Phill Brown engineered and co-produced both this and Laughing Stock. I'd recommend his book 'Are We Still Rolling' for a deep dive view on how these albums were made - pretty crazy levels of patience, dedication and commitment. And huge talent obviously! But that's what it takes to make the very best art I guess.

I wrote an essay about Spirit of Eden on Pop Matters for its 30th anniversary (September 2018). One of my top 5 favorite albums, alongside Storm in Heaven, Gene Clark - No Other, Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies, Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda. Spirit of Eden was as poetic in 1988 as Astral Weeks was in 1968 (one of my favorite albums of that decade, alongside Songs of Leonard Cohen, Scott 3 & 4, Five Leaves Left, Townes Van Zandt).

Alex, you should definitely review Colour of Spring, it's more conventional than their 4th and 5th albums but there are moments of avant garde, such as the brilliant Chameloen Day.

Such a classic. One of the bands I can honestly say I'm a big fan of. Mark Hollis' death hit me like a truck.
Colour of Spring definitely is worth doing, love it to pieces, very different though.
Future Days is a huge grower. I think Ege Bamyasi would be a better pick for a reaction.

I recommend listening to this album on a walk as the sun sets. By the time it ends it will be night and the end just feels so powerful. That was one of my most profound musical experiences ever.

I listened to Talk Talk from 'The Party's Over' to 'Laughing Stock' and I love the them all. I will admit that when 'Spirit of Eden' was released I was not sure what to think of it although I did like 'I Believe In You' instantly. It didn't take me long to love it and easily welcome 'Laughing Stock' when it was released. As with most artists, not all but most, you have to listen to the album several times before it grows on you. Because of 'Spirit of Eden' I liked ''Laughing Stock' after I first listened to it.

If you want to group Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden with a third album, the one to add is Mark H's solo album (which was until the last minute going to be a Talk Talk album called 'Mountains of the Moon').

    Good reaction!
I listened to this album a year ago following Mark Hollis' passing. I couldn't believe the guy that sang "It's My Life" was the same than had created this hell of a masterpiece.
A real groundbreaking album that made me regret not exploring Talk Talk work further beyond than their new wave era. It was the tragedy that brought me here.
'The Colour of Spring' is another great record, indeed.
PS: which is the guitar tunning for "Cemetry Gates" by The Smiths?

Been a few years since I've listened to this, it's really an album that should be listened to like once a year, the experience is amazing. I do prefer it over Laughing Stock personally, I think it's a bit more rich and interesting musically speaking, but maybe it is just a story of whether you prefer dawn or dusk
Also to me this album is a perfect definition of the term post-rock. It's not just generic crescendocore, it really sounds like something that goes beyond rock music

Spirit of Eden, and Laughing Stock are pretty much neck and neck as far as being outstanding works, with Laughing Stock taking only a slight preference for me.
Following Laughing Stock, Mark Hollis released his self titled solo album. All acoustic instrumentation, very sparse and sensitive arrangements, with an overall grey mood to the tracks. It's really on the same par of excellence as the previous Talk Talk albums.
    R.I.P. Mark Hollis

Since I heard Spirit of Eden before Laughing Stock, I have always enjoyed Spirit of Eden more. It could be because I’ve listened to it a hundred times more, but it’s interesting that you prefer the other more. I guess I’ll have to listen to Laughing Stock more.

In the Spirit of Eden vs Laughing Stock debate Spirit of Eden gets my vote. Basically because i had been listening to it for best part of 2 years before hearing the other. So Laughing Stock lost out on the "getting hit repeatedly in the head with a brick of pure musical genius" effect that I got with Spirit. Spirit moved me in a way that no other album has before or since. Whereas Laughing Stock felt like a continuation of the same genius but without the feeling of revelation and shock at discovering something so fantastic.

Honestly, even if I don't think you'll love them (at least not initially), I'd recommend the first two albums of Talk Talk, The Party's Over and It's My Life. One interesting thing about the band is that there's a clear progression of their sound in each album. Even so, there is a sense of experimentation as early as their first album. You'd be surprised. And as others have said, their third album, The Colour Of Spring, is a great middle ground between the generally more radio friendly new wave of the first two albums and the avant garde soundscapes of the last two.

I was one of the two that voted for Future Days in the poll, and it is my favourite can album with some margin, but I can definitely see an argument for a more chronological listen. Future Days is also their most subtle album, and some of it's elements might be better appreciated after listening through their earlier discography.

I know this is usually classified as "post-rock", but to me, the term "ambient rock" would actually be more accurate - even though that genre term doesn't even seem to exist. John Martyn's "One World" (the track "Small Hours" in particular) and Radiohead's "King of Limbs" would be other examples for this. And while none of them sound alike (but then again, nor do any of those bands labeled as "post-rock"), they all use ambient textures while still maintaining rock elements (i.e. guitars). IMO, just putting the prefix "post" before anything is a kind of a lazy-ass, non-descript catch-all term, but that's just me.

I would recommend reacting to Buckethead’s album, Colma. I think you would find it enthralling. It is largely comprised of deep reverb classical guitar (with some electric), set to bass and drums, and accompanied by ambient/electronic sounds. It might be the most relaxing, serene album that I’ve ever heard. Besides Jeff Buckley, no one writes more beautiful, tranquil music than Buckethead. I think you would be pleasantly surprised by this album, given his bizarre persona, which precluded me from initially taking him seriously, and making me refuse to even give his music a listen - despite knowing about him for six years - until an online friend, who I was trying to turn on to Buckley, convinced me otherwise.
Most of the album is tinged with melancholy, as he wrote it for his mother, while she was in the hospital, receiving treatment for cancer. He pays lovely tributes to his parents in the tracks, For Mom, and Watching The Boats With My Dad. I think you would especially like the songs, Ghost, Whitewash, and Hills of Eternity. The entire album is incredible, imaginative, and full of optimism. I can see you going back to it regularly. When I first purchased it, I must have played it, while lying in bed each night, for two or three months, straight. Here is a rare, live sample of probably my favourite track on the album, Ghost. The 2:15-3:30 mark is one of those emphemeral moments where the veil between heaven and earth is pulled back, and God gives us a glimpse of His domain.
