That was why his followers were so fanatical - the Zikists. But like today's Obidients, idealism made them vulnerable to ruthless charlatans like Asinwin Thiefnubu.
The Saurdana and Balewa impressed me a lot with their poise ! We shouldn't have rushed into the military coups , the civil war and all that bloodshed! That's what derailed Nigeria !!
IGNORANCE! The coup plotters were heroes of the kind that Nigeria did not deserve. You are probably unaware that the WWW killings went on daily in the West (Yoruba land) from 15 October 1965 to 15 January 1966 and only stopped with the intervention of NZEOGWU-IFEAJUNA & Co. A whopping non-stop 3 months of mayhem. The Fulani castration of the West (declaring a state of emergency, rigging out AG, imprisoning Awo, etc.) could only be halted from outside. The fact that the first coup was mainly in aid of the Yoruba is collaborated by Ademoyega - one of the 5 majors who in his book “Why we struck”. He stated that the D-day had to be brought forward, in order to prevent a total overrun of the West which had already been decided by the Balewa-led govt. According to Awo's Private Sec (Odia Ofeimun - his video is on UA-cam), the aim of the coup was to flush out the neo-colonialists from Yorubaland and make Awo the leader of Nigeria. Awo said so himself; quote: “the January coup authors had planned to release me from Calabar, fly me to Lagos, and install me as Head of State. The authors of the coup had no plan to govern the country under a military administration.” (See Obafemi Awolowo, My March Through Prison, Macmillan Nigeria Publishers Ltd, 1985; page 297). The principal targets of the coup were the leaders of the anti-Yoruba cabal (Balewa, Sardauna, Maimalari) and their Yoruba collaborators (SL Akintola, Fani-Kayode). Most of the other deaths (including those of Easterners like QMG Unegbe and Lt. Oduh) were collateral. All those who were pro-Awo were spared, including the NCNC leaders (led by Zik), who were in political union with Awo’s faction of the AG. IN FACT, THE FULANI HAVE BEEN PUNISHING THE IGBO FOR OVER 50 YEARS FOR DARING TO SAVE THE YORUBA. EVERY LIFE LOST IN THE CIVIL WAR IS AN INDIRECT RESULT OF THAT VENGEANCE. That is why in his later and more sober years Awo severely warned his lieutenants (including Pa Ayo Adebanjo and Prof. Banji Akintoye) to always work with the Igbo. That is also why Awo always chose an Igbo running mate even if it fetched him no vote. The supporters of Tinubu (a new SL Akintola) are repeating history because of ignorance so deep that no amount of regular education can cure it.
@@annefranciselizabeth3840 I don't know what you are on about, with your bogus interpretation of history! The coup failed!! It led to a counter coup and a pogrom of killings of Easterners in the North and of course the civil war (biafra) that led to the death of over 3 million people mostly Igbo! That was too heavy a price to pay by Nzeogwu and Ifeajuna's actions! Less than a thousand people died in Western Nigeria! As far as Balewa was concerned, it was a regional problem and the the autonomous Western region should have sorted itself out! I still believe the January 15 of 1966 was premature as it was needless!

@@aframaco9491 FALLACY! You cannot judge the rightness of an action only by its effect. Over 40 million non-German people died in WW II. That does not mean it was premature to attack Hitler. If you are a Nigerian, most of your travail is caused by the failure of the revolution led by Nzeogwu-Ifeajuna. Those were heroes who did the needful. If I was in their shoes I would do the same thing. The cabal led by Saraduna-Balewa would have still have taken Nigeria into a bitter Civil War even if they were not overthrown. The only unfortunate aspect of the events that followed was that the coup was re-cast as an Igbo coup and the very people whom the coup was trying to save joined the same Northern cabal to fight the Igbo. So it is them you should blame, not the revolutionaries.

@@annefranciselizabeth3840 who caused the WWW weti e killing? Most of you are so dubious that you think no one has brain enough to read the history. Nnamdi Azikwe and Tafawa Balewa claimed Awolowo planned a coup to topple their government without giving and substantial evidence in the court to support this claim, and despite all warnings then, Zik and Balewa sentenced him to a life in prison for a crime he never committed in 1963.
