Though the word "anecdotes" now commonly means "short, amusing stories," its original sense was of a "secret history." In the opposite trajectory, Tarot has transformed from an amusing card game to a supposed container for secret histories of its own. The pictures themselves are anecdotal - narrative miniatures - and like pieces of music, they hold moments and memories.
The basis of this deck is Joanna Newsom's music, which like Tarot elicits obsessive diving and pattern-seeking. The narrators of Newsom's songs are archetypal in the same was as the figures of the Tarot trumps. I began in Autumn 2018 with an idle sketch combining Trump IX (Time, or The Hermit) with the song "Soft As Chalk," and other connections gradually revealed themselves. The result is not a literal or definitive interpretation, but my personal response to both the music and the characters of the cards.

Every card in this deck is inspired by a specific lyric, or a song as a whole.
The 22 trumps follow the sequence of our old friend, the Tarot de Marseille. The imagery in all the cards has been inspired by other historic Tarots, such as the Sola Busca deck, the "Mantegna Tarocchi," and the decks of the Etteilla school. The songs of the trumps span the entire discography.
Some depict characters mentioned in songs, such as Monkey (XV) or Colleen (XVII). Others show an imagined narrator of the song. For each, the song has provided a landscape to fit the Tarot character into, whether they are a costumed character of the song or its narrator.
Each of the other four suits is based on one specific album, with added seasonal and elemental themes. The cards are mostly scenic, but do not follow any one model for illustrated cards. The sequence of each suit was chosen by combining the numerical readings of the Tarot with the story of each album, resulting in a hybrid of the two sources.
The suit of Batons is based on the album The Milk-Eyed Mender, set at the end of summer and associated with the element Fire. These cards all focus on arts, crafts, and the natural world.
The suit of Coins is based on Have One On Me, set as autumn turns toward winter and associated with the element Earth. These cards deal with possessions, homelands, and belonging.
The suit of Swords is based on Divers, set at the end of winter and associated with elemental Air. These cards share themes of individualism, remembrance, and intellectual conflicts.
The suit of Cups is based on Ys, set in late spring and early summer and associated with elemental Water. These cards deal with community, family, and passions.

I purchased this deck after "seeing" you mention it during a live. I managed to get the PDF and have been researching the songs. You know I love a story behind the story. The idea of creating a deck based on songs has piqued my interest. Having belly danced (go watch Irina Akulenko dance perform Justice/Adjustment) my way through tarot helped me better understand this tool in "real life". I thoroughly enjoyed this walkthrough.

She seems to have passion for applique 😁The PDF handbook is included in every deck so yes do check it out. Unless you read images only like I sometimes do, then technically, any images can do (Which is why I used DIXIT cards at one point). Have fun!

hah I made the two very silly assumptions that (1) everyone can read my embroidery handwriting (2) everyone is familiar with Joanna Newsom lyrics - for that I apologize! The bag does say “water were your limbs, fire was your hair,” and it is a line from the song “Cosmia,” a really powerful song about the death of a friend. It’s the song with trump XIII but I dressed Knight of Cups up as the Cosmia moth as well, a little tribute to Smith & Waite :-) Thanks for backing the deck! - Yve
Hello! No no no it was not your hand writing, I think it was the colour of the thread against the felt 😁I have no idea who Joanna Newsom is until I backed your deck. I am a fan of another lyricist, BTS (No, not "Dynamite", thanks 😅 That's their only English song. And no, I am not Korean 😁Don't understand a word. When there is will there is a way I suppose. For many it seems). Story tellers are the most powerful musicians in my opinion. So although I have no idea of Joanna Newsom is, I backed it, with the determination to learn all her stories, through yours. Thank you so very much for making my pouch. Both Death and Knight of Cups are important symbols (and stories) for me! I am looking forward to more creations from you, if there will be more 💜
