  • Ankylosing Spondylitis is a rare genetic autoimmune spine disease that causes progressive pain without a cure. For some reason Black patients in the US tend to have more severe symptoms that other patients. In this video, I talk about the research that points how one specific genetic test is often used to exclude Black patients even though they have the disease.

Research Studies I mention in this video:

The most commonly used criteria for the classification of ankylosing spondylitis were developed in 1966 and modified in 1984. They are:
-Low back pain of at least three months duration with inflammatory characteristics (improved by exercise, not relieved by rest)
-Limitation of lumbar spine motion in sagittal and frontal planes
-Decreased chest expansion (relative to normal values for age and sex)
-Bilateral sacroiliitis grade 2 or higher
-Unilateral sacroiliitis grade 3 or higher.

Love these videos, I am applying for medical school & was wondering if you could cover your application & personal statement as I am in a similar situation as you looking for LGBTQIA+ friendly schools and writing a personal statement that reflects who I am!
