- Emotions run high as John Ortberg opens this session with some stories about Dallas Willard. (Everyone there was sensing the preciousness of this time together because of Dallas's fragile health in the 8th month of his battle with pancreatic cancer.) John then reminds us that this gathering is not about Dallas, but it's about the wonder that there is a God who is as good as Jesus said he was.
Ortberg emphasizes the importance of life transformation through the practices and teachings of Jesus, advocating for a shift from performance-driven faith to authentic spiritual formation. He underscores that true transformation is possible by aligning one's life with the practices of Jesus.

My day began with a huge amount of physical destress as this body heads towards the finish line. But, your lecture brings me great comfort and inspiration as well as the many ways Dallas encouraged me for so many years. My prayer is that more church leaders like yourself will begin consuming our wayward churches today.

Apprenticeship to Jesus is for anyone and everyone, but once a car mechanic, stay at home dad, factory worker, divorced person, pregnant woman, pharmaceutical rep, attorney, state senator, baseball professional, college professor, fisherman, migrant worker, or abused wife decides to apprentice themselves to Jesus, the relevancy will become real.
Pastors are wonderful but kept from teaching discipleship to Jesus. They have to make sure cash, buildings and people are in good supply. I’ve said this since the late ‘90’s, it doesn’t cost much to run the kingdom of God! As Dr. Willard said, it doesn’t take a special talent or much of anything except apprenticeship to Jesus as a witness begets another disciple.
Dr. Willard figured out what worked for him. We just do the same with the assurance that it will occur.
You nailed it. Such a simple but profound concept and yet 90% of Christian’s think being a Christian consists only of a profession of faith and going to church and so they are not transformed and therefore they cannot help to transform the world to mirror the Kingdom.
