Don't sell yourself short. The video was a joy to watch, and the result speaks for yourself. That table will bring comfort and satisfaction to you and your family for years!
As someone who is often doing projects without all the proper tools I feel your pain. The table and bench turned out great, and now it has a story to go with it.
That table turned out so well! As someone who gets easily discouraged by mistakes and setbacks, I found the video genuinely inspiring! Mad props for your perseverance! I think I would have cried multiple times. 😅
I cannot tell you how many times I've had to rip out seams, toss batter, and unravel and reknit. You are learning, honing skills and appreciate good craft work. FYI I think the table looks great. I love how the table flows with the shelve, that's impressive.
I can hear people saying “love your dining table, where did you buy it?” You made a beautiful unique piece of furniture for your family’s day to day life that I’m sure it will be passed down for generations, money can’t buy that 🙌
" Because I don't have a Jointer.... " Good lord, how many hours a decent Jointer can save me. If only my father has the mindset to not force his tool beyond it's recommended usage, we might have a Jointer and a Bandsaw instead of three dead Hand Planer, one dead cicular saw, one burned out cordless hand drill ( old model, without any spareparts available anymore ) and one cracked hand grinder. Anyway, ranting aside. The table turned out great !. Great job, Jaya !
Your bespoke furniture fits the space well. I personally think practical videos like this, ones that show someone applying what they've learned from others, are an important intermediary step between absolute beginner and master craftsman - your video is realistic and counteracts the hard to obtain perfection we see on pro and semi-pro woodworking channels. It's actually super inspiring to see, so thanks!
No worries, glad you liked the vid. Since I’m no master carpenter thought it would be more interesting to show the struggles of a regular DIYer trying to make nice furniture.
Lovely table! It is so nice how it matches the floor. Super fit as well! My stomach turned and I felt your pain several times watching the video. Thanks for persevering - it was all worth it in the end!
Glad you could use my method of joining long boards with the tracksaw. My heart sank when you had your router mishap. I think I would have thrown a tool or two.
Nice work, Jaya. Your carpentry skills have gotten quite impressive over the last few years. And once again, I’m surprised by just how many similarities there are between our two houses. Your dining room table (along with the room decor) looks a lot like ours…right down to the posts you had to fit it between. In contrast though, we cut a notch into the end of ours so it actually fits around the post. (My idea. Surprised my wife went for it.) The other major difference is… that we got our carpenter to make it for us. So again, I’m impressed by your skills. お疲れさまでした! 🍻
@@W4iteFlame You CAN actually detach it from the post, but it’s a bit of a pain, so the table usually stays where it is. (It is kind of a unique design… maybe I’ll show it off in a future upload? 😆)
I'm here to say I like the table. I know you had a care factor factor going on, but tables are hard. I like the floating table top effect. I have a very large Tasmanian blackwood table made by my father (3 m x 1.5 m) nearly 40 years ago. It was influenced by the brutalist archicture of the time and I have always loved it. It is super solid and needs at least 3 people to even lift it. It was built as the "everyday table", but it doubles as my desk and dining table. The great thing is that the "mistakes" made by my father make me feel close to him 40 years later. Revel in your learning experience!
Thank you, yes, I probably could have made a more simple table for my first attempt, but now that it's done I'm happy with it, have learnt a lot and look forward to making another one, one day.
@@TokyoLlama Lol, exactly, one day.... 😁 (and you probably will). Btw, I forgot to say earlier you all huddled around the old table for Christmas was very funny. Your wife was barely squeezed in! 😂

The end result is just perfect. So handy to have those little shelves right there as well. Well done, and forget about the slip ups. No one will notice or care during the years of use you will get. Seeing you all huddled around the tiny table made me smile.

It just makes people happy and tickles the DIY spirit! I never get tired of watching your videos, funnily enough haha.
Thanks, yes, I tried to use screws as little as possible. The only metal is for the screws and threads holding the tabletop to the frame but I figured since Ishitani did it like that, it was alright!
Ishitani - GREAT inspiration. I assume by now you have discovered that the problem with the router is the bit collar loosening on you and allowing the bit to slip. Give it a good cleaning to get rid of the sap and other flotsam clogging the router collet and the bit shank. Then stop occasionally to reassure that the collet is still tight on the bit. I assumed that you would resort to using hand planes to do most of your smoothing. Surprise - you didn't. Using hand planes to do reduction of major warps and cupping can speed the thicknessing process. Glad to see you back on UA-cam.
Thanks, yes, I didn't realise that the flotsam and jetsam in the collar would have such a big effect as I made sure it was tight before using. Lesson learned (after making the same mistake twice...) I've been watching you from the beginning of your house renovation and I can relate to so many things. I appreciate your videos and the fact that you don't gloss over the mistakes. I think you have done a fantastic job on the house, and I really like your other videos about Japan and various rabbit holes. Please keep it up.
The best thing about it is you made it to fit and match the house and your family. The light hits the wood matching the rest of the kitchen perfectly. The design is very neat!
The table turned out beautifully, and the wood grains are gorgeous. What I liked the most was that you used materials you already had on hand before deciding that you needed to buy a bit more to finish the project. "If at first you don't succeed, try try again". Making mistakes is all part of learning, and your woodworking skills are showing more and more improvement. Keep it up!!!
Thank you. This came just in time. My wife asked me to make all the kitchen cabinets match the new ones we purchased last year. I am cutting, gluing, and clamping the first (of 14) door. I don't know when my router "event" will happen, but your video gave me a chance to calm down. Thank you again.
It’s so great to see a new video from you. I love your attitude. So you made some mistake! You learn from those. Don’t be a stranger. Looking forward to more.
Love the entire series. I admire the skill and patience to get these skills in the first place. I‘m the kind of guy that would spend huge amounts to pay other people to do it for me.
Looks great. You probably feel good when you sit down at the table because you know how much work you put into it, even though its not exactly what you wanted. Thanks for sharing.
Good day. I love it and enjoy it as well. I myself watched a lot of UA-cam videos and I am put back then. I love to see organic videos and I learn more from you than the high tech and sanitized one. Please put more like this 🙏

@@TokyoLlama Hello again, my husband told me a true craftsman doesn’t give up, doesn’t quit. You, my friend, didn’t give up, didn’t quit. You made an heirloom table for your family. You Are a true craftsman!🤗. Love and hugs from sunny Arizona💖😎💖
Before I watched 5 min in I already knew you were selling yourself short. Your craftsmanship far exceeds anything what you think you don’t know. Looks stunnning
That table is beautiful, have watched every video since the beginning. I don’t know anything about reno work but watching your videos is so enjoyable and calming.
La mesa quedó hermosa. No importa si hubo errores, le sirvieron a usted para aprender, lo que los convierte en algo sumamente útil. Felicidades, great work!
Hi Tokyo Llama, I have been a wood working hobbyist myself for 7 years and have had similar troubles with my routers. My problems were caused by the collet and bit shank being different sizes. In one case I had a 1/2" collet and a 12mm shank bit. On my palm router I had the original collet that was always too tight. I ordered a new 1/4" collet and it fixed the problem. Collets can be ordered in imperial or metric and are inter-changeable. Love your videos!
Thanks! I have both the 1/2" and 12mm collets, so that wasn't the problem, but others have pointed out that dust in the collet was likely the main cause.
It's good to see another one of your videos, the table turned out excellent! And well done on exceeding the limitations of your tools, it shows what can be made with someone creative thinking and determination!
That is a Grand job well done. when things go a little bit wrong the best craftsmen/women gloss over the bad bits for the perfect looking results. Not that anything you have produced has ever been bad I hasten to add.
Well done! With those kind of setbacks and than to still persevere is impressive to say the least. The table looks great and you should be proud of what you achieved, and appreciate the learnings you acquired along the way.
The table is beautiful! I have a few items that my grandfather made that mean the world to me because he made them. I know that if a master craftsman was to look them over they would find lots of mistakes but that is the part that makes them special. My grandfather was a farmer that raised pigs and beef cattle he had a wood shop for his hobby and he made items for loved ones. That is the best part I was a loved one! One day the table will be there when you are gone and your child or grandchild will remember that you made it because you loved your wife and that will mean something to them.
I think your table looks great! We all learn from our mistakes and you triumphed in the end. Keep up the good work. I love the channel. You are living my dream. I live in the US but would love to live in Japan and restore an old farm house. Take care
If for some reason I want to watch more !? You bet I Do ! But seriously : I understand why you can be frustrated when your build doesn't go as you planned, but the process as much as the result are great! I wish I was even a tenth as efficient as you are !
It took awhile but you’ve made a table you and your children and grandchildren can be proud of! Love anytime your videos hit! First thing I do is share them to everyone, their mother and their mother’s duck.
Its always a ride when working without a planer or jointer^^ I will definitely use the trick with the track saw on my next projects. The table and bench turned out great in the end!
Hi Jaya , I have wondered where you were and how the house was progressing. I assumed you needed a job to save up for more renovations. The table looked awesome, and I was impressed how you built the sled to solve the problem of planning. Hopefully we will see you renovating and building furniture more frequently, your carpentry and plastering skills have developed remarkably.
I really enjoyed this ! My Grandfather had a work shop and made the majority of cabinets tables and furniture for hin and Grandmas house . It was really nice ! The real stuff ! Been on the look out for you I hope you will make more videos 1🙂
The floating table top is a fantastic design feature on this piece. Awesome work. One thing is the knotty boards stand out. Something to think about is laminating the top with an interesting natural wood. Maybe a cherry or maple. That might be a super contrast to all the cyprus in the kitchen. Lovely work as is to be sure.
Great work on the table. It looks really good. Things happen, but who cares. No body is going to know. Well, except we who watched the video. But without the correct tools, it looks really good! Great work.
Good for you! I love the way you're not afraid to tackle new challenges. I am also a subscriber to Ishitani Furniture. I am in awe of that kind of craftsmanship. I love your router sled solution to flattening the cypress boards, but wow that must have been time consuming! Time to make friends with someone who has a full woodworking shop, perhaps? It was quite the journey for you, but I love the result. A simple, elegant table (not to mention a wealth of woodworking experience!) Thank you for sharing this long and winding road with us. I enjoyed every part, even the "DOH!" moments!
No worries, thanks for watching. Yes, the router sled took a long time, and combined with the risk of mistakes, I think I'll leave it for when it's really necessary. Funnily, I passed a carpenter's workshop not so far from my house that had big windows. I saw a big planer in there, so I stopped by and said hello. He seemed friendly, maybe I'll ask him next time.
@@TokyoLlama always good to be optimistic, but it’s just possible that it may be misplaced regarding the grand final, but I can say they have opened the round with an abundance of positivity and enthusiasm overlaid with some finely tuned entertainments. The red and black jacket of course!
Good job pushing through and working around the mistakes. You probably learned a lot of things you otherwise wouldn't have if you had a jointer and planer. And it turned out well also. The difference between a journeyman and a rookie is the journeyman knows how to fix his mistakes.
Don't sell yourself short. The video was a joy to watch, and the result speaks for yourself. That table will bring comfort and satisfaction to you and your family for years!

I've been watching you from the beginning of your house renovation and I can relate to so many things. I appreciate your videos and the fact that you don't gloss over the mistakes. I think you have done a fantastic job on the house, and I really like your other videos about Japan and various rabbit holes. Please keep it up.
❤ love the table. Great job and of course, stuff happens. You did excellent on tackling it. Cheers!
Thanks Victoria!
It is always therapeutic to watch you do your craft, especially when done methodically.
🙏
The best thing about it is you made it to fit and match the house and your family. The light hits the wood matching the rest of the kitchen perfectly. The design is very neat!
Thanks very much!
Good luck, mistakes are going to happen but in the end you'll get there!
It’s so great to see a new video from you. I love your attitude. So you made some mistake! You learn from those. Don’t be a stranger. Looking forward to more.
Thank you, working on the next videos!
It's gorgeous! You did it with a few tools short, and still have all your fingers - major win
Ha ha, that's the most important thing!
Love the entire series. I admire the skill and patience to get these skills in the first place. I‘m the kind of guy that would spend huge amounts to pay other people to do it for me.
That’s a fair enough thing to do - given the time spent doing this you have to enjoy it for it to be worth it I think.
Looks great. You probably feel good when you sit down at the table because you know how much work you put into it, even though its not exactly what you wanted. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, have to admit I'm proud of it, even if not perfect.
It's joyful that you never give up! It turned out to be very nice, use it with lots of happiness!
Thank you!
Always a great time seeing you do crafts...Your whole house is a craft project!
Ha ha, that's right!
Superb. I don’t know whether I like the table or the video work more.
These videos are always a treat.
Thanks so much! 🙏
Good day. I love it and enjoy it as well. I myself watched a lot of UA-cam videos and I am put back then. I love to see organic videos and I learn more from you than the high tech and sanitized one. Please put more like this 🙏
Wow that has turned out beautifully! It looks as though it was part of the kitchen installation, it fits perfectly 😊
Thanks very much!
Esta increible tú casa. Definitivamente tienes mis respetos. Eres un grandisimo diseñador, un saludo!
Muchas gracias! Saludos desde Japón 🇯🇵
You are an amazing guy! Hardworking like no one. Thank you for sharing your videos. The table is beautiful. Congratulations. Enjoy.❤
Thank you very much!
Thank you for showing all the ups and downs. I am learning so much right along with you. I feel like everyone of your struggles is my struggle and everyone of your victories, mine as well. Gives me courage and hope to carry on. Shed a few tears myself today when the simplest of tasks, turned out to be another problem bigger than it should have been. It's good to be reminded to carry on. Thank you for that. 💙
However you got there...it looks beautiful in that gorgeous kitchen. Wow.
You are definitely not the unskilled laborer. Over time you have proved yourself to be anything but. The home, table and landscape are beautiful! Hugs from sunny Arizona 💖😎💖
Thanks very much, still a little unskilled but learning!
It's a BEAUTIFUL table, and you learn a lot. 😊❤❤
Before I watched 5 min in I already knew you were selling yourself short. Your craftsmanship far exceeds anything what you think you don’t know. Looks stunnning
Thanks so much!
That table is beautiful, have watched every video since the beginning. I don’t know anything about reno work but watching your videos is so enjoyable and calming.
Thanks so much, glad you like them!
La mesa quedó hermosa. No importa si hubo errores, le sirvieron a usted para aprender, lo que los convierte en algo sumamente útil. Felicidades, great work!
Muchas gracias, saludos!
I really enjoy your content. Wish there was more of it.
I hope all is well with your and your family.
Hi Tokyo Llama,
I have been a wood working hobbyist myself for 7 years and have had similar troubles with my routers.
Thank you!
That is a Grand job well done. when things go a little bit wrong the best craftsmen/women gloss over the bad bits for the perfect looking results. Not that anything you have produced has ever been bad I hasten to add.
I have been a subscriber to Ishitani Furniture for years! So lovely to see cross-pollination of ideas across the channels I follow :)
I've been an Ishitani fan for years too - part of my inspiration to try woodworking.
That’s a really beautiful way of putting it, thank you.
@@TokyoLlama I have a couple lamp holders for oil lamps and a shelf that holds keepsakes that he made. They are extremely special.
I think your table looks great! We all learn from our mistakes and you triumphed in the end. Keep up the good work. I love the channel. You are living my dream. I live in the US but would love to live in Japan and restore an old farm house. Take care
Ace table. Soooo good. Awesome. Love the tip re prefect joining edges using the track saw.
Thanks Merv!
If for some reason I want to watch more !? You bet I Do !
But seriously : I understand why you can be frustrated when your build doesn't go as you planned, but the process as much as the result are great! I wish I was even a tenth as efficient as you are !
Thank you, there's a lot that editing hides, as if I really showed everything the video would go on for hours!
Again, I enjoy your steady narration and confidence to go through with a project. You do work and have a lovely home.
Thanks very much!
Wow what an elegant table! The effort certainly paid off. Heading over the watch the bench video now.
Thanks a lot!
Kudos to you for continuing with this project. It must have been very frustrating BUT the end result is so beautiful. Congrats 👏😀
Thank you so much!
It took awhile but you’ve made a table you and your children and grandchildren can be proud of! Love anytime your videos hit! First thing I do is share them to everyone, their mother and their mother’s duck.
Thanks so much!
It turned out so well, it looks beautiful !
I will in fact be heading over to the second channel to see more, thank you very much lol
The table looks fantastic.
Thank you!
The table and bench BELONG THERE 👍👍👍
Thanks, happy with the way they look in the room.
Looks absolutely stunning. The hard work payed off big time
Thanks, yeah, I’m glad I did it.
Its always a ride when working without a planer or jointer^^ I will definitely use the trick with the track saw on my next projects. The table and bench turned out great in the end!
Definitely a ride! Check out the link from Walnut Workshop in the description for the video I learnt the technique from as he shows it much better.
Let the timber dry & rest is a great 👍 thing before starting. Well done.
Thank you!
I do want to see more. You have done a wonderful job. It is a beautiful table its imperfections make it unique. Congratulations and a hug from Spain.
Thank you, greetings from Ibaraki!
Kuddos for getting to the end, well done sir, no matters the errors and imperfections for this your table and you really should be proud of it!
Thanks, yes, it's satisfying now but was frustrating at the time.
such a cool design
Yes, I loved it when I saw it in Ishitani's video.
Thanks, yes, need to pay for the new windows somehow... More videos and projects in the works.
I really enjoyed this ! My Grandfather had a work shop and made the majority of cabinets tables and furniture for hin and Grandmas house . It was really nice ! The real stuff ! Been on the look out for you I hope you will make more videos 1🙂
It turned out beautiful! seriously impressive.
Beautiful table Jaya well done man.
Thanks mate!
Very nicely done on the table. It’s beautiful 👌🙏🥰
Great work.
Thanks very much!
A simple, elegant table (not to mention a wealth of woodworking experience!)
Thank you for sharing this long and winding road with us.
Maddening, but even experts have disasters, a lot of creativity comes from fixing the mistakes 😄
That's right, it's frustrating but good learning process.
This table is gorgeous.
A perfect fit for your family
Thank you!
Sweet table and jacket\ jumper thingy. I’m a little bit in love with the Bombers this season too, had a magnificent start.
The brown jacket or the red and black checkered fleece? Bombers looking good! Should I book my flights for the grand final yet?
@@TokyoLlama always good to be optimistic, but it’s just possible that it may be misplaced regarding the grand final, but I can say they have opened the round with an abundance of positivity and enthusiasm overlaid with some finely tuned entertainments. The red and black jacket of course!
@@rossmcleod7983 Fair enough, I'll wait till see if they win this weekend before I book tickets 😁
It's a great table and it will be there next time you have guests along with a story.
Thanks, yes, that's very true.
Always a lovely time watching your work! Congrats on the feature in the NYTimes as well! It's been so fun to watch you lovingly renovate your akiya!
Good job pushing through and working around the mistakes. You probably learned a lot of things you otherwise wouldn't have if you had a jointer and planer. And it turned out well also.
The difference between a journeyman and a rookie is the journeyman knows how to fix his mistakes.
You're absolutely correct. And if I do get a planer down the track I'll appreciate it's value more, too.
