    A mystery that may or may not be so mysterious after all...

    Thank you for watching and I hope you got something from this episode. What happened in the case of Scott Guy? Who is responsible? Does Ewen Macdonald's past behavior point to a darker pattern of behavior? Perhaps something that would have inevitably evolved into something even more serious? Let me know what you think in the comments.

      It really is. In the summer of 2015 to 2016 a group of Caucasian teenagers from wealthy families (18 and 19) went on a theft spree around where I lived (I went to school with 3/4 of them) and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars of stuff, all for a thrill and some fun. They ended up with varying amounts of home detention and community service. At the SAME time in the SAME district court, a Maori man who stole some fish from a fishing boat to feed his kids was sent to jail. Nationwide outrage for months

      I'm certainly not going to envy the job but defense attourneys are central to maintaining a fair and balanced trial. It's easy to think of them in terms of O.J. Simpson and other obviously guilty cases but think of all the times they were defending innocent people, especially during times of racism where the first black guy in the vicinity would be charged. Defense attourneys may fight for the freedom of sick bastards, but they ensure the rights of everyone.
      Also it's a bit harsh you think his suicide is evidence of his conscience, the man should have gotten help, not prove himself morally capacious.

    • @Gunners_Mate_Guns

      @@PhilosophyofElivagar You misunderstood me.
      I fully agree that our legal system, premised on innocent until proven guilty, requires defense attorneys to provide a bulwark against star chambers and kangaroo courts, but what I had in mind were the ones the likes of a William Kunstler or a Bruce Cutler, both of whom took the gig knowing full that their clients were guilty, but whom still took the job because one was an openly anti-American scumbag taking the opportunity to strike a blow for his ideology, and the other knew Gottie was guilty as hell, yet he took the gig out of raw greed and because he liked advancing organized crime's ability to get away with it.

    • @PhilosophyofElivagar
      @PhilosophyofElivagar 3 роки тому +6

      @@Gunners_Mate_Guns I'm not American so I'm not familiar with the men you named but I'll take your word for it because I trust your judgement. Fundamentally, the defense attorney is only as powerful as the prosecution, judge, and jury allow him to be, as dictated by his success. The motivation of many men may be evil, just as the attourney for the prosecution may be the goon of a multi-million corporate corporate against a small innocent business - that bad actors exist in law is nothing new and certainly not determined by which side of the court they're on, both seek to establish _a_ truth, even if it is not _the_ truth, which is the closest thing we can do to justice.
      So we don't disagree, I think it's just a sad case where a man performed his end well and the other checks and balances didn't - their inadequacy vs his competence is what set MacDonald free.

      @kelvin martinez Who said no one cares about humans???? If we care for animals our compassion extends to humans as well. I chose to speak on animal cruelty as they don’t have a voice-we are their voice. Animals, Elderly and Children all need to be heard! Hope this kinda puts them into perspective for you. Kia ora Rob, this was a great video as I live about 45mins from Fielding NZ and the whole country was wrapped up in this trial so it was beneficial to hear details of the case left out by our media at the time. I haven't seen any of your content in a while so it was a nice surprise to see this case so close to home and also to see that it wasn't as dark as your previous uploads which benefited me as an audience member and hopefully you as a content creator. All the best, I'm a big fan and wish you well in the future.
