I like to use graphite paper to transfer my drawings to may watercolor paper before painting because I don't want to damage my expensive watercolor paper by erasing on it too much. Today I will show you how to make graphite transfer paper and save some money. You will pay a couple of dollars a sheet for this in an art store but you can make it yourself in minutes. It is even better than most brands you can buy because there is no wax that can mess up your painting.
You will need thin typing paper and a pencil or graphite stick.
Rub the graphite over the paper in a smooth even coating and use it just like any transfer or carbon paper. You can even erase your lines after you are done painting in watercolor if you like!
If you want a white transfer paper simply coat the paper with chalk, it will not last as long as the graphite paper (which will last for years) but it is even easier to make more as ordinary chalk can be colored broadly on it's side, or you can just chalk the back of your pattern and transfer.
Let me know if you have any questions!

Diy transfer paper:
First take your transfer paper
You can really find ARMYs anywhere😜. Hi
lmao right? misleading title. I thought we were gonna smear some charcoal on some paper or something to make our own. that's probably the true DIY way to do it
i was right on the money. Turns out she talks about it at 1:20
So simple but a life changer! Thanks Lindsay!
I do this all the time but I have recently changed to a charcoal pencil. I rub the paper with a kleenex when done to remove the loose dust and shake the page over the wastebasket. Like you said, it can smudge, but the smudges erase really easily with a kneeded eraser--I pat the w/c paper, not rub it because that will smear it and make it worse. I also lay a wooden ruler over the picture while I'm tracing so my hand won't press the charcoal sheet onto the paper too much and make smudges.
It works really well with the Inktense pencils. I can go over the lines with the colors I want to paint later, then set the Inktense with a little water. Then there are no pencil lines that show in the picture.
THANK YOU!!!!
regular pencil?
I had an art teacher who taught us this, I have never bought transfer paper I have always done this : )
Finally you have confirmed what I have experienced with art store graphite paper...it does leave a waxy coating and my watercolor would not stick to the paper where I had traced my design. I definitely do it just like you do now! THanks so much!
Thank you so much! Needed transfer paper for a project due tomorrow (I’m a terrible planner) and I didn’t have any. You’re a lifesaver! 💕
I found this useful as I am searching for transfer paper for a sewing pattern. I have used pencils for quilting but always on the wrong side of the fabric so I’ll do a tester to see if it washes out. It would definitely be useful. Thank you
Wonderful tip, Lindsay. Love your art.
We had a snow day as well....but because it was going to be too COLD! School cancelled for low temps in Atlanta
Thank You, I was not in the mood to look for carbon paper to finish this project. Also nice tip about using chalk for darker surfaces.. which is what I needed for blue jean fabric.
Great idea, Lindsay! By the way, you are an amazing artist. Your watercolors are lovely.
Thanks for the tip. You actually solved a problem for me. A money making problem. Huge!
This is an AWESOME idea! Transfer paper is so expensive! And I can hardly find carbon paper anymore. This is too cool. I can let my neighbor kids make the paper for me and it will keep them occupied while I babysit them...heh heh heh heh.
jaskbanner check eBay for fax machine paper.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, OMG THIS WAS REALLY HELPFUL THANK YOU!!!
:oooooo It works with charcoal sticks too! Thank you 2014 woman, thank you.
Awesome tutorial
Thank you! Cheers!
If I were to use a pencil, what pencil on the graphite scale would I use?
thank you so much! i can't believe i never thought about this!
Thanks so much for this technique! Really came in handy!😊
I have made black and colour carbon paper making video for my channel which are cost effective and excellent performable.I like and enjoy this video "diy transfer paper"
That's major help thank you Soooooo 🙏 much
Couldn't you do that on the back of your drawing paper but only at the actual drawing so you don't have to do the whole page? From someone with RA in my hands... OH and when you trace the lines it won't make indentations in the watercolor paper?
Teri Williams you would have to press really hard to dent the paper.
I love how u say drawing
Nice idea! Thank you! Keep the videos coming, you have great tips.
Awesome!! I will be using this idea. Thanks for the video.
Love it
I make charcoal transfer paper for watercolor paintings. the charcoal moves out of the way of the paint and you are left with nearly no lines on the finished painting. plus it is much easier to erase. you could also use chalk pastels but I prefer charcoal. :)
Could I use this to transfer onto shoes? I'm not very good at drawing on smaller surfaces so I was just wondering
youre a hero thanks
this is great tysm!
What a great idea, thanks! 😉
Thank you so much for sharing this! :)
Hi Lindsey, I remember doing this in school, Would this work to transfer a drawing on to fabric, So that you could color it with fabric paints, Just curious, TFS hugs Rosemary =D
it should:)
Can i put my logo on my t shirt with this custom made paper?
Love this tip tutorial!!!! A++++++++++ Thank you so look much
Great idea. I am just wondering. Could you scan the drawing and then print it out? Can you tell I am kinda lazy?
The thick watercolor paper will jam my printer and the ink will run when wet. You can try it but those are my concerns.
thefrugalcrafter .
I had not thought about the watercolor paper being thick. I just discovered recently after about 18 months, that the ink for my printer is waterproof. I am a slow slow learner. chuckle
Will this trick work on a tracing paper as well? Thanks in advance! ✌🏻❤
Yes
Hi Lindsay, I have a whole wad of blue carbon paper - any suggestions on how I can use it up? Like you I hate waste!
Many thanks, Kaitlyn
huh, it is probably for architects and contractors so I'm not sure what you would do with it but you could always donate it to a high school shop class that teaches drafting.
Omg thank you sooo much your awesome
does it work on shirts im guessing no
I'm starting to get back into my crafting a lot more so most of what I did have I can't find because it's in my messy storage shed. So if you don't have charcoal I saw your tip above for using chalk on dark paper will black chalk work for the white paper?
yes, but like charcoal it will smudge.
hi, and thanks. Can I do that on my canvas?
Aly CMilan hi!, you can use this method on canvas using graphite/charcoal/chalk. I've done it a few times. just make sure not to touch the paper to much and only the part your tracing or else you'll have dirty spots to clean up depending on the type of graphite/charcoal you use (that's just my preference since I am kind of OCD). if the paint is dark then use white chalk or white/light grey charcoal. one tip is to tape the paper down to the canvas by the corners. Hope I helped :)
2020 anyone?
thank you :)
Lindsay may I use a graphite pencil to create this transfer paper? If do what shade or strength?
Yes, use the darkest and softest lead like a 6b. Even an HB will work but you will have to press hard.
Thank you so much for this information
I had no idea 💡
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich can you draw through 3 sheets of paper and still get an impression?
Cedric Taylor you will only get an impression on the sheet under the graphite sheet. Hope that makes sense.
I guess what I'm asking is if I took 4 sheets of paper. 2 normal sheets, the third (graphite prepared on the back) and a 4th sheet. If I drew on the 1st sheet. Would the 3rd sheet make an impression on the 4th sheet? Curious...
Cedric Taylor oh, gotcha, if the paper is thin it might work, if it is thick like watercolor I don't think you will have enough pressure:)
ARE YOU ON SPEED?
is graphite and charcoal the same thing? I know.....crazy question.... :) thanks!!!!!
nope, charcoal is from burned sticks and graphite is a rock:) Graphite is what pencil lead is made of. You can use charcoal but it will smudge.
oh....didn't know that...thanks so much!!!
Where can I find a graphite stick at are they at like hobby lobby or something and how much does it cost??
enano ramirez probably or any store that has a drawing/drafting section, it will be near the pencils and markers. They are not much, blick has them for 60 cents www.dickblick.com/products/generals-wide-compressed-graphite-sticks/ but you will pay more (maybe around a buck) in store.
In just tryin to make a bts hoodie 😬😂
Awesome!!! Thank you!!!!
PLS REPLY IS THIS WORKING ON T-SHIRT? PLS TELL CUZ I NEED IT FOR MY ASSIGNMENT AND I WILL PASS IT TOMORROW
No, it's not that kind of transfer paper
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich ugh ok I tout I can do it on T-shirt😫😫😫
It’s shocking that she can do stuff uninterrupted while her kids are home😂
Just let me print dekuuuuuu!
i wonder if it works on printing TShirts please if you know answer me ?
Yes
Fun fun fun!
Can you do this with fabric
Nicole Moores probably but i wonder if chalk would be less messy for you....
I do this all the time directly on the back of my computer print outs
I used to do that, but as Lindsay said, when done separately it means you can re-use it for other drawings too, so one sheet goes a long way.
THX SO MUCH XD I SUB'D AND LIKED
can the colours get transfered on the other paper
i❤youtube yes, if you use colored chalk
so if i take a pink chalk only pink colour will get transfered?
i❤youtube yup:)

+Henny Jazel Reyes yes

+jazel reyes mag subb ako sub back please
I wanted to make a body pillow.
Where do u get the paper at
you make it yourself or you can buy it premade at an art supply store:)
thefrugalcrafter .
Wow did u drink some coffee or what?
"Transfer" now means "print and iron" imagen to a shirt. This is "carbon transfer paper" which is not the same. In my country is just knowing as "carbon paper". So... Sadly was not usefull to me.
