Since the launch of this channel, we have looked at a number of mysterious disappearances in and around the national parks of North America, which were identified through the work of David Paulides. Over the next two episodes, we will be examining a cross-section of his research which, receives perhaps the least publicity and analysis, those of the near missing 411.

I work in a small state park in Ohio, spanning 698 acres. One day, an eerie incident occurred while I was cleaning up litter along a trail near Abatement Area B, a man-made pond designed to compensate for drained wetlands due to the marina's construction. I left the idling gator I was using nearby since it was old and unreliable. About 200 feet away, it suddenly fell completely silent. Initially, I assumed it had run out of gas or stalled, and I might need to walk back for maintenance. However, I soon realized it wasn't just the gator; the entire forest had gone eerily quiet - no birds, traffic noise, or wind, just an unprecedented silence.A growing sense of unease washed over me as I felt an unseen presence lurking amidst a stand of dead trees, and it clearly didn't have my best interests at heart. It was akin to a bored cat observing a mouse, showing no immediate intention to pounce but definitely watching. Every instinct screamed for me to run back to the gator, yet a gut feeling warned that something terrible might occur if I did. So, I cautiously and purposefully made my way back to the gator.Approximately 50 feet from the gator, the sound of its idling engine, along with all the other usual sounds of nature, suddenly returned, as though someone had flipped a switch. When I shared this experience with a Native American friend who knew that part of the park well, they confirmed that it had always given them the creeps, and they never ventured there. They also cautioned that if I had run, it might have been the last thing I ever did.
hehe, the freakiest case of the silence I ever felt? It wasn't in the woods. It was an office building with an enclosed central courtyard. this courtyard had a park-like area with grass, trees, and places to sit, and so on... hearing THAT go silent... weird as heck. but it happened. Part of what made it weird, is that it was only a moment's shock where I thought it was truly silent. I quickly realized that.. I could hear things outside the courtyard. It's just that all the birds and stuff had decided to be quiet all at once. It was very gradual at going back to normal too. It's like some of the birds weren't sure they should stay quiet, but were freaked out by how the others were sitting still. My conclusion was that I'd startled the birds, and instead of flying away, they tried to hide from me.
Wow
Glad you made it. Same thing happened to me at in a large mall parking lot. Half way to the car I noticed all noise had just stopped. Couldn't even hear the cars on the nearby highway. I quickly got to my car and left. Never had that happen before or scenes.
It’s called eerie silence phenomena. We do not know what has possibly came to this world from another Dimension. Seems that it is predatory in nature. Yeah I wouldn’t advise to run, just stand your ground.
The owls are not what they seem...
I experienced “the silence” the first time I went camping. Craziest part of it was that it was a public camping area, with plenty other campers within yards of us. We had packed everything away for the night, my buddy and I were sharing a tent, and my other two friends who were a couple were in their tent with their three dogs. After some small talk, my buddy was fast asleep, and so were my other two friends. I couldn’t sleep, I felt tired but was restless and I was attributing this to being in a totally different environment. I suddenly began to notice how still, heavy, and silent the night seemed to have become. I should have been hearing the sounds of the wind ruffling through the trees, the sound of my friend’s dogs moving about in their tent, the sounds of small animals like insects and other small critters, but nothing. I felt as if my tent had morphed into a windowless, doorless, sound proof room. I had the urge to peek outside through the tent’s zipper, but something deep in me told me not to. I don’t know how long this lasted, I did my best to not think about it and was finally able to get some sleep.
During breakfast the next morning, my friend brought up how scared she was because she heard noises outside. She heard what she described as “howling and whooping” nearby and her dogs were getting all worked up about it. She said she was so scared by whatever it was, that she grabbed all three of her dogs and held them up against herself in an attempt to keep them quiet. She asked me “did you guys not hear all the commotion last night?” I said no, and asked her about what time she had heard it. Apparently this all had happened at around 11 at night, I was up at that time, it was during “the silence”. I tried to dismiss what she heard by telling her it might’ve been coyotes out hunting. I heard absolutely nothing though, and neither did my friend.
The next night, the same thing happened, but this time I literally heard as “the silence” went away, and it was then replaced by a low humming sound. This time my friend experienced it with me, and was beyond creeped out. We just payed there speechless until the sound vanished, and the sounds of the woods and night returned. A couple years later I came across David Paulides work, and was disturbed at the similarities of my experience to what other people claim to have experienced in national parks.
This happened to me in Flagstaff Arizona
Flagstaff! Wow
Freaking Arizona, man! I live In Mesa right now. I experienced The Silence near the Salt River, within 10 miles of Apache Junction on the Bush Highway.
If you really want to experience some weird stuff...just camp anywhere near the Salt River, or the Superstition mountains.
I haven't met a single person here that hasn't experienced SOMETHING weird, messed up, or just plain WTF inducing.
@@BrockLee3 welcome to Strangeland lol
I live in Prescott and this happening in Arizona where weirdness in nature, missing people, ufo's etc are abundant I'm really not surprised. My boss saw a cigar shaped ufo last week about 4 in the morning flying by his house. Where abouts in Flag did this happen?
@@lgarla23 We were staying in a campsite called Pine Grove, near Mormon lake.
I was a misfit, loner kid. In the late 1970's I started taking long walks in Dog Town, a woodland that was the first settlement of Europeans here in the 1600's. Long abandoned, you could still follow old paths and find the stone lined cellar holes of the original homes. The glacial stones were used to build foundations and walls were all that remained after centuries. I had a cat, a tom, and he was a "barn" or outdoor cat. We were close and he would usually go with me on these walks of an hour or two.
On one such trip I went further than I had before and we discovered several cellar holes clustered together and a wider bit of track. The ruins of a farm or village perhaps. As I moved in to investigate I heard my cat meow, a long low creepy almost howl. he was frozen and staring at a van sized boulder ahead of us. I called to him to come forward but he refused to move. Then it hit me: the eerie feeling of being watched, and being in danger. I stopped and stared at the boulder, a few more steps were taken but the feeling grew stronger- I was sure there was something behind it. The cat let go another low meow and did something I'd never never seen a cat do before- he started walking backwards with his face kept focused on that boulder.
I called him, he kept backing up, two more steps and he started to turn around. As he did he looked me right in the eye and I knew he was begging me to follow him. Then he started back the way we had come, first slowly then picking up speed.
I looked towards that boulder again and then back at my cat leaving. I followed the cat. The sense of dread receded.
After that I kept walking but the cat would always turn back for home after only a few minutes into the woods. I went on alone one day and I found that spot again, I had a club and a big knife and I was determined to have a good look around. But it wasn't the same, no sense of dread and nothing there but ruins and stones.
If you have an animal with you on a walk in the woods, and they suddenly get scared. That is a time for you to get scared and get the h out of there. Thank you for sharing your experience.
A genuinely interesting story. I believe it. Similar weird experiences myself as a child/adolescent at my grandparents' house (which was surrounded by forest) in rural Ontario, Simcoe County, though not involving a cat/animal which would have helped confirm that the gut feelings weren't just childish delusions.
Excellent story 👍🏼
This reminds me of an account related to me by a close friend. The event didn't happen to him, but to his good friend. Someone he has grown up with since childhood. A no nonsense type of guy that doesn't make up stories. His friend would always go hunting, in the same area, every year near Ruidoso, New Mexico. He told my friend he knew that area like the back of his hand, that is, until he didn't. He described walking in a familiar area, and then all of a sudden nothing looked familiar. He said the normal landmarks he used were not there and everything felt very different. Then, he looks off in distance, and sees a group of native Americans walking in a single line. He told my friend they were wearing attire that you would see them wearing in pictures of the late 19th century. He said he froze and watched them walking for some time. It's like they just showed up out of thin area. Then, he said all of a sudden, the surrounding area looked familiar again, the group of native Americans had disappeared, and he could identify the usual landmarks he was used to seeing. To this day, my friend told me, his childhood friend, still recounts this strange event.
Timeslip! 🙂
That is very interesting. Scary but amazing at the same time.
Sounds like he was experiencing a trapped memory attached to the site or else he saw the spirits of those who once called the area home (which wouldn’t explain the different landmarks). I read that sometimes people have reported smelling sulfur in Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as hearing some Latin. If the area experienced a great tragedy then he might have accidentally trigged a memory that clung to the land. That’s my theory at least. It could be possible it was a time slip but my money is one of the other two options
Could the explanation be a parallel world?
Several famous physicists believe in parallel worlds created by a different collapse of the wave function.
Maybe your friend experienced a parallel world where America wasn’t discovered by the white Europeans.

Nonsense
I've experienced "The Silence" once before (the paranormal kind). I've stepped out into the middle of the night to go scorpion hunting, or tarantula hunting, or snake hunting HUNDREDS of times here in Arizona. I've seen things, heards things and felt things which caused me to never go back to those spots again. The Silence was one of the worst things I've ever experienced. The things I see/hear/feel will rarely be something which scares me so badly that I have to leave...The Silence was one of those things:
I was out looking for scorpions on a trail about half a mile South of the Salt River. I was about 50 - 100 feet away from the gate which leads you into the trail. I was just walking when all of a sudden...DEAD SILENCE. The loud-buzzing noises of the cicadas just went dead, and I couldn't hear ANYTHING. And, what was described in the video was exactly what I felt: the air/atmosphere getting heavy; the feeling that "something" was watching me; the feeling of everything around me being fake; but, I also felt some sort of static electricity all over my body (I'm a very hairy guy, and I REALLY felt it). The moment all of the sounds went dead is when I started looking around with both of my flashlights. I already had my black-light flashlight on to see the scorpions; and, I turned on my regular bright-white light to see if there was some sort of predator around me. I looked left, right and even turned around a few times; but, didn't notice anything. It felt like something was definitely watching me, though. Then, I looked at the full Moon and thought, "Why does the Moon look so weird?" I couldn't put my finger on exactly WHY the Moon looked weird, but it almost looked like it was 2-Dimensional...as if it was just a flat-light which someone hung up in a dark room. And, when I looked at the shrubs and bushes being illuminated by the light of the Moon, they looked strange...as if they were fake, as well. But, what was really strange was how the shadows of everything out there were pointing in different directions.
I decided that I should step back and get to my car because something was TERRIBLY wrong. And, all it took was three steps backwards to cause all of the noises to return. I looked up at the Moon, and it looked normal, now. The shrubs and bushes just looked like shrubs and bushes. Even the shadows of everything were pointing in my general direction (to the West). So, I thought, "Hmm...maybe I should just go home now." So, I walked the short distance back to my car, and drove back home. The next day, my herping buddies called me to see if I had any luck out there, and I told them what happened and where it happened. They knew the spot, because we had gone there a few dozen times over the years. But, when they went that night...they experienced NOTHING.
There were other times when I experienced a silence...but, it was nothing like "THE Silence." Sometimes you will walk into an area and everything goes silent...except for the sound of the wind, water and other sounds made by nature. I've experienced that quite a few times, and I do believe it was simply my/our presence which caused the animals to shut-up. But, The Silence I heard (or didn't hear) that one night was something TOTALLY different. The way the Moon looked, and how the shadows were pointing in a 180 degree array from the Moon was what terrified me the most about it. It was almost like the Moon was only about 200 feet ahead of me (it explains why the shadows were pointing in different directions). I don't know how to explain it...but, I know for a fact that wasn't the Moon I was looking at, at that moment.
Good comment.
@@lecrovidae6987 Thank you.
If you're ever in Arizona...and, actually want to experience some weird s*%t...just camp out by the Salt River, or anywhere near the Superstition Mountains. I've been "hunting" those grounds for decades, and there's definitely something wrong with those places.
Sounds like you were breaking the Simulation, or at least we're momentarily out of sync with it.
@@jeggsonvohees2201 I like that hypothesis.
The other hypothesis I heard was: I walked into a trap; I just didn't walk far enough into it for me to set it off and be taken. That's one of the ways people go missing...they are taken by some extra-dimensional or extra-terrestrial beings. They are usually taken when they're alone. Which explains why my herping buddies didn't experience anything...because, there were three of them at one time, which would have left witnesses to the disappearance.
But, I don't know how credible the whole "trap hypothesis" is...it came from a psychic that didn't know whom parked in her parking spot.
@@BrockLee3 Does sound a bit sus, doesn't it?
Love the addition of the Predator clicking during the third story. Nice little easter egg
I was looking for this comment! I heard the sound and just went "wait, was that...? Did they just...reference the Predator?" I genuinely wasn't sure!🤣

Greetings from Finland.
I also have experienced the Silence a few times and my experience is extremely similar to what the visitors to American national parks experienced. In each case I experienced the Silence, I remembered my moms advice telling me that if I ever feel like something is watching me while I'm in a forest, never look behind and never run, no matter how much I want to. The odd thing is that my mom never mentioned the Silence or anything like it when she told me that advice and yet that was the thing that was first in my mind when the Silence happened.
And I guess this also means that the Silence is not limited to the north America.
Oh, man! When I experienced The Silence (in Arizona), the first thing I did was look around and behind me (your Mom would NOT have approved). I was walking onto a trail in the desert, near the Salt River; when EVERYTHING just went mute. The only reason why I looked around was because it felt like I was being watched by "something." I was just making sure no Mountain Lions had snuck up on me. After I looked around, I started to notice how everything looked "fake." But, the thing which scared me the most was how the full-Moon, itself, also looked "fake." Then, I noticed how the shrubs around me looked "fake;" and, how all of their shadows were pointing in different directions. The air was very heavy, and it felt like static-electricity was was flowing all over me. I knew I should get out of there and go home...so, I took three steps back, and all of a sudden ALL of the noises of the night came back. I made the very short trek to my car, and went home after that.
I don't think it's a problem to look around you. It'll help you identify where the uneasy feeling of being watched is coming from. You need that to know in case it's a Predator. Just don't run. If it is a Predator, especially a big cat, running triggers their killer instincts, like ringing a dinner bell. I haate that feeling of being watched by something menacing. I used to live in a place in Indiana. It happened almost every time I took out the garbage at night.
@@BrockLee3 all the shadows pointing in different directions is extra creepy, & not something I've ever heard someone mention noticing before. Interesting! (Probably not interesting enough to stick around & find out more though, lol.)
@@morgainnejade Yeah...those shadows are what scared me the 2nd most. The fake-looking full-Moon is what had my attention the most. Then, I noticed the fake-looking shrubbery, and THAT'S when I noticed the shadows were pointing in 180 degree array with the Moon at the center of it all (impossible).
The moment I experienced The Silence until the moment I took those three steps backward was about 15 seconds. I just knew something was VERY f-ed up right there and didn't feel like spending time examining the situation. I "noped" out of there quite quickly. I'm pretty sure you (or anyone with a brain) would have done the same.
@@BrockLee3 can you elaborate more on what made the scenery look fake? I'd love to hear more
Early this year I was on a trail on a mountain ridge straddling the Virginia/West Virginia border with my girlfriend and a friend. Maybe 15 minutes or so into the hike my friend pointed out how everything had gone silent, and it really was oppressive and just felt wrong. We could even feel wind on our skin but there were no sounds except for our footsteps. Right before we got to the overlook (we did a segment of only around a mile maybe) it was like a switch was flipped, there was a small group of people there that we heard talking immediately, and the birds started chirping again. Nothing happened to us, but it was super eerie
i never thought 'the silence' was so common. i experienced it myself a few weeks ago in a forest near where i live in England. i had just finished taking photos in a bird hide that overlooked a massive lake, and had decided to head back as some other people came into the hide, scaring off the birds. the forest had been very busy, as it is a popular walking spot and it was very warm. but as i started walking back, i noticed that everything had gone silent. i couldn't even hear the running water of the river that ran by the path. no animals, no people. it was the eeriest thing I've ever experienced, i froze on the spot as i felt like something was watching me. after about 5 minutes a person came up the path and everything returned to normal. I thought I was just imagined it, so never told anyone.
Can I ask where this was exactly?
I live in England. Where did this happen to you ?.
I live in England, which forest was this?
@@vikki8699 could it have bee4n Keilder ?
Why do people feel the need to say they live in England too as if the whole country is a single forest we all walk in daily 😂
A friend of mine and I used to go 4 wheeling in the Withlacoochie state forest in west
central Florida. One cool rainey day in December we were in the Citrus tract area near Holder Mine. Sunset was approaching and we drove up behind a couple in a Jeep. They were stopped on the trail just sitting there. I tapped the horn a few times and they didn't move, look back or even flinch. We walked up to them saying a few things until I got close enough to the driver and already had his and his girlfriends attention. But they just stared and pointed up the trail. We saw a deer at a dead stop and she 'A Doe.' was staring towards the East and her back half of her legs were Not there. But she was standing as if she had her bottom half of her legs were there! We looked at each other in disbelief. She was only ten or so yards from us and there was nothing obstructing our view. After about 5 minutes she started walking and the rest of her legs came into view. Then she leaped into the thicket and disappeared. We didn't notice how quiet it was until all the sounds came back at once. We all looked at each other and turned 180 and got out of the woods completely. No we drink beer sometimes but no drugs. I know what I saw that day about 25 years ago.
Edit: My bad. I said East instead of West.
@@undefinedvariable8085 as he said. About 25 years ago.
Glitch it the game we are in
Hey, I literally just watched a new video by Beyond Creepy, about an episode of alien abduction at Withlacoochie.....bizarre coincidence ...
Having experienced "The Silence" more than a few times while hunting, it is the most eerie and unnerving feeling in the entire world. There's no reason it should be, but when the normally slightly noisy woods is dead quiet, well, I'll just say that those experiences are probably where some of my anxiety comes from
Isn't the explanation for it that small prey animals/birds try to be quiet when they think they're in the presence of a predator?
@@Phantosification if it was just animal noise, yes. but it's also the wind stops entirely, no tree rustling, no water noise, no nothing
kinda like you were transported to another forest, same looking but silent, then your survival insticts kicks in that there's something wrong. scary.
@@Phantosification the wind isn't scared of predators, and leaves don't rustle when things go dead silent. it's akin to being deaf, there is no sound. it's not quiet, it's silent
Perhaps you can try to document this phenomenon? I live nowhere near a national park or I would attempt it myself
I feel like I need to run down the street yelling “BEDTIME STORIES IS COVERING MISSING 411!” I haven’t been this excited since you guys covered Skinwalker Ranch.

Hearing about the “Silence” has helped me understand the one time i experienced a similar experience in the bush but couldn’t understand why I felt full of dread and panic like I have never experienced in my 10 years of navigating that bush ,
I was in the bush picking Blueberries( I would sell 100$-120$ a day I would make doing it)
I was about 5 km away from the little “settlement” I lived in and I was making my way from mountain to mountain that were about a 20 min hike from eachother that I would have to “bushwhack” to get to , and as I made my way into this grassy grove that was like a small valley in the middle of the bush with a big rock face and tall birch trees , but when I made my way to the bottom of the grove I stopped to try and listen for the usual noises I tend to look for but I couldn’t hear ANYTHING from the surrounding foliage and felt almost as I wandered into somewhere I shouldn’t have been I was immediately filled with a TERRIBLE sense of dread and fear and began running as fast as I could out of this “grove” I later tried to rationalize the lackof sound to being in a valley where the wind wasn’t able to hit the trees leaves but thinking back on it the trees stood tall enough that the tops were as high as the trees outside of the “valley grove”
For further context:
I lived in a place called “the radar base” in Hanmer,Ontario (Sudbury) that in itself is a creepy place , it’s a little place consisting of about 50 houses where the military workers operating the Radar base and their families lived in during the “Cold War era”
The radar base sat at the top of hill about 1 km through the bush and was decommissioned for decades by the time I lived there , it was Huge ,old and falling apart and had really unnerving presence
You were very lucky Jaden. According to Paulides a category of people that frequently vanish are berry picking. If you are still doing this, do NOT go alone and ALWAYS stay within eyesight of whoever you're with.
There's stories in you tube about missing berry pickers, you were lucky..
I've also had the weird instantaneous feeling of intense dread working in the Yukon. I similarly hiked down into a bowl on a mountain/hill (they are sort of invetween mountains and hills where I was), and suddenly felt an intense feeling of dread. My body was simultaneously telling me my life was in danger and I had to leave the area asap. I was soil sampling at the time and was supposed to take several samples in that area but I just left as fast as I could. I was looking in every direction for a predator or something but saw nothing out of the ordinary. I've never had that feeling before or since, and I will never forget it. It still fraka me out 10 years later thinking about it. What was it?
The silence happened to me when I was younger. I was fishing with my grandparents and everything but us went silent. It was incredibly eerie. But it got stranger when we noticed the sun was no longer setting in the west. It was now in the east. We all had saw it and we were confused, trying to rationalize the whole thing. At some point, everything reset: sound came back and the sun was back where it belonged. I still want to rationalize it but it's been marked as one of those unexplainable things that happen here in Michigan.
Good to know the silence isn't so rare that I feel crazy. Had a feel experiences with it myself, mostly as a kid. Felt like I was on stage and every bird, bug, and critter was holding their breath. Like the Forest watching me.
Out on the plains though was worse. The wind through the grass and the sounds from the highway have nothing to scatter them, so their absence is heavy. Literally, it's like a pocket of air pressure descends on you and the sky gets closer if that makes any sense. And then the isolation gets to you when all you see is grass and sky and nothing tells your ears which way is which and the sun glares down like it's laughing at you because it won't show you east from west. It's a void. It's panic inducing.
Yea, just like a pocket pressure. Any time it happened to me as a kid I always used to try pop my ears. Never worked of course.
Sure you guys don’t just have mental disorders? I have have one, too. It’s called “Being too smart for this supernatural bullcrap”. So, yeah I got BTSFTSNBC.
I experienced The Silence before...just once; But, I have experienced silences multiple times, and there is no comparison. Every time I experience a silence, the animals, bugs, birds just shut-up...but, the other sounds of water running and wind blowing can still be heard. Those silences were caused simply by my pressense. The one time I experienced THE Silence there were no sounds PERIOD! Also, mine happened during the middle of the night with a full-Moon. The biggest, scariest problem was: the Moon looked "fake." Also, the shrubs and everything there looked "fake" as well. The Moon light was casting shadows in different directions, instead of just one direction. Yes, the air/atmosphere got heavy; it felt like "something" was watching me; and, there was this static-electricity feeling all over my body (I'm a very hairy guy, so I really felt that part of it (LOL!))
But, all it of it ended when I took three steps backwards to get out of "The Silence." It was as if someone hit the un-mute button on a remote with how quickly the sounds came back. But, that Moon...I will never forget that Moon. I know for a FACT that wasn't the Moon...even the light it was giving off felt "fake." The feeling I felt while there was...well...not good (I don't know how to describe it). I would prefer to never feel like that again.

You are either young and have not experienced enough strangeness to know that this world is NOT all there is, or you just don’t pay close enough attention. You do realize we can only view 1% or less of the light spectrum? Something could be right in front of you and maybe you would have no clue.
I want to relate an experience my aunt had very recently. She was hiking down Mt. Salak in Indonesia, she's part of a group that went up to Kawah Ratu and she decided to go down along with 2 teens from the group. Partway through the journey, she became exhausted and told the teens to go on ahead without her. But no sooner had she stopped, the environment around her went quiet. Like, eerily quiet. No wind noise, no birds chirping, total silence. Her instincts told her something was off, so she stood still, waiting for a sound. Any kind of sound. Thankfully, the wind returned along with the laughter of the main group coming from behind her. But for a few seconds she was on the cusp of being another missing 411 case at Mt. Salak. Her story reminded me of this video. And I told her John's story. She was shocked at how close she was to becoming a 411 case but also relieved because she was saved by her instincts.
I had an experience with the silence and something..... more. I was walking down a marked trail in a national park in North Carolina. At one point I noticed that the forest was dead quiet. No animal noises no trees rustling, not a sound. To my absolute horror, I felt the strange sensation of something looking at me as prey. I had returned from Afghanistan less then 6 months before, so it was a feeling still fresh in my mind.
I started walking a few feet then took off in a dead sprint. I did this for about 200 yards until I went around a bend in the trail. I saw a large hollow in the bottom of a tree and jumped off the trail and into it. I pulled out the large knife I brought with me and prepaid to defend myself. About 20 seconds later, something just like a cloaked Predator alien ran by me and up the trail about 50 yards. Where it went after that I have no idea. I sat there for a long time when suddenly the sound of the forest returned to me.
I never told a soul until after I heard Jan's story as I honestly thought I was insane or it was just a dream.
If you are telling the truth, then I'd say you should share the story more often. As far as I can tell, this "silence" phenomena is poorly understood with many people dismissing it outright. If there is some kind of phenomena, we need to know about it. So by all means, share more if you can.
Can you tell us of any features of that cloaked alien ? Was he on 2 legs? Any arms? Face? Tall? How was he moving? Your story seems interesting .
Spooky! sounds like you were very lucky
@@littleredwitch As best as I could tell, it was something bipedal with two arms that chased after me. If the thing had a tail I could not tell. I never saw and clear features, just this distorted outline of something that looked like it was misty or had light retracting around it. I use the Predator as an comparison that most people would understand. I am with Dave though, I don't know if that thing causes the silence. Or if I just had really awful luck and encountered both.
@@daniell1483 I have talked about it since I saw her story in the Missing 411 movie. But most people think I am full of it. I used to love going in the woods by myself for a few days to camp and hike. It's been ten years and I have not done it since that day.
I been hunting and have experienced that silence.. and have seen a blurry image that I mistook for vapor coming up from a cold stream... only to disappear just as fast as it appeared.
After every hair on my body stood up. I made sure there was one in the pipe and made my way out ASAP .. > I always thought it was just my younger imagination getting the best of me.

the "porthole" theory is becoming more and more talked about as more and more people say to have seen a blurry section in front of them all while the woods are dead silent
The description of "The Silence" made me shiver, remembering the time it happened to me on my parents property. You described it PERFECTLY! I've felt that something was watching me plenty of times, but that time was totally different. It was the only time feeling that I was being watched was combined with real, almost overpowering FEAR (even armed with a large bore handgun like I was, I was totally afraid). I honestly hope I never experience that again.
God I live on my parents’ property that is def considered woodland. When I’m outside listening to this stuff I get highly creeped out as I’m overwhelmed with crazy what-if thoughts before I hightail it inside hoping I never get the chance to 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 skinwalkers, wendigos etc are real. I’ve never experienced anything paranormal and I’d very much like to keep it that way. I’ve never even “felt I was being watched.” I’m fine with believing and never ever seeing lol!
Definitely there is more around us that we can see.
Ohh yikes even reading your description makes me shiver. I’ve been to Scotland a few times in a cabin but I’ve never experienced anything paranormal or have that feeling like you’ve had. I’m beginning to feel left out.
@@robinmcinarnay7827 You're lucky. when people say they "felt like they were being watched" it doesn't fully capture what is being experienced. If you've ever actually felt it, it's powerful. It's a very distinct, primal feeling coming up from some ancient place that goes through your entire body and stops in your tracks - like a shift into instinct gear. If you have experienced it, you don't ever forget what it feels like. All these comments with people remembering one moment from 20 years ago? That's the power of this feeling.
@@robinmcinarnay7827 believe me, experiencing paranormal events are some of the most frightening things a person could go through. I've had two shadow people encounters and a Dogman encounter and a S-Walker outside my house just here in May
The story about the park ranger was unnerving. The story about the two kids being lured into the woods was absolutely terrifying.
I see it as the other way, the kids are to blame for their lakc of waryness and that theyre too young to venture in the forrests alone, but almost walking in to a portal and just barely noticing that where he placed his foot half had dissapeared now thats close.
@@baltulielkungsgunarsmiezis9714 I was totally freaked out by the story of the children, for the sake that it seemed the evil fairy was purposely targeting them due to their innocence. So scary.
I've experienced the silence too. I was out fossil hunting in a creek that's right outside a gun range, so all day long you can hear the regular sound of gunfire in the near distance. My mother and I had gotten maybe a quarter mile into the creek when it suddenly became dead silent. No wind, no birds or insects, no sound of water in the creek. The eeriest part though is that the sound of the guns stopped too. You can chalk the lack of animal sounds to up to predators but even hearing that nearby sound of cavillation just wink out was very unnerving. The air felt charged too and there was that overwhelming sense of extreme all-encompassing dread like; you can sense you're about to die but can't discern a reason. There was a sharp bend ahead of a us in the creek and we felt like the cause of the extreme fear was around the bend. We were kind of frozen until I saw a huge spider on a web next to me which caused me to startle, and it was like a spell broke and we all but ran out of the creek. Went back a few days later with more people and it was completely normal. Even thinking back on it after years still gives me goosebumps. I've never experienced fear like that before or since. Had a few other times it got silent when I was out in the woods but nothing like that.
There is a legend that states that if you are walking, but you keep walking by the same stretch of trail, same landmarks, etc., even though the trail is straight and doesn’t loop on itself, to take of your shirt and put it on backwards and inside-out. Then you will keep walking and the trail will progress like it should.
Oh wow! I just returned from a fossil dig in Utah. We found a sauropod.
I experienced The Silence. I was a teenager fishing at a local dam. The small lake was always packed with bluegill and crappie. I was having a fun day of catch and release using canned corn for bait. Dozens of fish hung out around the dock waiting to be caught. No matter the day or time you could always see and catch fish there, and easily. That day I had caught and released nearly a dozen fish in my first hour. Then The Silence came. The air got heavy, it got noticably warming within seconds, the lake lost it's glimmer from the sun shining overhead, not a cloud in the sky, and everything seemed to stop. No noise, no gentle breeze, no fish by the dock. Everything was seemingly put on pause but me.
I had an intense feeling of being watched by something in the hills around me. Completely unnerving. I yelled with no return echo. I dropped a small lead sinker in the water, no splash, no ripples, no lead sinker in at the bottom of the lakes crystal clear and eerily now solid looking water. I stood there looking around to the other fishing spots at various locations across that small lake. No one. I could have sworn there were while I was fishing not 5 minutes earlier. Then it dawned on me that the music that was coming from my car wasn't. My mixtape of pearl jam, rhcp, and other mid 90s jams was no longer audible. I was still, in my mind while processing what was happening, singing along to Give It Away. Then I got heavy, I felt impossibly physically heavy. Gravity had intensified. I wanted to move but couldn't. I was frozen, incapable of moving my legs but still able to rotate my neck and waist. Then an owl, of all the creatures on earth an owl landed on the handrail of the dock and looked me in my eyes. A rush of euphoria and freedom saturated me to my bones as the owl, seemingly telepathically, said, "not yet" and flew off over my head. Only after it passed over me was I able to completely turn around using my legs to track the owl's flight only to discover no owl.
The Silence dissipated, Red Hot Chili Peppers played from the speakers of my 1980 Monte Carlo, the breeze picked up, the lake glimmered, the fish were back, the air cooled. Someone had unpaused reality.
Owls like this are often associated with alien encounters & abductions; more recently I've heard things about aliens actually being demons or demon-like entities. Whether there's truth to that I sure don't know, but for sure there is a great deal that's kept a mystery in our realm & plenty to wonder at.
across the many different tribes of my people owls are very closely connected to the spirit world, even today many elders and others with teachings get a little funny about anything to do with owls
Owls have also been associated with grey aliens, who took on the form to disguise their true identity in a kind of shape shifting.
@NAMELESS INTERNET ADDICT
It was in a documentary movie about alien abductions. The victims kept "dreaming" of large owls but when they were hypnotized it was clear that they had actually seen grey aliens.
i love that you're using canned corn to catch bluegills and crappie...also super eerie. Easily the best comment I've read ever :-)

And the Silence. I never knew it had a name, but I have experienced it before when I was hunter in my younger years. It's eerie and it really does make you feel like you're being watched. My father always told me it was because we are not the only predators in the woods. And that it's best to trust your instincts.
I'm in the UK. in 1998, myself and a friend experienced 'the silence' whilst sitting in a Riverside pub for an afternoon glass of Coke. There were a few other customers in there, and the usual chatter and ambient noise. Suddenly it went silent. Total silence, like being in a vacuum. I felt everything slow down, and when my friend called to me, her voice was in slow motion, as was I when I turned my head round to face her. Everything felt dreamy and hazy, as if time stopped. I then felt time seemingly stop, and then movements returned to normal speed, but everyone in the pub, including staff were gone, except myself and my friend. We got up from our seats and walked around, and I noticed my high heel shoes were't making any noise on the wood floor, just a muffled kind of soft thud. I wasnt scared, strangely, just very puzzled. I looked out the window and watched a sailboat wih a red sail going down the river for what seemed an eternity. I noticed something strange in the middle of the pub floor, there was a 1950's type old bubblegum dispenser machine that hadnt been there before, very incongruously just plonked in the middle of the room. We even went behind the bar to try and find someone. No one in there at all. It had that film set feeling, like it was'nt quite right, and things out of place. Like a recreation of the pub. It was at this point I became aware of feeling watched. Observed. Not like prey, but like we were being observed in an experiment to see how we would react. Calmly, I told my friend to sit back down, then asked her to close here eyes with me, and will ourselves 'back'. She seemed to understand what I meant, and we tried. First time we opened our eyes, and we were still in that strange 'nowhere' pub. Second time, I was really starting to feel panicked and almost angry,.. then as I shut my eyes again, to will myself 'back' to normality, the sound , people and normal time came back to the room. No one else seemed aware that something strange had happened, and chatted normally. We left the pub, but I have no recollection of what happened that day after we left the pub. Memory is hazy. The strangest thing about that incident, is that my friend and I never spoke about it until about ten years later when she brought it up in a phone conversation we were having one night. For some reason I still cant explain, we had felt we should never talk about it, even to each other. There was also another incident in the same place, out side the pub several weeks later, when we had been outside in the evening watching a firework display on the other side of the river. We had felt the same sowing down, and dreamy feeling, and my friend had turned to me and said..'Its happening again',..but this time, as soon as we had become aware that it was happening, it was gone as soon as it came. Ive never experienced anything like it since, but those incidents changed the way I see the world, and I know things are not always secure, or as they seem.

Had that happen once at Cuyahoga Valley National Park on one of the trails that goes in and out of one of the Summit County parks a couple timed. Reached a part of the trail that wound downhill. Suddenly, dead silence. I could feel wind. But all the birds were suddenly quiet and no tree noise in a heavily wooded area with wind. Also seemed to suddenly get a bit darker. Immediately started back to the trailhead

Jan actually forgot about the incident, until her nephew emailed her husband with his account of what he and many others saw while at band practice, at the school. This is strange in itself, but what is more interesting is that the photo taken by her phone, was in a size it could not produce. They had it tested by the phone company, and they had no idea, how the picture was on the phone at a size that could not possibly be made by that particular cell phone. I also think
that the fact that it happened to the wife of an esteemed optical physicist is also interesting.

Now that’s creepy. The fact that there was said to having been a shimmering effect sounds like it must have been some sort of cloaking technology. The silence happens a lot here in Alaska. It's like a dome falls over you that is designed to replicate the environment you are in but is fake if you are a keen observer, because that's when you realize that you are in danger to a curious predator with far more advanced technology but the attitude of a child catching bugs in a glass jar just for fun. Its quite the Lovecraftian cosmic horror experience.
That's an awesome way to describe it.
Annihilation trilogy
I've experienced the "silence" twice in my life--once when I was quite young and the second time just a few years ago after I'd gotten separated from friends while picking blueberries in the Catskills. Both experiences were very uncanny and uncomfortable and in each case, I felt grateful, for reasons that I couldn't understand at the time, that I got back to my friends/home "in time" (that's how it felt). After this second instance, I follow the advice of my M'ikmaq teacher--and don't venture into the woods on my own.
I grew up in a house that is up against a giant forest in Washington State. I have personally experienced the entire forest, animals, and everything go silent before. I'ts so dramatic that you can't miss it, and it's a very eerie feeling.
A friend of mine had a similar experience happen to him. He says when he was 15 he went on holiday with his mum and dad and realised he'd left his spending money back at the hotel whilst they were out in the early evening. He left the bar they were in to walk the short distance to the hotel but he said when he turned the first corner everything went silent and there was nobody about anywhere. It was as though just turning the corner to the next street had somehow caused the town to close up and everyone to disappear. He says it's even weirder because the street he turned onto was actually a busy pub and club scene so it weirded him out to see it all deafly quiet and worse, nowhere was shut, just empty!. Not a single car went past whilst he walked the stretch of street this was happening on and nobody was on the beach. Then he said this weird hovering craft went overhead flying low and slow and then went out of sight. As he turned the next corner the town came back to life again as though nothing had happened. He walked back down the same street on the way back from the hotel once he got his things and it was absolutely heaving with holidaymakers and people having a good time. To this day he swears he entered some weird glitch or alternative reality.
Great episode, as I usual. I think you guys spoil us.
I live in NC, grew up going to the smokey mountain park, and others. My siblings and I ran around those woods, pretty much on our on, with my older sister being the closest thing to an adult around for hours. I have experienced "The Silence" before. The moment I realised the only sound I could hear was the crunching of leaves under my feet I immediately stopped and my hand went to the knife hanging from my belt. After scanning the area and not seeing anything, still hearing nothing but my own breathing, I turned around and slowly walked the direction I had come from until the ambient sounds of the forest returned.
Oh, no, no, no. You haven't experience THE Silence...you simply experienced a silence. I've experienced silences where every animal, insect and bird just shuts-up. Those types of silences are usually caused by YOUR presence or the presence of an apex predator. However, when you experience THE Silence, you don't hear ANYTHING. Even the noises like wind blowing and water flowing are turned mute.
You did the right thing in getting out of there. That silence you experience was PROBABLY caused by your presence...but, you shouldn't think that YOU are the cause of it. It's better to assume something is out there, and it could easily kill you when you experience ANY type of silence.
I think this is a nice companion piece to your previous Missing 411 videos, especially the one where some of Paulides' stories have been called into question.
There's certainly enough eyewitness encounters to suggest something is lurking in the woods and these accounts deserve to be documented.
Looking forward to Part 2!
Grew up huntin. My dad and I would go deep into the marsh and the woods on my land. I was I had been out there for a few hours when I had my first experience with “the silence” the sound of the creeks and the woods went dead silent. I mean I could hear my own heartbeat. It was so eerie, made me feel like I was completely alone and that something dangerous was nearby. Eventually I got a call from my dad and he told me he had been yellin for me so we could start to head back for the past 10 minutes. Never heard him, until I started to walk to the truck we drove to the edge of the woods. Haven’t had an experience with it since but still I’m very very weary when I go out by myself now.
As a child, I lived in a very small town in South Eastern BC in Canada. We moved away from there when I was 8. We went back to visit a few times, as my grandparents lived there at the time. I remember that we hiked up to an old copper smelting site, with abandoned furnaces etc. I remember how deathly silent it was. I was so freaked out that I made my parents leave (tbh, I think it was just my Dad and my sister with me, my mother would never go there after her first visit there). I mean, it wasn't just quiet, as in the middle of a forest quiet. There was no noise at all. No bird song, no birds, and no breeze. No sound of trees. At the time I didn't think it was supernatural. I was only 8. But it was so freakishly quiet that I felt very strongly we needed to leave. Even today, when passing through that little town, I won't stop to visit that place.
Missing 411 stories are my favorite. I travel a lot with work, and I'm usually working alone in state parks or other desolate areas. I really enjoy listening to stories like this, since it hits close to home, being in areas by myself.

I’m in Michigan that silence thing happened to me once. I could hear my cousin about a mile back in my swamp reving up a 4 wheeler. He was big enough to get his self out of the swamp so we didn’t think anything of it. After about 10 minutes of him not letting off the throttle much I went back to check on him. I got on a hill and I could hear him where I thought he would be, but I got over the hill and he was gone and I could hear him driving away down the trail to state land. I walked another 2 miles hearing him kinda close I came into the weirdest pine forest I ever seen and I was surrounded by loud crows. All at once like someone turned off the lights no sound. It’s as described, heavy, being watched. What I have to add is I didn’t go insane but the atmosphere changed. If you’ve done lsd and you felt like you’re looking at cardboard cutout world, kinda like that. Remember on evil dead when ash loses his mind and the house laughed at him and he laughed with it. I started feeling that crazy but it wasn’t me, it was everything else. After 30 seconds of it it did start laughing it was all the crows screaming in synch but with several really high pitched voices leading them and it sounded like a demonic cackle, because it was. I ran that speed you don’t know you can hit until you do, where your feet don’t seem to touch the ground, the entire way home. When I got back I was gone at least an hour longer than I thought and it was getting dark. My cousin was there and he said he was the complete opposite direction than where everyone heard him. My only first hand ghost story. I’m pretty old and I’ve never been crazy people except that moment. The house I live in was built by the Catholic Church 100 years ago. It was used as a retreat by the clergy until the town chased them out because people kept running into naked nuns in the woods. They were rumored to do rituals and suspected witches. Even before I heard them cackle I knew they lured me in. I don’t go to that part of the woods no more.
Great as always. Yeah, I remember Jan Maccabee. From 411 the hunted. What happened to her and the kids over at the high school is very reminiscent of Skinwalker Ranch. And the park ranger nearly walking into a portal… Would explain a lot of these disappearances and disembodied voices. The masked figure trying to lead the children deeper into the woods is pretty terrifying . I’m glad they turned around and went back. Great video. Looking forward to part two.
That might explain some of those missing kids where the kids (who are very little) disappear from like a big outside family party ....they get lured into following "something" that just keeps moving further and further away...
The number of people here who have also experienced “the silence” is mind blowing. I never thought I’d hear anyone else describe it so exactly let alone hundreds of people. 🤯😨

"The Silence" is a physiological stress response. Our brain tunes out distracting noises, so we can hear predators better.
This is what I was thinking as well
So if I can't get to sleep I just need to release a tiger into the room, gotcha.
@@worldcomicsreview354 Not quite. I think you missed the part about focusing on predators.
While I agree that happens, it isn’t the same thing. From my own experience, It’s too sudden and it’s often the cause of your fear, not the response. I didn’t notice it start, I just realized it was so silent, I could hear my breathing.
@@RamBear88 I think they could go hand in hand though. If it is a physiological response, it's just as likely to cause a fearful response as well if you feel you're being a watched by something or something is in the area that does not have your best interest at heart. Which, as someone who has only read about the feeling, makes sense. On land we've just about identified the tells for predatory animals large or small. If this feeling is overcoming people because of some preternatural sense that a predator is in the area and it isn't presenting the normal tells something like a bear or mountain lion would, I'd be scared shitless too.
Being a camper and hiker I have also experienced "The Silence" many times, have experienced it in old homes at times as well.
It’s WEIRD in old abandoned houses, worse than outside I’d say.
My mom tells me about a time she experienced it in a creepy old house her family was looking at back in the 60s. It had a wraparound indoor second floor balcony, but she said when she was up there you couldn't get the attention of anyone on the ground floor. Also had two huge weeping willow trees in front of the house that made everyone nervous for some reason.
@@roarkgoogle I have experienced what I call the "red hours" in the old farm house I lived in as a kid, everything was fine until, around 2-4 in the morning, I would wake up needing to go to the bathroom around that time and I never could wake my parents up during that time, everything would be muffled and there was a red tinge to the light in the house and outside
oh yeah, it's not a phenomenon only in the woods, or only when there's spooky noises outside. It can be very very mundane.
I have that creepy red orange tinge light in my dreams when I'm dreaming about being outside at night
Interestingly enough, something like this happened to me when I was a teen. I use to live in a suburban area near a nature preserve. We had a dog park further down the street from me that was huge and with a path tucked away by some brush on the side, that led to a trail, that stretch out aligning with a babbling Brook into a massively wooded area. It didn't seem like it, but once you started the path....it was easy to see how the properties in front of it were cut off from wooded area and felt extremely seperated from the neighborhood. I loved it!! Lol
It was a nice wooded area that led to a big pond and crossed into another trail; that led to a bridge and even bigger woods. Despite it all being in the heart of the neighborhood.
When I was a teen I was interested in adventure, daydreaming, and etc... I walked my dog through there often. Yet one day I was curious and into magical occultist stuff. I grew up having a lot of psychic and paranormal experiences; so I felt like trying something. This came from within. Like a directive from my spirit. So, I followed my intuition and came one dreary day out onto the path with some milk in a container. I wanted to communicate with the faerie's....like a communion. So, I had a offering. This was on one hand me trying to work with them and another to alleviate their rampant activity at my grandmother's house. I lived with her and would wake up to bizarre happenings, or look outside in our yard and see dozens of perfectly made mushroom circles appear overnight.
Once I found a spot near the brook before it widened into the massive. I stood their and kinda...prayed to them, I guess. It was more of a heart to heart. Less with words and more with intentions. I wanted them to see my sincerity and know I understood this was child's play. That natural/metaphysical laws were upheld above human greed. That I didn't want anything from them, but peace and a smooth relationship. There was this tree stump I used as a alter. It was perfect. Near it were some tall grass and reeds, I think. That I could use to poor the milk into. Almost like a throne. The walk out there had been heavy, because the atmosphere was very late winter, early spring. Trees were naked, the ground was wet and hard, the air was brisk, but the silence had been oppressive. The senation of the world holding its breath was palpable. I felt I was being judged by some unseen force, but I've had this feeling for most of my life. I poured the milk, knelt down, and closed my eyes. Leaving myself at their mercy and scared shitless. Lmao
It has been so quiet and I found myself dazed. I almost expected something to reveal itself, but instead....after a couple of minutes...I got this intense feeling of being watched. Like there was a presence in front of me. I opened my eyes to see dark orbs staring me in the face. It was a dog that had crept up and stood less then 2 feet in front of me. A golden retriever at that. It had this unnervingly serious and deep look on its face. The eyes reflected the woods and my expression. The dog seemed less like a dog and felt more like something else that was observing me...Deeply. Eyes are the windows to the soul, as they say. The dog's demeanor then changed entirely once it's owner came over the bend in the path. It backed up, shook itself and then looked back at it's owner then me before running off. I was up on my feet before the owner could get an idea of what happened.
I find situations like the one in the stories and my own to be an admission and proof that we aren't that far away from believing in things like our ancestors, once did. They left their tales with us, because the natural world is a unpredictable environment. In all aspects, physically and spiritually. We're protected by our cities and towns, but a wooded area, no matter how small presents a certain mystery and invitation into the unknown. These betwixt and between places of high strangeness. Where the energies are more potent. Just be careful and aware as much as you can. Always follow your gut!
The silence is the worst. When I lived in South Dakota, I use to walk the paths by the river. They were wild but in the middle of town. One of my walks just as I turned off the paved path, onto the dirt trail, and suddenly there was silence. The hairs on my neck stood and goosebumps appeared. I should have heard traffic and the near by river. I turned around and went home.
Ignore Relaxing Walks. Clearly they've never experienced that feeling. I have. it's primal. You were smart to listen.
Like animals. We humans have a pre-installed "Radar" survival instinct to get to a safe haven when our souls sense danger approaching.

@@RelaxingWalks Im not talking about when the woods go quiet, , I agree with you....nothing spooky about it. I am referencing a time where yes, the woods did go quiet, and I mean silent. I think I've experienced the Silence, once. My cat is an indoors cat, but during summer I take her outside so she can get some fresh air and hunt bugs, but she only goes outside on a leash. We do live in the countryside, so there is a threat of predators at least in theory (though they don't really come into people's yards, but it's always smart to keep an eye out), and there's a road right next to our house, so I don't want to let my cat roam freely, she could get lost, get hurt or even die.
So, I was outside with my cat, allowing her to roam the yard as she does normally. The house/yard is surrounded by fields in all directions except east, where across the road there's forest. As we were hanging out in the yard, I suddenly noticed that everything had gone silent. There were no birds singing, no wind, the trees weren't moving or making any sounds, and all the butterflies that my cat had been hunting had suddenly disappeared, along with all other bugs. It was dead quiet, and eerie. But the worst part was that my cat spotted something. She began staring in a very specific direction towards the road, into the forest, with her fur all poofed up. She would not let her eyes off whatever she was staring at, all she did was very, VERY slowly and quietly move around a bush, slightly towards to what she was staring at so she could get a better view of it.
After a minute or two, my cat's fur un-poofed and she finally started looking around again, and wind returned with some sounds of nature too, and we continued her walk as normal. But I have no bloody clue what my cat saw. I tried so hard to spot what she had seen, but for the life of me I couldn't see anything unusual on the road or in the trees that could've scared my cat like that. I have NO idea what scared her, just none.
Dogs' senses are one thing, but cats are at a whole different level of sensing as I have heard from people.
Fffffff that’s scary! I would have freaked
The disappearing foot incident reminds me of the cases where folks describe suddenly realizing the area they are in has "changed" or they appear to be somewhere else. Perhaps the park ranger narrowly avoided slipping into one of these zones.
That also might be why missing people can't see or hear others looking for them. Like being on the other side of the mirror.
@@jaysonraphaelmurdock8812 Exactly. Or in some cases they felt they were being pursued by "shadow people" that they can't quite see...as if there is a veil of sorts separating them.
It would explain why people end up hiking through a Bizzaro version then suddenly things are normal?.
@@MT-ll3tu Yes...you're walking along and then suddenly you're in an alternate reality. And maybe some don't come back...
Or could explain why people vanish immediately, and other say they were right there with them. Very strange!
I’ve experienced the Silence. Back when I worked at the Ape Cave, near the end of the summer season, we had a really slow day and I went on a little adventure with one of the rangers during my break. We drove up one of the service roads to go elk-spotting because she wanted to show off her animal calls.
Once we got to the clearing, everything went dead quiet. It was the middle of the day, weather was great, but every single hair on my arms and legs stood on end. I wasn’t afraid of the woods, by that point I’d grown comfortable to working out in the middle of nowhere, but there was something so different about this moment.
I had a huge moment of dissociation where it almost felt like I wasn’t in my body anymore (partly a side effect of my anxiety disorder, but this was the first time in years I’d had an episode like that). I got hit by some serious vertigo, and even my ranger buddy looked concerned, and we got the hell out of there.
I am still having "pins and needles" feelings all over my body from the entity luring the kids into the woods. Great job, again guys.
That one gave me the heebeejeebees. Such a simple premise but your imagination can just picture it. So unnerving and creepy.

BEDTIME STORIES INCLUDING DAVE PAULIDES' MISSING 411 WORK??? *NOTHING* BEATS THIS ONE!! Can we have part one to part 20? 30? 40?... Ha! Much love from Northern Indiana ❤️
I felt that sudden "quiet fear" sitting in a hot tub out back a large cabin that 5 high school guy friends of mine rented up in the smokey mountains near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It was a 35 year reunion. I was alone round 11pm. Scared me so bad. I slowly got up and retreaded back inside and made sure the door was locked tight.
I've been regularly in the jungle when I was young, out of love being among it. It was the tropical jungle of my country, with its unique dense forest and mold all over. but sometimes you find part of the woods that just make you paralyzed and can't enter. I don't know if it was fear or what.. once I force myself to enter one such region..it was just like entering another realm, then that was, my first experience of the silence. it's eerily quiet, you got that overwhelming anxiety, and your senses just tingle all over.
usually, I take a knee and try to calm myself down, but that time it was just difficult. It's just a feeling that you want to get out of there as soon as possible, and that's just what I did. I slow my pace after I hear nature sounds again, and realize that I was so wet with cold sweat, so cold despite the bright day.
I feel more relieved when I see people working in the jungle (trying to get some wild bee honey or hunting) passing by with that odd looking in their eyes. One of them said, Don't get into that part of the jungle, and when I say why, he just repeated the sentence and walks away.
sorry for my grammar :)
It’s about damn time! I thought I was dreaming when I saw the thumbnail. You guys are the absolute best at telling these stories. Top-tier content.
The seemingly paranormal incidents and beings seen throughout our worlds wilderness is fascinating, especially when you consider,in some locations, these tales can date back millennia...
You guys don't miss. Cannot wait for next episode. Thank you also for covering Dave's work. Very important.
I experienced this in the deep woods of South Carolina I was hiking for several miles off the beaten path searching for an old 1800's road. Suddenly everything went silent and I seemed to forget where I was who I was and what my purpose was for being there. After a couple minutes passed I suddenly snapped out of it and all noise returned. I was really shaken by the experience and turned around and left the same way I came. It was the first time that ever happened to me and hasn't happened since.
I watched this with my wife last night. Have to say it was very personal and disturbing. This EXACT thing happened to me in 2005 while I was snowmobiling alone that March in Baraga county Michigan in the Upper Peninsula near Mount Arvon, which is the highest point in the state. We've watched Missing 411 videos by David Paulides before and when I saw the subject of the video, before starting it I retold her my story and how it felt since I'd heard of the "Silence" before and suspected it might be related to my experience. After watching it I was pretty rattled, and not much rattles me. It's likely I nearly went missing that day in a 411 case before that term was identified. I'm sure there are many stories by others out there, but I'd be happy to share my tale with Bedtime Stories if they'd like to include it in a video.
Sorry in advance for the long post, but -- After years of collecting tons of ghost story/true mystery/paranormal books and magazines, I decided on a big project of reading them and making notes on similar themes or phenomena. Things I've noticed so far:
There is more to "The Silence" than just silence. Some witnesses near roads (or actually driving) claim that all the traffic is gone as well until the "Silence" passes, then suddenly there are cars again. After outlining such an event, author Leslie Rule wrote [Ghosts Among Us, 2004]: “[I]t seemed to me that the ghost was not visiting her plane, but she was visiting his. The fact that all the other traffic vanished from the busy thoroughfare indicated that Angela unknowingly took a paranormal detour." [p. 167]
Even more extreme: I'm finding more and more tales of people claiming to be in their own homes or in the middle of town finding that they are suddenly alone -- as if everyone -- and sometimes also every bird and animal -- on earth has vanished. Accompanying this is the sense that the world is "darker", as if the sun has almost burned out. Then things pop back to normal. I started watching "Stranger Things" just last week, and that show's "Upside-Down" sounds remarkably like this phenomenon.
Something almost common but I never noticed it before: In about one out of every ten haunting or poltergeist stories, there will be weeks or months of typical spookiness -- filmy spectres, moving furniture, footsteps on stairs, etc. Then, usually once -- just once -- one person will be alone in the house and hear someone they know -- mother, sister, brother, etc. -- calling their name from some far point of the building, like the attic or a back bedroom. As they go to see what this person wants, they will glance out the window and see the person calling them standing across the yard -- too far away for them to have been audible, in fact.
As this last scenario kept repeating itself in the paranormal literature, I began to get the impression that the entire haunting was engineered to hide this "call" by burying it in a plethora of other "ghostly" events. And has anyone ever successfully answered this "call"? I don't recall reading of anybody claiming to. Perhaps those who did did not come back . . .
You, my good dude, have given me much to think about
How much do I have to pay to get number 2 implemented into my life 24/7? I have almost zero, not quite zero, but almost zero faith in human decency.
I’ve thankfully never experienced “The Silence” before, as I’m certain I would have remembered such a terrifying event. But the kids nearly going missing off their backyard in rural Michigan did make me pause. I’ve had a couple weird things happen to me at my parent’s house, and as a Michigan resident I never hear much of paranormal or anomalous stories unless I go looking.
One of the more recent events that makes me shudder is something that happened around dusk, I was about.. maybe 18-19 at the time, and I was alone.
I was standing on the boundary between my family’s garage (a repurposed 2-story barn) and the large stretch of open land that makes up the back half of the property. I stared out at the tree line as I often do, watching the back boundary all the way out to the cornfield marking the property line.
I like to do this to watch for deer or other occurrences, and sometimes I simply space out to think while I listened to the sounds outside. On this occasion though, I witnessed one of the strangest noises I think I’ve ever heard, minus a bird that sounds like a cat meowing.
It sounded like someone.. or someTHING calling for help. Sort of a long, drawn-out “He-elp…He-elp.” Now immediately I thought it must just be some strange bird call or maybe a coyote making noise. So I sat and listened, but didn’t move.
Normally I would have gone to investigate the strange noise, giving in to my natural curiosity and bolstered by the safety of my own yard. But it was getting too dark for my liking, and I felt that the call was coming from a back corner of my yard, near a thin strip of woods and the neighbor’s cornfields at the back boundary of our property.
I also got this growing sense of unease, similar to whenever I hear a pack of coyotes howling and yipping while they hunt in the area. So I decided to go back inside instead, thoroughly spooked.
I am an Australian but many years ago I travelled to the UK to backpack around the country. I experienced this silence while staying in the western part of Wales, while riding a bike I had hired through the countryside. I have the flu right now but when I feel a bit better I might take some time to relate my experience here.
I had read about the experience of two hikers in Australia on Quora.
Please tell us more
I am starting to think the silence is related to 'infrasound'. A lot of times people describe other things along with the silence, like seeing things distorted, or things shaking, that is what infrasound causes.
Fun part of growing up in Alaska: experiencing the silence several times as a child and assuming it was normal until I told my dad about this series. Another one of those “thought this was a funny story until I told someone else and wondered why they suddenly looked alarmed,” moments 😅
I think a lot of these strange disappearances are somehow connected to a parallel universe. This can explain how people can just vanish without their weapons, clothes, food wrappers things like that ever being found. Makes me think of that case from the 411 the hunted. Tom messick I believe was the gentlemans name was. His longtime hunting buddy who was with him on the day he disappeared said he heard a strange noise, one he had never heard before or since during the time Tom went missing. Sounding like trap being shut or something. That has stuck with me. I feel like there is a lot we don't know about this universe and I think it's ignorant to rule out supernatural causes bc it doesn't fit into your idea of normal. I'm glad it's become a bit more ok and safe for people who have experienced paranormal or supernatural things to come forward than say 20 or 30 years ago. I don't personally believe in aliens or ghost but I think it's ignorant to assume everyone who comes forward with their stories are all lying. They risk being ridiculed and ostracized and alot of times they don't even want to be identified for fear of that. I cant say they do exist any more than I can say that they don't, I just personally haven't experienced anything paranormal or supernatural. That doesn't mean it isn't real.
I had a similar event happen to me in the Olympic mountains of Washington. I think the bed time stories crew would love to include it in their next round of 411 videos. How do I get in contact with you all?

My wife and I have experienced it too in the Olympics. That entire peninsula is creepy, with an exceeding high strangeness.
@@skycowboyrider yup lived here over a decade my wife is from here I well versed in the woodsman lifestyle but the deep woods up here just have a strange vibe to them especially if you get away from the touristy spots
@@bussinjustin943 So, the hairs on my arms are straight up as write this. We both encountered a strange sense in two locations on a weekend outing on the peninsula. First, we felt a strong heaviness on the beach near Cape Elizabeth near Taholah. It was as if something was physically pushing us to get out of the area. It was very strong and unrelenting. When we began feeling it, it was evening, the sun was setting over the ocean, and we were all alone. It also got very cold, very quickly. We couldn't get into the car fast enough. Next place that seemed unnerving was at the Bogachiel State Park not far from the Hoh River. Again, we had a feeling of being watched during our stay, as well as experiencing the same heaviness as we did at the coast. But the difference that time, our possessions and gear seemed to shuffle from one place to the next. At first, we blamed each other, but soon realized that neither of us were moving the items. After that night, we couldn't wait to get out of the area, get on the ferry and head back to Seattle. We haven't returned since. Our trip over there had been in the summer of 1990. Even today, I still remember the sense of darkness all around us.
I have actually experienced the “silence” while in the woods. I was 18 at the time with a girl and we went into the woods to fool around *wink*. It was a very small patch with a railroad intersecting the middle.
As we made our way towards the tracks at about 11am we never reached them until we entered a spot that we’ve never seen or knew was there. It went dead silent and the sky became like the sun was setting with the air feeling a bit heavier than usual. We decided to leave and we kept walking and walking in the same direction for about 15 minutes until the sound came back with the sky returning to its former self.
That was 2 years ago at the height of the pandemic but I still remember it and reminded of it time by time. We were not under an drugs, alcohol or anything like that.

What gets me about the kids' story is what if it wasn't just one creature, but several luring them into the woods as a pack. Maybe it only appeared like one creature moving super fast, but in reality there were other creatures hiding behind each subsequent tree. It's funny how in nearly all these stories we assume it's just one creature when it could very well be multiple.
Oh my god

Thank you so much for sharing about the Missing 411. Dad had first learned about the Missing 411 documentary over a year ago, and watching the documentary with him it is understandable that such bizarre disappearances or close encounters with the unnatural would be enough to unnerve anyone.

I lived in the woods in rural Indiana and experienced The Silence a couple of times while walking my dog. We rushed back into the house immediately. It was freaky and extremely unsettling.
Another chilling and absolutely stunning episode!
I loved the art, and I like how that one scene with the cascading stream was rendered in simpler, broader strokes reminiscent of the early BTS episodes, it was a nice bit of nostalgia, still perfectly fitting in with the rest of this episode's exquisite imagery.
The creature lurking behind the trees gave me goosebumps! Beautiful! Or, uh, beautifully executed might be a slightly better way to put it...
Thank you for your hard work!
I experienced the silence a couple times at night while on patrol in Iraq. The desert is a creepy quiet place on a good night. When everything goes dead silent it is unsettling beyond words.
I heard these stories elsewhere and you do a great job telling them again.
Beautiful artwork. The sketch of the mountain Stream and trail at the end of the video just draws me in. I did a lot of hiking and camping in my youth and have experienced “the silence” myself. It’s as if you walk into another dimension where everything was the same and yet somehow different. The “lonely places” as I’ve come to call them, even when I return to those spots the feeling persist like I’m the first person to ever set foot there.
Some close calls there. Once again, brilliantly produced, presented, narrated and illustrated. Thanks Guys.
I know the ranger was smart to not put his head in the invisible portal, but c'mon! It would drive me crazy wondering what was on the other side.
I grew up in a very rural area and my grandmother and I used to go into the woods to find various plants that could be dried and sold and to find berries to pick, etc. I've experienced this weird silence. It's like you can't even hear your own breath. It's very very strange. Fortunately nothing bad happened. I suppose their is a rational explanation but I've never heard anyone describe one.
These multi part episodes are gold.
It's been over a week just so ready for the next one
I've experienced this unnerving silence on more than one occasion. Usually I became highly alert for eminent danger. Yet in one encounter I walked up upon a cow and a 2 or 3 week old calf standing absolutely still as if frozen staring toward the west at nothing. They didn't even swat at the flies buzzing around their hindquarters. The normal sounds started up as if they never stopped and the cow and calf panicked when they noticed me about 20 feet away. This is just one of many of these weird experiences I've had with this odd silence and yes it does not feel like something that belongs on earth or more accurately nature.

Bedtime Stories: "See y'all next week!"
**Goes missing 411 for two weeks.
The case of the children reminds me of what my Grandfather (a Polish immigrant) told me about a monster dwelt in the woods near his home.
He told me that in the days of old the monster, as much shadow as it was flesh, was sent by the devil to prey upon the children of the village. It was once defeated by Knights of the King and the Teutonic Order.
He ended that the monster may have been defeated but the forces of darkness cannot die till the return of Christ. It was kept at bay by knights, but with no knights left, it is free to hunt. So beware of the forest and the thing that is of flesh and shadow that wants to play.

In my state(not United States) we aren't allowed to respond to whistles, shout and chopping of wood or trees in the forest. Sometimes they don't comes from people but bad spirits. If you respond and they come you will likely be never seen again. Only few rare cases of people being found again. The returned mainly say they were in some forest they have never been before and they just reappear where they were lost/taken after an hour or two, sometimes after weeks.
This was riveting!!
