The Baal Cycle from Ancient Canaanite Mythology

  • This video is a creative production of the story of how Baal became king of the Canaanite pantheon. This myth was discovered on tablets in the ancient Canaanite city of Ugarit in Syria. The translation for this video was used from "Stories From Ancient Canaan" by Michael D. Coogan and Mark S. Smith.
Ancient people did not always leave behind labeled
statues of their gods; therefore, we cannot know exactly
how Baal, El, Asherah, etc. were meant to look.
However, all figures and artifacts in this production
are from Bronze Age and Iron Age Syria and Israel and
therefore offer a fairly good representation of how
the ancient Canaanites saw their world.
This production was created by April Lynn Downey, founder of Phoenix Feather Books & Curios (www.phoenixfeatherbooks.com) and Journals of Tales.

what a beautifully and ethically produced video (all sources carefully cited)! I am just learning about the links between Israeli and Canaanite religions, and I have been surprised by the many comparisons to Hindu mythologies! for example, I was struck by the similarities between Anat and Kali, both with bloodthirsty vengeance and depicted with severed hands attached to a belt around the waist!

This is the way the stories in all types of religious mythology should be treated. That very much holds true for the religions prevalent today, and not just the religious traditions of long ago . These stories are the poetry of the spirit. Taking any such stories as literally true, as prose, robs them of their poetic and spiritual power, and degrades them into dogma.

It's nice to be able to learn about the original Semetic gods prior to the rise of Judaic monotheism. Now, we get to glimpse at Yahweh/El's (Or the god who lead to his development) extended family and lore as seen by the people who initially developed it. Baal gets a lot of hate in the Bible, so seeing him in a non biased light is refreshing.

both Baal and the land of Cannan get a lot of hate in the bible. But why? My assumption was always that Yahweh was originally Yam who was an enemy of the Cannanite pantheon and wanted revenge for being kicked out. Thus Yahweh wanted the gods and the people of Cannan annihilated.

    • @provokingthought9964
      @provokingthought9964 2 роки тому

Cordial, but non apologetic worshiper of Yahweh here :) I would say, Yahweh's extended family is very present in the biblical text. And his rule over them. As well as deep seated interplay and reply against Baal, Ashura, and the other gods which the Bible at no time denies but which Christians ( I cannot speak for the other two abrahamic religions) and non christian folks alike are rarely aware. They blithely mistake the carved image for the god. I do not blame them. Most everyone raised Christian got a readers digest biblical narrative that then further got diluted by lack of comprehension and retention of even the abbreviated narrative. If I could summarize what I got from my upbringing it was God had a people who went bad, and rejected their Messiah and the son of God, Jesus Christ and now we get to be in God's family and not go to hell if we choose him. While that isn't untrue, it's so oversimplified and sanitized.

The Scriptures are written to Israelites from an Israelite perspective. Yahuah...proper make isn't El. Canaanite deities are Hammitic anyway. Shemetic* would indicate from Shem. Anyway, Baal and the others are enemies because they tried/try to usurp the Creator. They are forever enemies. Learn up. Hebrews are/were Henotheistic. You'll learn a lot by actually reading...but then again, the books aren't written to you.

@@LaTaurusHarrison Dude, I don't get what's the hullabaloo, nor do I fully understand the word salad you wrote.
All Im saying is that this helps us understand the god character within the Hebrew and Aramaic scriptures more fully. Or at least understand from which deities he is an amalgamation of. By understanding his original historical context.
Through archeology, genetic and linguistic research (Done by Israeli academics and archeologists) it's generally agreed that historically, the Hebrews were just another faction of the indigenous Canaanite population, which is related to other Semetic peoples of the ancient near east (Akkadian,Arramaic, Chaldean) Consequently, they initially inherited both pantheon and cosmology of their Canaanite forbearers, which was diluted over time due to the rise of monolatry and later monotheism due to exposure to Zoroastrianism after the Babylonian exile.
Throughout the centuries, Hebrew scriptures have been purged of much of it's polytheistic flavor due. So, in my opinion, it's refreshing to see the god of the Bible in his original place within a wider pantheon.
And the fact that "The books weren't written for me" should not deprive myself or anyone of being able to appreciate the historicity of this vid.
Here's a vid on more on the original pantheon.

So, the Canaanite word for "sea" is "yam" (or, "yamm"), so Yam / Sea is his name, but it also literally means "sea". El is the head of the pantheon but "el" also just means "god". Baal is a god, but "baal" also means "master". When I made the video, I thought it would be clearer just to use Sea instead of Yam, but you'll see it both ways, depending on how one wants to translate it.

It's not up for debate lol. The nation Israel comes from the name Israel, it's not like it's a "close match", it's an exact match that is well documented in many many historical records and artifacts.
The name El, meaning God, is found in MANY names. Daniel, Elijah, Elohim, Eloha, Ezekiel, Joel....
El being in Israel's name is not particularly abnormal; it is pretty standard as far as naming conventions go.
There is no deep connection or mystery behind El being in Israel. It's just standard name for the time. Just like the name Johnson has the word Son in it. It's not because the Johnson family has some mysterious hidden history... But rather, that's just a normal name.

The Ethiopic Church still has some elements that both European Churches and Judaism let go, like the book of Enoch, so it could be that elements like these also survived! As for Moloch, he was a version of Baal worshipped in North Africa, and his cult was widely demonized by christians, so it might come from there...

I noticed someone talking about how kundalini in yoga used to be seen as existing above and below the heart, and the objective of early practitioners seemed to be to bring energy down and up to the heart for expression. In modern practice, the guy said, it’s only uncoiled from below toward the head. The relentless upward flow of energy is an impulse toward disembodiment. I read that then in a timely coincidence found out a friend who taught yoga shot herself dead. I don’t the guy talking about the energy flows made the connection I did, but it did remind me of gnostics thinking math and science are just the perfected studies of the inherently flawed matter of the universe. I am agnostic currently studying the bible with a yahweh loving sorta Christian friend. cant even get her to look at this stuff, when u look at akkad, sumer, babylonian, egyptian mythologies all the dots r connected its clear as day where the Abrahamic religions came from. any advice on how to introduce these sources and materials to someone thats deeply religious in a way that they wont immediately dismiss it

Thanks! More is coming so don't forget to subscribe! :) .... as far as your friend goes, I would ask yourself first why you feel she needs to hear about this stuff? I used to believe the Bible was perfect and was a strong Christian. Over the years, my studies have pulled me away from that. I am ok now, but it was a painful process so I am not quick to make anyone else go through that until they are ready. If they are ready to be open minded, then they'll be ready and you'll probably know when conversations come up. If they are not ready, then nothing you can say will really "help", it may only cause bad feelings. I have a strong urge to tell people the things I learn about (for a few reasons) and often have to hold myself back because not everyone needs to go through what I went through and not everyone is ready. However, I would say the best way to breach the subject with your friend is just by telling her things YOU find interesting for you, stuff you are learning about. She can piece together what's important to her beliefs if her curiosity is piqued enough and she feels unthreatened. Make it about YOUR journey, not what you're trying to pull her into. Good luck!

I would say that nine of this needs to be threatening to a Christian either. Even in thw new testament Jesus claims "ye are gods". Christianity was never monotheistic until the councils made by the Roman emperors forced it that way. Also, I feel that a persons Christian faith should be enhanced by the connections to the other faiths around it. If the world really came from Noah, then all the religions should sound similar from the beginning. If they didnt, then my ears would perk up more. Similarity is actually evidence for its possible truthfulness.

@@drewhanna9057 Makes no sense at all, the gods archetype seems to come out of ancient Sumer at least our earliest known gods. All the ancient near east Mediterranean early pantheons appear very similar in my opinion through simple process of converging and diverging ideas they are trying to answer the same questions with primitive understanding of our world hence major similarity yet distinct differences. Personally I side with a sorta mixed fragmentary and documentary hypothesis throw in some folk tales n poems, ideas and theologies converging and diverging Judaism is born. Then take Judaism add heavy Hellenistic influences wrap it up in mysticism/Gnosticism u get early Christianity. The theology and cannon is hammered out over 21 ecumenical councils, most famous being 1st council of Nicaea which focused most on Arianism vs trinitarianism. Along comes the enlightenment era more and more people wake up to absurdity of religious traditions theologies, Science logos and reason are the real truth that sets u free from religious dogma and allows humanity to come to together instead of fragmenting into innumerable sects and religions all in competition with each other

@@manbearpig3507 it makes more sense if its not on a quick youtube comment. But if the bible is at all accurate about some of the miraculous events, if everyone at the tower of Babel was so united that even God himself said that he had to smite their language or they could reach into heaven, then you would come out with a bunch of very similar groups that have completely differing language that gets more diverse over time and distance from the epicenter. What I am saying and what you are saying both make sense, just from a different paradigm. My point is that if you choose to not believe in God, these things are evidence against Christianity, but if you choose to believe, it is evidence for it.

I think that's changed slightly. Before, mysticism was the most logical answer to how the the world works and came into being. But modern scientific discoveries pretty clearly show that most religions are, if not wrong, certainly don't match the existence we observe around us. Previously, monks and religious scribes were the only ones that could read, but nowadays you'll find scientific minds are majority atheist, and over the centuries it's spread into society at large. Notice how very few governments are Monarchies any more: hard to justify your authority is given to you by god when most of your subjects don't believe in that god.

      Both in personality and appearence.
While they are both fierce female deities, Anat is described as more violent and unhinged, lovingly killing humans as if they were wild animals to hunt.
That makes sense since she was the goddess of war and conquest.
Kāli is described as the most primal and fierce form of Devi.
She is just as violent as Anat, but not against humans per se.
Usually it's against demons or beings who are a threat to the order of the universe
She is one of the most revered hindu deities, and she is described as awe ispiring and terrifing, yet mercifull, compassionate and motherly.
Her worshippers are described as if they were her children.
She is basically a protective mama-bear mother goddess on steroids.

"I am the LORD, and there is none else,
there is no God beside Me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known Me:
That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside Me.
I am the LORD, and there is none else.
I form the light, and create darkness:
I make peace, and create evil:

Drop down, ye heavens, from above,
and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open,
and let them bring forth salvation,
    and let righteousness spring up together;
I the LORD have created it."
The difference between the Living God, the Creator of heavens & the earth, and these mythical deities that the canaanites served and worshipped, is that they are not living, they are stories and lore and dead idols created by the hands of sinful men.
The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is and always has been.
    Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
These little gods mentioned in this video are not holy... they are profane.

But our God is in the heavens:
He hath done whatsoever He hath pleased.
Their idols are silver and gold,
the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.
    They that make them are like unto them;
so is every one that trusteth in them.
    -
    *Psalm 135:13-18*
    Thy name, O' LORD,
endureth for ever; and Thy memorial,
    O' LORD, throughout all generations.
For the LORD will judge His people,
and He will repent Himself concerning His servants.
The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.
    They have mouths, but they speak not;
eyes have they, but they see not; They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths.

Baal began as a harvest seasons festival, then a bit later newborns and children began being sacrificed and still later it got to the point where the younger teens and young adults began using the festivals for wild orgies. They would dress in veils, mask and long robes where no one could identify them at these parties. They would then exchange sex with multiple partners while nobody knew one from the other.
Poem writings, stories and elaborate idols came into these festivals which are compared with modern role playing festivities and parties. Idols had value, often were traded, used for actual money and given as gifts. Many modern scholars compare these festivals as being no different than modern Teens having Halloween parties.
Gobblins as Gods, treats, beer and wine then there where elaborate stories of myth, ghost, zombies, vampires, deception, war and romance shared in a crypt, tomb, catacomb or cemetery while drinking intoxicants before the fun began.
The Harvest Moon.....In fact Halloween is suspected to have been a direct carry over of these pagan festivals. Teens and young adults back then had no Television, radio, or internet so they stuck close and invented their own fun and games.

@@AprilLynnDowney simple. My personally belief is that there’s only one god to worship creator of all things. Anything else is false. Just like if I were to start preaching to people that you are a God they would simply believe and start to worship you. They’re false no matter what people wanna make you think and they only relative because people make them, talks about them, worshiping them etc. people who are lost and always want to see rather than believe are the easiest to give these idols power. Every time they want to worship Baal some form of that idol was created. I mean it’s too much to write but I hope you get a sense of where I’m coming from. These conversations are better in person.

It is distinguished from symbolic behaviour (cult, ritual) and symbolic places or objects (temples, icons). Myths are specific accounts of gods or superhuman beings involved in extraordinary events or circumstances in a time that is unspecified but which is understood as existing apart from ordinary human experience. The term mythology denotes both the study of myth and the body of myths belonging to a particular religious tradition."

Indeed! Ba'al / Baal is the word for master / lord, so it is definitely used in the Bible. (However, note when you see LORD (in all capitals), the translation is using LORD instead of of "YHWH", one of the names of God, often pronounced Yahweh)

No, the Jews stole from the Pagans and created their own god. Yahweh hates Baal. He is jealous of Baal. If they were the same then the Hebrew god has multiple personality disorder.
