If you win, you get a drink as a reward. If you lose, you must drink as a penalty. Is this correct?

Geiko used to be the equivalent of the western Courtesans of Venice or Versailles like Montespan, or Veronica Franco, and used to be the most cultured, literate and witty women in Japan and just like the Courtesans they used to only entertain the intellectual elite of society. Imagine the dread of having to entertain those tourists by making them play kids games.

They actually played "kid" games with the elites back then too. Sometimes they engaged in witty conversation, yes, but sometimes their clients only wanted to relax and be in an easier world, and so they played this kind of games.

@@infjelphabasupporter8416 And you take your information from ?
Because i take my information from my mother in law, who is a former Geisha from Akasaka, originally born in Pontocho and raised by her Geiko mother who was herself raised by her Geiko grand mother.
My mother in law left Kyoto when Kyoto became a tourist attraction and the Kyoto Karyukai turned into what she calls Geishaland. Then she moved to Akasaka, the only still somehow authentic Kagai in Japan, along with Nagasaki.
She never entertained a tourist in her life and if the artists, aristocracy and intellectual elite she entertained had to be made to play Kunpira or Tora Tora she would have had a 3 years career instead of the 50 years she worked as a Geisha. She wouldn't even entertain foreigners unless they spoke fluent Japanese because half the fun of an evening with a Geisha is the conversation and the rhetorical masterpiece a professional Geisha can compose in the right setting (meaning, talking to intellectually not challenged customers).
She is training a young lady and the first thing she did when she reached 17 was to send her to prep school so she could enter university and get the Japanese equivalent of a PhD in either history or philosophy or economics. She chose law after studying religion and philosophy. and will graduate from law school to work as a lawyer if she pleases and also as a Geisha. That's what the customers of Akasaka are looking for. When they want silly and cheap they go to Kyoto, when they want the real deal they either book the only remaining three authentic Geiko in Kyoto or they go to Akasaka. The rest of the Geishaland entertains tourists and the customers who do not value the brain and just want the social status attached to being the patron of a Geiko from Kyoto.
I don't blame the Geisha at all, i blame the customers who have become increasingly stupid, and who entirely forgot what a Geisha is.
Trust me, nothing about the 80 000 yen per customer spent on being entertained by a Gion Geiko or especially a Maiko is justified. You're better off visiting a kindergarten to be entertained by children.
Unless you have Lady Mamezuru entertaining you, which is why she is booked solid years ahead, when she is not asked to join a customer in Tokyo and spend the evening with her Akasaka sisters who respect her immensely as the last true Kyoto Geiko.
You will never see Lady Mamezuru play Kunpira and Tora tora with tourists !

@@infjelphabasupporter8416 Thank you. Yes she was one of the last of her kind. I think in Akasaka the only living fossil today is Akasaka Ikuko , the last Geisha of the old school still working.
The Kagai is changing and Covid has shown that only brain can save a Geisha. While the Kyoto Okiya are shutting down one after another, not a single Geisha in Akasaka lost her job or her house. That's because they do not entertain tourists, s if times get tough or the borders get closed they still have their loyal local politician, scientists, gangsters, artists, aristocrats customers to entertain, and those are untouched by any economical crisis.
But to achieve that the Geisha from Akasaka spend more time studying economy and geopolitics and science than they do studying Music and Dance, because no Akasaka customer wants to pay 200 000 yen to watch a woman dance or play the shamisen or sing kouta. You can go to a Geisha recital in akasaka once a year for 6000 yen and get a front row.
That's why Kyoto is so badly hit by the economic crisis. It is entirely based on aesthetic and let's face it a CEO doesn't want have a chat about any relevant topic with a 15 year old girl and pay for the privilege.
Especially with the atomic bomb which was the tweets by Kiyoha the former Maiko who is on the verge of destroying the Kyoto Kagai for the better .
