    I wouldn't say one should never use Windows Movie Maker... I got started on that program and it's what got me motivated to get better software and realize my passion for editing.
    So in a sense if I had listened to you it would be a paradox, because without WMM I probably wouldn't be into movie making, and therefore wouldn't have watched your video, but then I'd have used WMM and... yeah.

      It's better to start on Movie Maker than it is to do no editing at all.... ya gotta start somewhere lol

    Excellent video, very informative. I love using Final Cut myself, and I couldn't help but wonder how on earth movies were compiled back then!

    All these names should be given Honorary Oscars and Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They were the pioneers of film and allowed such techniques to be created that are still used today.

    Cool video but I would have liked to know how film cutting and pasting actually worked

    I saw a brief clip of studio sound editing from the forties - before magnetic tape - optical film which was sound edited using rows of projector like units running reels of film with only sound - mixed through the analog vacuum tube boards and re-exposed back on to film stock. Hard to find film clips of the process but it was apparently a separate room from the visual editing.

    I came here just when I was watching the Metropolis while wondering how they achieved the effects in that time. Thanks for the video. It was guessable but still nice to see a video about it.

    Life of an American Fireman did not use parallel editing but temporal editing, as we see the final scene twice, once from the inside of the room, then the scene is repeated from start to finish from the outside of the house. Kind of like when the space capsule in A Trip to the Moon crashes into the man in the moon's eye, then a few seconds later lands on the moon's surface.

      they made cards that got filmed. That is actually how Alfred Hitchcock started out, as a title card designer

    Magnetic tape was invented in Germany in the 1930s by I.G.Farben - later known as BASF - and not Ampex.

      +James Royce-Dawson I googled Avid and the version they use to edit movies is $80,000.

    • @JamesRoyceDawson
      @JamesRoyceDawson  8 років тому +1

      Chase Weeks You can by it from their site for $1299, so I'm not sure where you're getting $80,000, but it is still quite expensive. cost of doing business in the film industry. If you want a full editing studio with all the equipment to properly make use of Avid, then $80,000 would probably be about right.

    How did you put the video on the screen of the theater?? please tell me.

    • @JamesRoyceDawson
      @JamesRoyceDawson  10 років тому +1

      Sure, it's actually pretty simple. I took the video of the train, resized it, then used the skew tool so that the corners of the video matched up to the corners of the screen, making it look like it was playing on it. (All in final cut x, in case you were wondering)

    The 1878 film was NOT edited. Not all of us are morons....if u guessed I'm not subscribing...you'll be correct

    • @JamesRoyceDawson
      @JamesRoyceDawson  2 роки тому

      You do you, man. This was a film school project from six years ago where I wanted to give some context to editing. Arranging images when you have to do it manually could be considered editing, but it’s ok if you don’t agree with that. Not sure why it would bother you enough to comment that angrily though.

    • @oobrocks

      U ought to be accurate...some of us aren't versed in film and will be fooled

      @@oobrocks you’re acting like this was a historical or mathematical statement where there’s a categorical answer. What I said has a reasonable logic to it. You don’t have to agree with my interpretation but I’m not “fooling” anyone by saying what I said.
