The catch was amazing...but the throw was sublime.
Exactly not enough mention was ever given to that throw!
Mays said after the fact that he didn’t care about catching the ball in the moment as much as he cared about getting the ball back in. The entire time he was tracking it down he said he was focused on the throw.
I never would have guessed that. That's an amazing fact that shows how great he was.
Criminal that the OTHER half of the CATCH (ie - the THROW) gets forgotten.
Willie was, is, and always be the best.
An icon. R.i.p Willie
Let’s talk about that throw back to second that held the runner that had to tag up.
So incredible!
Amazing throw after that amazing catch. Say Hey Kid double the amazement!
No need to over analyze it , the man had God given talent plain and simple. Some are born with it some aint........RIP Willie Mays the best of the best............Godspeed
Absolutely fantastic breakdown of "the catch." I enjoyed the heck out of this analysis. I know we've got to tip our hat to Mantle, DiMaggio, Cobb and Griffey, Jr., but Mays would be my pick for best center fielder of all time. And he's always in the conversation as best player, too. Kind of like the Jerry Rice of baseball. RIP, big man.
Griffey probably could've made that catch.
I will never forget you Mr. Mays ❤❤
One of the all-time greatest players ❤.
RIP to the Say Hey Kid Willie Mays 😢💔🕊️🌹🙏🏼.
Willie Mays
Gone But Not Forgotten
Amazing throw after that amazing catch. Say Hey Kid double the amazement!
wow my first time seeing this, I always hear of the name willie mays but never gave it a any attention, rip willie mays that was a great catch and made me smile.
RIP To a LEGEND of the game⚾️🫡
A GIANT among men.
Rest in peace Willie Mays baseball ⚾️ legend
In real time it’s all muscle memory. He has done it and knows what he needs to do to make it happen.amazing HUMAN DOING
What a tremendous mind to compute everything to make that catch and throw. That's why I say the brain is really better than a computer. Does it naturally as fast with complicated stuff. Imagine trying to program a computer to do that I don't think that'll ever happen.
By today's modern ball parks measurements and field size, Wertz hits a homerun. RIP Willie
This is absolute perfection
RIP Willie Mays
Best overall player ever. Did it all better than everyone else
Ummm the throw back to second was even more fantastic and not mentioned. You rubes!
In 7th grade I made a catch just like that. Back to the infield and running as fast as I could, left arm extended. The ball fell right into my glove. Got lucky.
R.I.P Willie 🐐👋🏾
Every time I see this clip, it always has the two guys in astonishment at 0:15. I really doubt back in 1954, the TV producer would cut away from Willie’s catch (& throw), that quickly, & happened upon these two guys reacting( ~5 seconds later) to the catch, like that. (that’s gotta be artificially inserted, and not part of the original TV/film footage)
LOL to the fans who were blocked by that high wall from seeing the most historical catch ever made.
One of many, many amazing plays Mays made in his career. Saw him lift a ball off the top of the grass in a blooper flyball to center in one his last games, 99.9% of CF would've let it drop in for a single, not Willie!
RIP King. Legend.
That ball in easily a home run today
🐐 👋🏾
REST UP GOAT
And he held the runner
The 5 tool legend
Rip 🐐💪🏿🫡
Imagine if he missed it. Yet he didnt
Where’s the catch probability on this
Ok, that was way over analyzed
Can someone explain how this is one of greatest catches ?
because of the difficulty of the play, its importance in the game, and the importance of the game itself.
What, you think the Yankees and Bonds have better?
I'm kinda disappointed with this break down of the play, because as fantastic as the catch was, the THROW back in to try to hold the runner was the most impressive aspect of the entire play, with the speed and strength exerted to get it back to the infield
Meh, I just UA-camd over the shoulder catches. RIP Say Hey.
Jim Edmonds had an even tougher catch I believe that was like that.
He faked the catch.
