Whiskey Vault etiquette: You don't say you're right/ you say you're not wrong! When someone suggests a tasting note you agree with you don't say yes/you say dammit in frustration that you didn't think of it first And finally, when you find a whiskey that is fabulous you don't use your words/you use loud noises and very expressive hand gestures..... This has been today's whiskey vault etiquette lesson.
I've had a bowman small batch sitting closed for about a year now that I just have never opened. I may have to do that today now thanks to you guys! Cheers!
Sadly, I saw stock of various A. Smith Bowman whiskies wasting away on the shelf at a New Hampshire State Liquor and Wine Outlet. They looked like they'd been there for too long and that some of it had evaporated to the point that the neck of the bottle had been vacated. Weird and sad.
I was recently in Richmond, VA and had a chance to discover A. Smith Bowman whiskies. I love how the various expressions are named after members of the Bowman family, similar to Hill Farmstead beers. I tasted a release of the Abraham Bowman at The Jasper and returned home with a bottle of the single barrel John J. Bowman. Good stuff.
I recall getting almost menthol fumes from Bowman Brothers in addition to a lot of rye spicy notes. A stand out, even if it wasn't my particular cup of tea.
yayyyy shoutout for yahara bay! i just visited there last weekend and had a wonderful time. they have a "single malt" distilled from a local IPA which is unlike anything i've ever tasted.
Tawny port is the only port aged in regular sized barrels. Ruby port usually don't get much contact with the wood since it ages briefly in huuuuge barrels (size of a car).
I'm halfway through a bottle of Weller special reserve and mostly it's classic wheated bourbon with a nice honey sweetness. But I just got a strong peanut butter out of my last sip from a mooches poor. Last week I got dark chocolate for the first time. Mind blowing how whiskey changes.
Man, so happy I got to go to Wigle Distillery. Those guys know about the Magnificent Bastards after the review on Oaxaca Rye. I went there because of it to get me a bottle(from Georgia mind you). I ended up with a bottle of this Kilted Rye as well. The distiller there is a cool dude. I'll repost my video of him and the distillery in the tribe.
I got to talk with Heather from Crooked Water Spirits at Distill America this year. She was definitely a highlight of the things we tasted and we mention to her in a few videos. The stuff is fantastic. I wish I’d known she was part of the school back then. I would’ve dropped my coin on her
I live in Washington, Pa, so I’ve seen Wiggle a lot, but not yet tried it, and to be blunt, it’s in large part due to their name and label, for a whiskey I just find it off putting. Like they are selling the alcohol equivalent of candy cigarettes. And I’m still fighting my “I will only drink bourbon from Kentucky” mentality. Though there are a handful of non-Kentucky bourbons I enjoy. One is another Pa bourbon, from a distillery not a mile from where I live. Liberty Poles is the name, I’m not sure they are even distributing outside this region yet. But they have a Peated Bourbon Whiskey that’s really good. They use a distinctive red corn local to the area. I’ll have to stop in there soon and see if they will send you a bottle to review, but Pa has so many screwy liquor laws.
Liberty Pole Spirits just released a limited edition cask strength (114.4 proof) Peated Rye whiskey. This release is made with actual peated malt sourced from Scotland. We'll have to get you a bottle to review.
The room looks a wee bit darker and it looks like it is a bit foggy outside. The rain and lightening effect was cool. In regards to Rex' question concerning using partly sprouted grains (like the partly sprouted almonds) I wonder, wouldn't it reduce the starch that you would want to convert to sugar and hence reduce the alcohol conversion as well as change the flavor?
This is an academic question, I have Celiac disorder and I miss drinking whiskey and I'm Canadian, from Nova Scotia, there's really really supposed to be really good whiskey around here does the fermenting process kill the gluten. please say yes
pet·ri·chor /ˈpeˌtrīkôr/ noun a pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather. "other than the petrichor emanating from the rapidly drying grass, there was not a trace of evidence that it had rained at all"
I toured the Breckenridge distillery a couple weeks ago (the wife and I were actually the only ones on the tour haha). I gotta say, it was pretty disappointing! It's a good thing the tour was free because the whole thing lasted only about ten minutes. The guide seemed bored with what he was talking about and only showed us two rooms: the original hybrid still and the barrel room. I asked "is this really the only still you guys produce all of your products on?" and he says "Oh, no this is just the original still we started with. I'd say 80% of everything we make comes from that room over there, but I'm not really allowed to show you that. You can stick your head in there and peek if you want to... I won't stop you." So I did and I beheld the largest column still I've ever seen in my life! It must have been 30+ feet tall with at least 15 chambers. I wouldn't have even been able to see that if I hadn't asked, and it sounds like they don't even show that room to anyone on regular tours. Must be something you only get on some kind of VIP tour? But then (here's where it get's even better) I paid $8 for a premium tasting package after the tour. The guide pours me their port finish, their high proof, and a PX cask finish. I get all stoked for the port finish (I'm also a big Angel's Envy fan), so he pours me a second sample of it and I'm just loving it. I gotta get a souvenir Glencairn because I'm collecting one from each distillery I tour, and the port finish bottles are right next to the Glencairns. Now, I had done my research before coming and got a price check on a few of their products to get an idea of what to expect. All of their whiskies are $15-$20 more expensive than the liquor store near my house! I bring the Glencairn over to the counter to pay and my tour guide is like "Ahh, you're not going to get a bottle of that port finish you liked so much??" and I say "Ummm... see here's the thing... I totally would but it's $20 cheaper at my local liquor store..." and he says "Oh, yeah that doesn't surprise me at all. I've seen it at Summit Liquors here in Breckenridge for $15 cheaper than we sell it. I don't blame you". I just don't get it. Seems like Breckenridge cares more about making money and growing as big and fast as they can, and bothers very little with exhibiting product craftsmanship and brand ambassadorship. Edit: I didn't even mention the fact that all of the samples were poured into plastic disposable church communion cups. Good luck nosing in that.
Hey gents! Just recently picked a couple new single malts - Springbank 10 and Glen Scotia 15. Have you guys reviewed these before? If not, would love to know your thoughts!
Alright, I'm going to add some Islay to a rye pour tonight and see what happens. I have the Knob Creek Rye and will probably go with Laphroig Quarter Cask.
Dammit ... I've seen both of those Crooked Water bottles ... can't remember if it was around here or in Minnesota and now I'm regretting not buying it!
So the calendar that Daniel did last year, ended up being crowd sourced through Indiegogo they have ended the campaign successfully, but you are still able to get most of the perks through the In demand feature. Wait a damn minute there Daniel, you just said it was so long ago that you were wearing "other colored shirts." The shirt you are wearing... As the person picky about the minutiae... What color is that shirt?
Akhil Pillai hahaha I was watching the vid again, going through the comments and I literally read this comment as that sound effect happened. Perfect timing lol
I think the protein content is a reason why this isn't a big thing. Most malting grains have been developed to not include much protein. The non chill filtered thing also would play into it as a lot of the haze is coming from protein that would need to be filtered out for stability sake. NB: a lot of my knowledge is based on homebrewing beer so this speculation could be wrong. I do intend on seeking out some of these sprouted almonds for a future batch though.
Malting rye might be problematic, owing to the high propensity of the moistened grain to develop ergot...likewise, corn is susceptible to aflatoxin when moistened.
Where would we be without you Chad? The rain effects, the episode number, the amount of patience you need to deal with all this Tomfoolery. Well done.
Chad clearly had a lot of fun and time on his hands for this episode. Keep up the magnificent work.

yes but it was magnificent

@@bigbud6842 is that why single malt Scotch is more expensive north of the border?

Petrichor, Poptarts, and Port. Oh my!
I LOVED the rain effect on the window! Great attention to detail. My compliments, good sir!
"HOLY CRAP I GOT POP TART!"
Guess I know what I'm trying my hand at getting next, then...

Barton 1792 is a Sazarac company as well, which is probably the source.
Another WI shoutout this episode- awesome! I live pretty close to Madison (where Yahara Bay is) so I'll have to check them out.

The Kilted Rye is incredible. Got to try it a couple weeks ago at the distillery. Unfortunately, it's $85... Way out of my price range. It's so good.
This episode really activated my almonds.
Damn it Rex! You didn't give the worthless tasting note, you let Daniel distract you!
The only worthless tasting note is the one you don't give.

Hmm. Maybe overdid the LQC (1tsp in 1oz or so). Sum was less than the parts.
Bowman is like 20 minutes from my house and haven't been. I sense a motorcycle trip to a distillery!
I just ordered the Texas blend! Now I need to plan a way to get from MN to TX? 🤔🤔🤔
Hey wiggle, know what would be better than a Laphroaig barrel? An ardbeg barrel...
11:15 “I like snow melt... it snowed here once...” that sentence aged well given the snow y’all had a few moths back hahaha
Honest question. How do people land these limited bottles? Like is it just going to the store once a week? Is there mailing lists?
Why would you redistill a already aged product? Doesn’t that set you back to square one as far as aging?
Gotta get my hands on that Bowman. I've always wanted to drink a pop tart 😂
You can’t say you’re going to tell us an interesting obscure flavor, and then freakin not tell us. My OCD has my eye twitching. Bzzt bzzt
Is there a magnificent plan for episode 1000?

Reverse. Do we know anyone using nuts in the mash? I would assume there is starches to convert in almonds etc... would add some unique character.
I've never heard of it in hard liquor but chestnut beer is definitely a thing so it would definitely be possible for whiskey
