I had soooo much anxiety hearing about this!! I read somewhere that if you are alone and someone is trying to break in yell for a man. “Will someone’s at the door!” So they know you’re not alone. Protect yourselves, ladies!

As someone who is a landlord, this situation is worse than bad. Most state laws are on the side of the tenant so for goodness sake, use legal services to pursue this landlord. There are too many like him out there. My daughter is moving out early at her expense from a horrible living situation in New England. She will contact the authorities once she’s fully out in a day or so. While I appreciate you sharing this with your viewers, It belongs in the hands of the proper authorities so this person cannot continue being a slum lord.

Abbey you need a lawyer!!!! Omg this is a mess. Contact a lawyer asap to be compensated for your moving fees. Your landlord should be held accountable.
Edited to add: the moving expenses would just be a minimum! You can hold him accountable for reimbursement of back rent as well as the missing packages. I don’t know if you realize how much power you have here! You have texts and documentation. You moved in under the agreement that the door and appliances would be replaced. If that was not done, and if the landlord failed to provide you with a safe, secure living environment, then he is liable for all of these expenses! Please stand up to him, you have young girls watching this channel. Don’t let this go and let these girls think any of this is okay. Set the example and show them what a strong independent woman really looks like! ❤️

Hopefully your safety will never be an issue again but I would look into getting a Master lock door security bar. It’s under $30 and prevents anyone from getting in who is outside the door even if they can unlock the door from the outside. I have one and it’s great for having a little extra security!

Hey girl, I’m a recent subscriber. :) I’ve lived in Chicago for the past 10 years in multiple neighborhoods. I’ve have great apartments…and situations like yours. If you see this, send me a DM. My current landlords are amazing and most of the people who live in my building are single women in our 20s-30s (like myself), so we look out for each other (and each other’s packages)!
As someone who has been in a situation similar to yours before (I even suspect we might’ve had the same landlord…), it’s absolutely awful to feel like your own home isn’t a safe sanctuary.

For mail service I have a mailbox at a UPS store. I use this as my mailing address. There is always someone there to sign for packages, they hold them as long as you need. This is not expensive compared to losing mail or packages. You can travel with peace of mind. I’ve been using a mailbox service for years and wouldn’t go back. I lost a lot back in the day when I had packages left at my door.

Hun, your landlord doesn't care. A door is your first line of home security and he's done nothing. Your fridge is an easy replacement but he couldn't care less, and so on. You don't need to give him the 30 days because he's not even providing you with a secure front door. You can move now. Right now. I'm also going to assume that his promise of the deposit back is just lip service because you really (to be safe) need legal agreements like that recorded as evidence. He's unfortunately demonstrated to you on multiple occasions that he not only doesn't care about the livability of the unit but that he's capable of lying and putting your safety at risk. You deserve better from your housing situation. You deserve a secure front door. 💛

This apartment complex sounds like an actual nightmare. I’m not an attorney but I would think that there are certain housing laws that protect tenants that may apply to at least some of these incidents, especially the door. My brother in law is a housing attorney and he literally represents tenants in these types of situations. You should write a letter to the managing company and see if you can get some of your rent money back. If they failed to provide you with a secure and safe place to live and you also incurred financial loss as a result of their negligence and incompetence, I would have to believe that you are protected in some way.

Abbey, I have lived in Chicago my entire life and work with the criminal justice system. My family and I recently moved to the suburbs due to Chicago’s crime. First and foremost if anyone is ever at your door and you feel unsafe call 911 immediately. Also, start screaming to bring attention to your situation with neighbors. Most criminals that burglarize do not want to enter an apartment or home with someone in it because that is considered a home invasion which carries a stiffer penalty if caught. Get to know your CAPS officers at your local police station. They can be enormously helpful. Attend your police beat meetings, they every other month on Zoom. Residents come together to discuss community concerns and crime and subscribe to your Alderman’s website where you will get notifications about neighborhood happenings and town hall meetings.
Contact the City of Chicago regarding the Landlord and Tenant Ordinance. Landlords have obligations affecting habitability and you may be able to recoup some of you costs. I could go on and on and would be happy to help further. Lastly, no matter where you move get yourself a Master Lock Door Lock Stopper Security Bar on Amazon. They are around $25 and prevent forced entry while you are home. Best of luck in your new place.

Girl I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with that! I lived alone in a high rise in Chicago with bad property managers before moving to my current apartment in Chi, and a lot of the same stuff happened to me. I’ve had building workers walk into my apartment with a master key without any communication about it beforehand or knocking, it was filthy when I moved in, my AC broke multiple times in 100 degree weather and they would make me wait forever to fix it each time it happened so I’d have to go stay with family... the list goes on (probably blocking some worse ones out of my brain because, you know, trauma). I’m glad you’re safe but oh my god that’s terrifying. I’m glad you’re planning to move because everything about that place sounds awful. I highly, highly recommend that when you move or even before that you get a ring camera. That can help discourage a break in plus it give you proof of deliveries/packages being stolen, things like that. I’d also really recommend having some pepper spray that you can use if someone were to break it. Trying to hit someone or use a knife when you aren’t experienced with it makes it really likely they’ll be able to get it away from you and use it against you. Pepper spray doesn’t require you getting that close to them either and gives you a chance to run away after you use it. Also obviously nobody is in their right mind in a situation like that, especially when you’re woken up in the middle of the night but if something like that were ever to happen again, call 911 immediately. Don’t wait to be sure or for things to get worse just call right away. Time is not on your side in a situation like that and if they hear you calling through the door, that could be enough to get them to run away.
Also the fact that guy tried to pretend he was an attorney is beyond a joke. He hasn’t handled anything about this situation the way an attorney would have (coming from the daughter of an attorney).
Again, I’m glad you’re okay and you’re moving to a safer place because jfc this is terrifying. Stay safe abbey and take care ♥️

Still, if I were to move somewhere to start fresh, Chicago would NOT be my first choice . Hope you are okay.

This is so scary and terrifying. I live alone as well and thought how would I protect myself if someone broke in. At 5’1 I don’t think my 10 pound weights made me strong enough 💪. Years ago I saw an episode on Oprah who had a self defense professional and they recommended women have wasp spray in their house. With wasp spray you can stand about 20 feet away and is a stream of spray vs a mist so you don’t need to get close to the person. When sprayed in the face it would give you enough time to at least run. I keep a can by my bedside and in my kitchen. I hope this helps. I am going to look into the master lock bar the other person suggested.

Omigosh, how frightening! I don't know about Illinois but some states hold landlords negligent for things like that. Even though you're moving, I would suggest you check into getting a taser and/or pepper spray which are both legal in Illinois. You should not be defenseless. I would also advise that in any situation where you feel threatened you should immediately call 911, tell them you are alone and someone is breaking in. It doesn't matter if the intruder leaves before the police get there. Your safety is paramount. I'm sorry you've had to experience all of that. Chicago hasn't 'let' crime run rampant.
Like many large cities Chicago is struggling. I am sorry this has happened, being a single woman has it's own issues.
The building doesn't seem to have much security. Bldg management being negligent sure doesn't help.
Always add additional security with locks and safety measures.
      Regarding packages being stolen.
That happens everywhere especially in the suburbs! Amazon has package lockers in lobbies and stores that are safe & secure. There are many alternative drop off package locations.
Naturally you should have the expectation of receiving your orders and not worry about actually getting them!
One danger of having such a public platform is having the wrong kind of folks interested in you...where you live.
You film in your home, people will turn sleuth and try to 'visit'.
Moving seems the only option, it is a shame and an added expense you shouldn't have had to deal with.
Your building mgmt really let you down.

Package stealing has been a HUGE problem in my area of Chicago… I won’t say the neighborhood online. One of the thieves was likely a neighbor who liked the stuff I order but it’s also a thing for people to tail delivery trucks here and go in buildings and courtyards right after to steal and/or open packages and mail. Year round, not just holidays. What helped was filing a police report each time (you can do so retroactively, give as much info as you can like delivery date and the delivery company/service) and informing the building and neighbors that I have done so and will continue to do so as for any future problems. I made sure to bring this up with all my neighbors (“hey, if you see something let me know so I can add it to the police report!”) Well, guess who hasn’t had any packages stolen in months 😑 people think they can get away with so much.

Abbey, I suggest looking at newer development apartment buildings in Chicago. A while back, I moved to Chicago for work and ended up renting in a “trendy” apartment building. The building was owned by a management company and it hadn’t been well-maintained. So many things were wrong with the apartment and the management company was non-responsive. Luckily, that lease was only for ten months, after that, I moved into a new building by Millennium Park. It was much more expensive but definitely worth it! The location was better and the building had great amenities.

With the level of documentation you have proving that negligence, there's absolutely an opportunity to obtain a lawyer and it not be a waste of time or money.

This landlord deadass should be sued and you could definitely make a case against him for lost property/safety (depending on the terms of the lease, which I haven’t read through). But I assume repairs under a large building have a maintenance staff, and if you had receipts of the package agreement NOT being left at the door while away, y’all could make a good case. I just feel like something needs to be done for the other tenants who might be feeling the same but stuck in their lease

I am so sorry this happened to you!I I have had somewhat similar things happen in the apartment I was living in (I think the lockdowns probably made things worse in my case). After 2 years of "strange" things happening and trying to rationalize it, I finally gave my notice and moved. It takes me a long time to learn apparentallty. Anyway, I really hope you can find a good place to live really soon!

I think the pounding on your door was a very good thing - to prompt you to get the heck out. No more waffling about whether you should go or not. Yes, go. That was a gift. Take it and run. Moving is not fun, it never is. Stay safe - that's the most important thing.

I'm glad you're okay. It seems a bit odd to me that you tell your landlord that you are moving then someone tries to break in. It also seems like the door isn't secure at all but they couldn't break in. I don't want to insinuate anything but maybe someone was trying to scare you...maybe someone that is upset that you're moving out or something? Probably not but it is a possibility.

What neighborhood did you live in?? I live in Chicago and I absolutely love it! I was born and raised here and yes while it does have crime I think it is just an amazing city. That’s so terrible that someone tried to break in!! I would be so terrified! I live in Wrigleyville, I love it and my landlord is great. It really really sucks but you just have to keep looking. Definitely try to look up reviews and talk to people at the apartments and see what they think!!

Could you maybe do a video about how to stop all breakage that could be happening and how/where to start with fixing breakage and what would be a good affordable shampoo to use for good healthy strong hair. ( I’m thinking the kind I use might not be good. Tressemme. ) I seem to be getting a lot during the night ( especially right in the front ) even though I put it in a low loose braid. I have so much breakage and I don’t know what to do.

have been there in my 2 bedroom in Chicago … It’s like people know a girl lives alone & they harass you … I have stories as well & I just moved out when they egged my door 🚪 & threw pancake 🥞 batter on it one random day I had guests over ? Huh 🤔! They didn’t care …2 weeks later I heard them or someone trying to break in & I was alone … And I had no weapons nothing …now I got my conceal carry, my foid card & im armed ready to protect myself… I go to the shooting range I learned there how to use guns & that is that… as women who live alone we are vulnerable don’t take chances girly. Best !

Hi Abbey, The Ignorance of your Landlord is very uncalled for. The safety of his tenants should be high priority. I hope the next property that you move to is more safe and secure to live a life that you wanted to. I pray that everything will work out for you.

As if the condition on move in wasn't bad enough. . . I was out at the shower situation. The front door, the nails show that the LL was well aware of the situation and attempted to conceal it. No, that shipment delivery process won't do. New leaf. So happy you got out of your lease.

You should report the landlord to an apartment agency of some sort, I'm not sure if one exists in Chicago but I would recommend researching just in the case that landlord tries anything after you move out (charges etc.)

I spent several years in apartment community management and this is horrible customer service from the staff working in the leasing office. Yes, there are not a lot of things that the actual management company can do about crime at the time it is happening, which is why they would advise you to call the police, but this was after the fact. They could have taken steps to make you feel more secure like repairing the door and checking any camera footage they may have, if they have cameras, and just generally being nice and comforting. Good customer service should be expected from your management company. And trust me, I've seen the other side where we've had residents physically throw things at our staff and we were still polite. I'm glad you are getting out. You should report this to the local housing authority because this is not the way a management company should be treating you.

This is all ridiculous. Your next apartment should have CC cams throughout the building, including entries/ exits and at each floor, if it’s multi level, that can see both ends of the hall. No excuse for this.
And definitely in the parking lot as well. This makes me so angry! I’m glad that you’re safe, Abbey 💕

Omg what a nightmare, everything is 🤯🤯🤯. Missing mail and packages can happen even at a house or place of business, maybe getting a PO Box is better option (inconvenient, but I’d rather that then the stress of thieves).
Hopefully this will never happen again, but if someone is trying to break in, they r probably high on adrenaline if u yell “I’m going to hurt you, the police on their way”. This should scare them off, regardless if they know ur alone because of the adrenaline.
