    I first saw this movie as a child and it has shaped my vision of how I see our country and many of my beliefs. to me it is one of the greatest movies of all time. My Father was in the 42nd Rainbow division that freed Dachau- can't spell it but you can look it up. This scene applies so much today- More than ever.

    Beautifully written, performed (by Leon Ames & Co.), and shot. I've seen that scene any number of times, and read it, but it never gets old. It was written by Master Sergeant Robert Pirosh (1910-1989), one of the "battered bastards of Bastogne," who wrote the entire picture.

    That's a great Chaplain. Chaplains bring hope and faith to the soldiers during their most desperate times. I have carried the voice and the words of this Chaplain with me for many years. Even though its a movie, it's very touching, totally authentic, and added so much to the story line. We won World War II through the power of God and his word delivered to the troops in combat, by Chaplains.

      As a young Lieutenant we had a chaplain named Day who was famous for his ability to march between units with pockets full of candy. No one really knew his denomination, but that wasn't important to us. Chaplain day was a great listener, and if some one was troubled he seemed to know about it and would spend time out in the field with that person until he felt a bit better.
      We loved him.
      His replacement was not held in as high a regard.

      I would say yes, Ronnie. It is really a good thing that second in command Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe was in charge. He was the expert in use of artillery. I think those 155mm expended something like 20,000 shells, in a matter of days. It would make the Germans think twice. Also, I get a kick about General Patton coming to the rescue. An element of Patton's: the 1st Battalion of the 506th PIR arrived just ahead of the 101st and were responsible for helping to turn back the first assault by the German's.

As liason, with orders to keep the roads south open. Failing that, to retrograde South towards his command. He knew the Germans were up to something, and would likely move on Bastogne if they did attack. LOL, evertime the Germans attacked West, they used the Ardennes. My favotite scene in my favorite movie. Watched it with my dad back in the 1960s, an Army vet and survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. He felt it was one of the few movies about the war that wast a bunch of "Happy Horse Sh*t". Many of the men in the background of that scene were veterans of the 101st AB Div and of the Bulge and were working on the film as technocal advisors. James Whitmore (Sgt. Kinnie) was a Marine in the Pacific.

He was one of the many of the greatest generation lived thru the depression they did not want a hand out just a job and then went to the recruiting stations saying " where do I sign up. " pride in themselves and love of country that is what got them thru those dark days in December 1941. Shame today the U.S. armed forces can't even fill their recruiting requirements the selfish has replaced the selfless.

    It seems to me that the call for freedom of religion" has morphed into "freedom from religion." the last time I heard controversy about the "under God" part of the pledge of allegiance, it was about being forced to hear it, not being forced to say it.
    Similarly, we have "freedom from speech" where speech codes at universities reflect a perceived right against being offended.
    It is this aspect of the "attacks on religion" I find worrisome.

Not from stupidity, but lack of education. Plenty of white folks too. Units like The Red Tails stand out as exceptions because they were made up of and led by, better educated people. I mean the Non Coms and junior officers, many of whom were black. Having white officers in command was necessary from a beauraucratic stance.

'Because finally, "the equal right of every citizen to the free exercise of his Religion according to the dictates of conscience" is held by the same tenure with all our other rights.'

    • @geodes4762
      @geodes4762 3 роки тому +2

      Yes, the integration of the black into the Army occurred in 1949. There were numerous all black combat, combat support and combat service support units that took part in the Battle of the Bulge. The defense of Bastogne has largely been depicted as a battle of only lightly armed paratroopers fighting by themselves against armored columns of SS soldiers. The fact is that the outskirts of Bastogne were manned by three teams of armored forces from Combat Command B of the 10th Armored Division-Team Cherry, Team Desorbry and Team O’Hara. These three teams did the lion’s share of setting up blocking points on the roads leading into Bastogne in many cases forcing the tracked German vehicles to use many narrow unimproved trails. In addition, there were a host of other non-101st units in Bastogne that had been driven back into the town from Wiltz and other towns further east that had been occupied by US forces previous to December 16 when the battle started. No doubt, the 101st led the defense of Bastogne, 101st troops made up the largest number of the troops and took the most casualties. Without the support of CCB and the other support units, I think is doubtful the 101st could have held out on their own. I am sure that is heresy amongst 101st alumni, but it represents truly what happened.

You're right about all the values of freeing others, but when you look f.e. at US foreign policy in Latin America, especially Central America, from the late 1800s until pretty much now, you see a very different picture: military intervention motivated by economic interests.
    I'm not talking about religion here, but when you talk about how the US always gives resources etc to free others, you do not do justice to a large part of history.

    "Let us all pray in his own way to his own god". This is Hollywood's attempt to put it's athiestic, pagan, self belief, doctrine on the world. There are definitely many gods, as this scene shows. The scriptures are very clear that there is only one Father, and he is not a god. Definition in hebrew for God=Demon. And the archeological evidence backs up the scriptures that His name is Yahweh, not God. Great movie, maybe, but this message is totally unscriptural.
