Why can’t Yasmin ever debate in a calm and rational manner? I worry for her blood pressure.
Judith doesn't know what she's talking about. Private schools do pay VAT on products they purchase, whether that is books or building renovations. The loophope that private schools will have after this VAT charge is established is that they will now be able to claim BACK VAT on what they purchase. I have no idea why people ramble utter nonsense when they have no clue. Yasmin included!
So the only people who want to do the best for their kids are the ones who send their kids to public schools.

That's not the argument. What's the point of charging vat on parents for sending their kids to pvt, is the issue.

They aren't anywhere as close as public schools. We can't pretend about this
The silly old women talking about "Eton Boys" - this kind of nonsense just sets the wrong picture about independant schools. There are very few "posh schools" in the sector, many strugle to keep going. If people choose to pay for the same thing twice, once through their taxes and once after tax, why try to clobber them again?

Forget the politics of envy, the numbers dont add up :
1. If these schools charge VAT then that will also mean that they can reclaim VAT on what they buy. None of Labours numbers show the net VAT intake, only gross.
2. For every child that now has to go to state school instead of private, these is a cost of £7000+ to the state. Again, this figure is ignored.
3. For every child that now has to go to state school instead of private, the state class sizes go up. I have seen this locally when 3 small independant schools went under. The state schools struggled to take teh numbers but had to.
4. How many foreign children will no longer come to the UK to be schooled? What is the impact to the UK economy of this?
This is just the politics of envy.
At the end of the day, if you are prepared to pay the fees, you are prepared to pay an extra 20% in tax, if a private education is so much better for your child.
How about public schools increase their standards. Those who send there kids pay for public schools. Give them their money back.

What nonsense! They are non profit making organisations who dont have to charge VAT but they cant reclaim it either! Nobody is giving these schools tax payers money and the sums dont actually add up.
