      @@Therestaurantbossstressing them , at an already stressful job.... By telling them they are fired. Even as a joke. Is a stupid waste of energy.
      Just tell them to write five things,......on paper, about why they want to work there and what they get from the job.
      And tell them to list five things they think they should improve or new techniques to learn.
      And five things the business can improve.

    I was trained by someone who all ways "dropped that hammer". Ruled with an iron fist. Yelling and throwing shot around. But with that I also saw my chief working overtime and took great pride in his work. A lot of people ask me why I let him talk to me like that. My reason is he took pride in his work and he also led by example. "LED BY EXAMPLE". Once we clocked out, he was the chillest uncle you ever met. But if we on the clock its work time. Take pride in your work. Be proud of your job. No matter what it is. A comedian in our home state told us. "You tell a lot of a person if you him sweep a floor" .

    I love the 'vision sharing' advice. We need to give a new hire something to engage them, beyond their initial joy with: "I've got a job". Will be defining the mission of my new business and post it for all to see. If core values and goals are the same (everyone on board) then differences in methods can be worked out. When a business and its employees have different core values, no amount of effort will bridge that gap.

    So you fire them then make them re interview and decide if you’ll rehire them? How many people walk out when you tell them they’re fired?

    • @Therestaurantboss
      @Therestaurantboss  5 років тому

      You don't actually fire the, it is just a metaphor and an exercise so you can hit the reset button and go through a proper on-boarding.

      @@Therestaurantboss Using metaphors with people who cannot understand your cute metaphor would be extremely unwise. Have you ever had a real conversation with people who barely speak English? Who do you think is working in these theoretical restaurants your blogging about? College educated suburban kids? Not in ANY of the restaurant kitchens I've ever worked in. At best the people who speak English are probably ex-cons. Have fun telling those guys they're fired and then explaining you were joking afterwards lol

    I've watched several of your videos and generally find them insightful. The click bait on this one fascinated me. Then I heard what your point was and it really did make me laugh because you obviously don't understand the mind of people who speak English as a second language or speak broken English. You go call your line cooks or dish washers into your office and tell them you're fired and watch what happens. Expect emotions to run the gamut from literally breaking down into tears to others throwing office furniture at you and cursing your entire family. Telling anyone you want to fire them is a 100% sure fire way to get people to hate your guts at best and at worst plot your demise. Wrong wording! I get your point, but your wording may actually get people seriously injured.

      @@Therestaurantboss Me neither. I just wouldn't employ your method in this case. For discussion sake I understand your dysphemism quite well. I do, however, think that a novice who watches this video and thinks he can pull this off in reality is in for quite a different reality. :)

    Is there anything you can suggest with regard to gaining insight into a business' professionalism? Is there a way top only search for the good ones?

    Hey, usually your videos are really helpful but this I disagree, firing everyone can be a risk to a catering business, buy the time you might try to rehire your staff some of them might have found a job already (atleast where I'm from that's how it is and if I was an employee that's what I would have done). A job is what we do for a living therefore if someone tries playing around with my job it would affect me personally, wouldn't feel safe working for someone that plays around like this so even if I'll be rehired I'd feel threatened and I'll still be looking for another job.

    • @Therestaurantboss
      @Therestaurantboss  7 років тому +1

      The idea is more hypothetical then actual. You are NOT actually going to fire them, you are just going to "Re-Hire" them.

    Sorry, this sounds like a bad idea. You can't parent your employees. You also cant change them. And your employees most definitely dont want to be interviewed again.

    • @Therestaurantboss
      @Therestaurantboss  5 років тому +2

      Your right you can't change employees, you can't parent them and they don't want to be interviewed again, but you can change the environment and the systems that they work in and if you have dramatically changed the environment they work in, then your expectations have changed. If your expectations have changed you would hire different employees and hire them differently. I hope you understand that I am not actually talking about firing your employees, its a just a metaphor for the process but I have done this many times with many clients and we see massive improvements.
