it came up with someone completely different. Does anyone k ow who actually played Walker?
Certainly looked like him.
@@andrewhoward7200 Hmm. A watched a few of the other movies that it said he was in, and either he looked way different in the other films or it was someone else. The one in my search results and those other films looked like another one of the boys in this movie.
It is Hughie Green.
고전찬미 감사합니다
Peut on le traduire en français ?
I bet flashman is Boris johnsons hero
A little sniff of "substance." What was the substance?
So sad that Yeast turned on Brown
💙
⭐️⭐️⭐️💜⭐️⭐️⭐️💚⭐️⭐️⭐️
I'd seen this Flashman in too many other US movies and it rather spoilt it for me,
Did they depict the paedophilia?
What do you mean? between older boys and younger boys at a boarding school or with teachers?
Crikey!
Snuff, I would imagine, like tobacco.
25:25 ha-ha)
Pinch of substance capital habit he just sniff cocaine lol
Watched this last night. Brilliant movie.
EDIT: I wrote a review for it on my blog (t.co/kHaue8KYZq ) and on my Letterboxd (t.co/qslMuIaJYR ) if anyone's interested. Spoiler: 5/5 stars
