Have absolutely never understood why Europeans don't put screens on their windows and doors, ESPECIALLY because they don't use air conditioning. Their windows are open all the time and in come all the flies, mosquitoes and on and on. Makes absolutely no sense. It's old, old, technology, probably 100 years old. Same goes for a flag on a mailbox. It's cheap, cheap, cheap, and doesn't entail all these conversations with the post office to come and pick up some mail. Or put out mail boxes the way we have all over the place. It's just about making life more convenient and comfortable.

It boggles the mind. They open windows so much more than most Americans. Most Europe style windows can cheaply be adapted to use a screen and yet they seem to have never thought of it. The USA has had screens as a standard since the 50s.

That house is an upper middle class house. I would have said middle class but the fact it’s located on a lake makes it pricier. The kitchen and open layout of the house is very similar to my house and I would consider our family middle class.

This might be like my grandparents' house. They bought the land 85 years ago when lakefront land was cheap and then built their house. I would consider my grandparents lower middle class. I am probably upper middle class and could not afford to buy their house today. This house looks like a lakefront house from the 1940's or 1950's that has been nicely renovated. Being on the lakefront, it might now be one of the more expensive houses in town.

What an eye opener! As a US senior citizen, I've grown up with window screens, mailbox flags, and garbage disposals, and have just taken them for granted. In other countries, I've only stayed in apartments or hotels, so I never questioned their absence. You're right that the house being shown was not really typical for people of average income, though it varies by region. I also doubt that most people have as many televisions or cars as that household. I'm pretty solidly middle class, and I've never had more than one TV in the house, or more than one vehicle per adult.
As to Golden Retrievers, yup, they're generally great with kids and cats. But be careful about checking the background of purebred dogs - they can have genetic health issues. My own Golden died quite young of cancer.
After decades of fostering dogs, cats, and children, my best "nanny dogs" have been big old mutts. Give them lots of love and they'll for sure return it to everyone around them

As an older American I live in a house that was built in 1940. Middle class neighborhood. All houses in my area have always had screens on all windows that open, and screen doors between the main door and outside. I had to replace those 1940 windows with new double pane windows that are better insulated. Those windows came with screens as part of the installation. My parents house built in 1880 in a small town also has screens everywhere.
TV’s prior to my going to college in 1965? We had two. Now I have three, plus 5 computers for myself and my housemate. Neither of us work from home.
As a child I had a dog a cat or two, a budgie, snake (he was a catch from the local stream and not happy) and a wild caught chipmunk.

Window screens are very common and a/c, however touch facets, multi - functioning refrigerator, electric recliners, and garbage dispenser are upper middle class right now. We do love ice. That wasn't a rich faucet, it has a tiny handle on the side. I have the same one and got it for $80 on Amazon. I hate garbage disposals and never use mine, but even in the cheapest apartments back in college, we had them. My daughter lives in a dorm that's 60 years old, and they have 1 in their tiny kitchen. The electric recliners have been around forever. They also aren't very expensive. My son bought 1 his Jr year of college and he was working part time at a chili's. The fridge was just a basic French door fridge. It wasn't one of the expensive smart fridges. We have 2, 1 came with the house and we bought the other off FB Marketplace for $600. For TVs in our area you usually have 1 in every common room, 1 in every bedroom, and if you have a covered porch 1 outside. I grew up poor but we still had a TV in the living room and in each bedroom. The bedroom tvs were small but still there. We do live in an affluent area now but most people only have 1 extra car. We used to have a convertible for fun. It got old fast and we gave it to our daughter. Now we are looking to buy an older truck for Home depot and Lowes runs.

The stereotypical mailbox is a rural mailbox; what were on farms. They hung out this way so the postal carrier could put in your mail without getting out of the vehicle (mail vehicles are right-hand-drive to make this easier). The US Mail is a service, not unlike military service or the public health service, it is in the constitution that it is to be provided to all homes in the US. Without this mail service, the US would not have expanded as it did (you could literally mail houses or children through USPS)

Golden Retrievers are the best dogs. Windows in the US open by sliding them up and close by sliding them down. That makes it possible to have a screen and still open the window. If your windows open by being pushed out toward the side of the house they can't be opened if you have our type of screen. This is most likely a middle-class home. They have a great life, but it isn't a rich home - unless this is close to a major city. This looks and feels like a middle-class home in a nice suburban area. A very nice place to raise a family. The openess in the yards is actually a good thing as the children are likely to play with neighboring children - and mom's and dad's can keep an eye on the kids.

@ARISUinW0NDERLAND I think it just depends on the region. I live in the suburbs of Nashville, and this would be considered an average middle class home. However, the same house inside the Nashville city limits works be considered an upper middle class home as the housing prices inside the city limits are 3 to 4x more than the same home in a surrounding county. In some areas of Nashville this would be over $1M. But the same house is a surrounding county only half an hour from downtown would only be $300-$400k. From my understanding, most of the Midwest is even cheaper.

When we lived in Germany I was astonished that the home we lived in did not have window screens. We had the windows open so much and had to deal with flies coming in all of the time! Why? Why no screens? This is a cultural thing to have the windows open for at least a small amount of time year round, and since there is no air conditioning, it is necessary in the summer to keep windows open for ventilation.
Ugh! Up to 5 flies buzzing around in our great room drove me absolutely nuts!

Pretty much everyone has window screens of some sort. I open my windows a lot during the Spring and Autumn when the temperatures are reasonable. I have one car-it’s the one I drive everywhere. I don’t have a fancy faucet like that one and I have a double sink that adds up to about the same space as her big one. I have an ice maker-one of my favorite things, along with my dishwasher. When I moved into this house, there was a refrigerator/freezer that had an external ice and water dispenser. I am enjoying that! Now, to disappoint you…I have one television and it hasn’t been turned on in six years. I can’t afford broadband internet and/or cable vision. I watch UA-cam and I read. I read a LOT! I had a small portable B&W TV, that I sometimes lugged around until the 1985 or so. When I was young if someone was having a sleepover, and I had an adult to drive me back and forth (and help me carry it!!), I was asked to bring it so we could lock ourselves away from the adults. My dad had had to move out of state for a project the aerospace company he worked for was designing. He'd only needed it for six months and never used it again. That is pretty much a middle class house here (not a rich person’s home). My home has three levels. I currently have six TV’s. One in every bedroom, one in the den off the kitchen, one in the living room and I had one in the Master bathroom but I had it removed because my husband couldn’t get out of the bathroom in the morning watching CNN. He was late every day. The reason people fence in their yards vary. Some do because they have pets. Some do for privacy. You don’t want perfect strangers watching you lounge around in your backyard. And then there is an old saying “ Fences make good neighbors “. As for the mailboxes, my mailbox is attached to my house, as most are in the city. The type of mailboxes you’re seeing are mostly in suburban homes. I don’t have to use a flag, I just put outgoing mail in my mailbox and the postman picks them up when he drops off my mail.

It is my understanding that European homes have rcd (Residential Current Device) serves the same function but covers the entire home. In the us each electrical socket equipped with gfci is only braking its conection to the rest of the home. Window screens are great - especially in spring and fall. I was born I'm 1965. My parents bought their first house in 1965 for $35,000, we had 2 cars(one for my dad to go to work, my mom had one to take my sister and I to doctor's appointments, school, the grocery store, amongst other places. In New Mexico we had swamp coolers because it's not as humid as the west coast, east coast, or the southern states that are right by the Gulf Of Mexico. We are in the Southwest so it can get very hot sometimes around 110! The screen in the window let's air in, but keeps the bugs out especially: flies, mosquitoes, bees, wasps, most spiders, grasshoppers, etc. extremely important to have. From 1965 to 1987 we had 2 tv's (one in the den or family room, and 1 in my parents room.) In 1987 when I moved out on my own I only had 1. 6 tv's is a bit excessive, but it depends on the size of the house, how many children you have. My parents have had bigger houses since my sister and I moved out, but we're not excessive maybe a maximum of 3. The garbage disposal is very important because the more food you put in a trash can start to stink or attract bugs. You also don't put just any food down the disposal and you don't put giant pieces of food down it either, from 1965 to the present there have always been garbage disposal's. Ice is a big thing( yes we know it dilutes drinks), but it helps things to stay cold, and if you have an injury of some kind to keep the swelling down you can put ice cubes in a baggie, also I'm probably not the exception, but I like to chew on ice.
