@@KenshoQuest hey, in the website it says for shinjuku it is 6100yen and for odawara it is 5000yen which says only hakone area, so I am slight confused if it only covers the hakone area transportation and not the round trip to odawara or will it also cover the round trip to odawara? you also just mentioned hakone area and said it doesn't cover round trip from odawara to shinjuku but not about the the round trip from odawara to hakone. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Hi. With either version of the Hakone Free Pass, it covers unlimited rides between Odawara Station and Hakone-Yumoto Station on the Hakone Tozan Train. Once you reach Odawara Station, you are within the covered area for unlimited rides. Most people who are coming from Shinjuku Station will ride the train all the way to Hakone-Yumoto Station, rather than getting off at Odawara. @@lilyrawat245
so helpful, thank you, we are heading to Hakone and staying at a hotel and was having difficulty with transportation and luggage, sightseeing, now we know from your video we can ship our luggage and the loop takes us to Gora Station which is 5mins from our hotel. BLESSED lifesaver and convenience. Your loop explanation is 11/10
Glad to have helped! Since you are staying near Gora Station, I highly recommend visiting the Hakone Open-Air Museum. Here is info about luggage shipping from Hakone-Yumoto Station: www.odakyu.jp/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/baggage_yumoto-1.pdf
Yay! Glad to have helped. For anyone staying the night in the Gora area, after taking the cable car down the hill to Gora Station, you can head to your accommodation (instead of taking the train back to Hakone-Yumoto Station).
Your videos are always so informative. This is the only video that I fully understand the loop trips ( finally). i dont have to check elsewhere. Thank you so much.
Aloha, LOVE your videos! We start our vacation in Hakone. Our flight arrives 5:10 pm and we’ll be there for 5 days total. The first “day” will be spent getting to our studio across from Lake Ashi, day 2 we’ll explore the Lake Ashi area and for the final 3 days we’ll use the 3-day FreePass to follow your loop. A couple questions; Do the buses run into the evening? I want to skip Shinjuku station and find a bus that goes straight from HND to Hakone but the only ones I can find online are at 5:30 and 7:45pm. I think 5:30 is cutting it too close, so the 7:45 should find us in Hakone around 10pm? We’ll need to transfer from wherever the bus drops us. I’m nervous about winging it but will be ok if there are buses we can hop on that late (This also falls on a Saturday). Also, if we purchase the FreePass on Klook but are skipping Shinjuku station, where do we redeem the passes? Any info helps, Mahalo
Aloha! It does take around 2 hours to get from Haneda to Hakone-Yumoto Station. Once at Hakone-Yumoto Station you could catch a taxi. I wouldn't expect there to be buses running at 10pm in Hakone. Things close early there. If you want the Hakone Free Pass that doesn't include round trip from Shinjuku Station, I don't recommend purchasing on Klook. Instead, you can purchase the version of the pass that only includes the Hakone area. You can buy it at either Gora Station or Hakone-Yumoto Station. When you purchase it, let them know which day you want it to activate. Here's our separate video with more things to do in Hakone: ua-cam.com/video/WsoOBun2X_o/v-deo.html
Thanks for the very informative video! Our hotel is in Gora - once we arrive in Hakone Yumoto station, can we do the sightseeing loop counter-clock-wise? Drop off luggage in Gora hotel then go to volcanic area etc.
Yep! Drop off luggage in Gora. Then cable car, ropeway to volcanic valley, sightseeing boat across lake Ashi. Then you could either take a bus to Hakone-Yumoto Station and then train to Gora, OR you could back track and cross the lake again with the sightseeing boat, ride the ropeway again, and take the cable car to Gora. If you get the Hakone Free Pass, it’s unlimited rides. 🌸 Heidi
For a day trip, leaving Shinjuku around 9am would be good. Unless you have a digital Hakone Free Pass, I recommend picking up your pass at least a day ahead, so you can get an early start. 🌺 Heidi
Thank you so much for this informative video! Can we purchase our Hakone Free Pass and Romance Car tickets the morning of the day we travel to Hakone from Shinjuku or do we need to buy it ahead of time? Thanks!
Hi. You can purchase them the day of your travels, but the line can be very long at the Odakyu Sightseeing Services Center at Shinjuku Station, so you might wait an hour or more in line. If you have time to purchase them at least the day before it will allow you to get an earlier start to head to Hakone.
Thank you for the very informative video. I have two questions: one is can I buy the Free pass on the morning of the trip to Hakone or will it be better to buy them a few days in advance. The second one is kind of stupid but i have to ask: if we plan to arrive at Hakone on March 1 and we would like to stay there for 2 nights and head back to Tokyo on the 3rd. in the morning, do we buy the two day pass or am i mistaken? Thank you.
Hi. You will want a 3-Day Hakone Free Pass, if you plan to use it to get from Shinjuku to Hakone on March 1st and from Hakone to Shinjuku on March 3. Each day counts as a day, no matter what time you start using it. The 3-day pass is only slightly more expensive than the 2-day pass. If you are planning to purchase or pick-up the Hakone Free Pass in person at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center at Shinjuku Station, it's best to do it at least a day in advance. Otherwise your start time will be delayed, as you could be waiting in line for an hour. Here's our affiliate link, in case you plan to purchase this version: geni.us/hakonefreepass Otherwise, you could purchase digital passes on each person's smart phone. Or it may now be possible to get the Hakone Free Pass from ticketing machines at the train station. I'm not sure, as it wasn't an option when we were last in Japan. Here's the website with more details: www.odakyu.jp/english/passes/hakone/ 🌺 Heidi
1:51 if my friends and I are traveling from shinjuku to Hakone (no round trip, we have an Airbnb in Hakone), does the Hakone free pass (not round trip ticket) include transportation from shinjuku to Hakone? Or do we have to purchase the train ticket separately?
Hi. When we went to Hakone and stayed in an Airbnb we purchased the version of the Hakone Free Pass that includes transportation from Shinjuku (and also paid to upgrade to the Romancecar). It was fine that we only used Shinjuku to Hakone one-way and not round trip. If you want, you could purchase the version of the pass that only includes Hakone and separately buy tickets from Shinjuku to Hakone, but I'm not sure that would save any money and it might be more hassle. 🌺 Heidi
Very informative video. I have a question though. You’re saying that if we want to upgrade to the romance car we have to have 2 separate tickets? One is the limited express ticket and the other one would be the Hakone freepass?
Can you give us a recommendation of the airbnb that you stayed in and activities or is it in another vid? We will be visiting in a few weeks and are finalizing our itinerary. Thank you for your help and useful videos.
We stayed in an Airbnb near Iriuda Station (one stop from Hakone-Yumoto). It was a nice 2 bedroom place. But it was located up a steep hill! Our kids loved the Open Air Museum. We spent a whole day there. They also enjoyed glass blowing at Crafthouse in Gora Park. We also visited the Natural History Museum, since we were a short walk away. And of course, the sightseeing loop mentioned in this video. Going to an onsen is one thing we didn’t fit into this trip. And I would have liked visiting more museums. 🌺 Heidi
Wow, really useful information.. Which is the best, if i want to visit kawaguchiko and hakone, Fuji Hakone pass or buy hakone pass and Mt.Fuji pass separately?
Awesome and very informational video! I will be using your link to purchase the Hakone Free Pass. I will be staying in Shinjuku and then heading to Hakone afterwards. I already bought a JR Pass. Do you think it's faster/more convenient to take the JR Pass down to Odawara station and then onwards to Hakone? Or would it be better to take the Romance Car from Shinjuku straight to Hakone-Yumoto station?
Hi. Since you have a JR Pass, you can use that to take a Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo to Odawara Station. Thanks for wanting to use our link, but you don't really need the Hakone Free Pass that includes transportation from Shinjuku. Once you arrive at Odawara Station, you can purchase a Hakone Free Pass that includes only the Hakone area. From Odawara you can take a train to Hakone-Yumoto, which is already covered by the pass. Here's our other video with things to do in Hakone: ua-cam.com/video/WsoOBun2X_o/v-deo.html
This is comprehensive. thanks. BTW can you use the same free pass you purchased in shinjuku and then use it on hakone buses? or you have to purchase two separate free pases? one for shinjuku to hakone yumoto and the one around hakone?
Hi. You just need to purchase one Hakone Free Pass. If you purchase the version that starts from Shinjuku, that same pass also includes the transport around Hakone. 🌺 Heidi
Thank you so much so far for all the information we got from your helpful videos. We are going to Japan very soon with our kids (7, 5, 2 years) and are wondering if they need car seats in the public transportation busses such as those included in the Hakone Free Pass.
Hi. Car seats would only be necessary if riding in private cars. We only use car seats if one of our friends gives us a ride in their car. They are not required for buses, trains, or any of the other transportation included in the Hakone Free Pass. Have fun! 🌺 Heidi
@@KekePania-ze9dp We bought ours the day of travel when returning to Shinjuku. We wanted to buy it the day before but the lady helping us convinced us to wait, since we weren’t sure what time train we wanted to book. It’s possible it could get fully booked, but probably only during a really busy time of year.
Hi. The Hakone Free Pass is only offered as 2-Day or 3-Day. However, it's still worth getting the 2-Day pass to use for one day, if you will complete the sightseeing loop described in this video. 🌸 Heidi
If we are planning on going from Tokyo - Hakone - Kyoto, and upgrading to the Romancecar, would your recommend getting the round trip pass to include shinjuku to hakone or the free pass that only includes hakone area?
I would recommend getting the Hakone Free Pass that includes transportation from Shinjuku, even though you will only use it one direction. It only cost 1,100 Yen more, and it would cost at least that for the basic fare from Tokyo to Hakone. Plus it’s more convenient than buying a separate ticket. When it’s time to head to Kyoto, you can get on a Shinkansen from Odawara Station. 🌺 Heidi
We enjoy your videos, thank you for your time. Instead of taking the 90-minute Romancecar from Shinjuku, can you take a 33-minute bullet train from Tokyo Station to Odawara Station and then transfer to the Hakone-Tozan line?
Yes, you can certainly do that, as well. In that case, you can purchase the Hakone Free Pass at Odawara Station (the version that only covers the Hakone area). Here’s my separate video with more things to do in Hakone: ua-cam.com/video/WsoOBun2X_o/v-deo.htmlsi=R3kQ0e52n7Y6zHED
Fantastic video and you deserve your commissions from the links that I will remember to use. Just one question regarding upgrading to the Romance Car Express from Shinjuku. I plan to go on a 3 day, 2 night trip to Hakone. If I upgrade, will I get 2 tickets--one ticket for the regular trip price plus a second ticket for the Romance Car Express? How do I insert 2 tickets into the entry machine at the Shinjuku station, if they come separately? My second question is whether the upgrade is good for one way or round trip? Because after Hakone, I'm actually going to Machida to attend a relative's wedding before returning to Shinjuku 2 days later.
Hi. You can purchase the Romancecar upgrade (technically called "Limited Express Surcharge") for one direction Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto for 1,200 Yen. If the Hakone Free Pass you receive is the size and shape of a train ticket, you can insert it into the automatic ticket gate as your Base Fare. That may be all you need to insert, and just hold onto the Limited Express Surcharge ticket. If you do need to insert them both, you can stack them together and insert into the automatic ticket gate. I just released a video explaining all about Limited Express trains, which includes the Romancecar as an example: ua-cam.com/video/b672euihOGE/v-deo.html
Thanks for this great information. How often does the pirate ship sail, and are reservations required? Are upgraded tickets purchased in advance or at the time of departure? I'm having trouble finding a schedule for it.
I’m not sure the schedule, but it runs pretty often. You don’t need to make reservations. When you get in line to board the ship, the line goes by the ticket counter where you can pay to upgrade to 1st class. Have fun! Are you guys based in Tokyo? 🌸 Heidi
This is so helpful!! I was wondering, how did you pay for the upgraded first class ticket on the pirate ship if you already have the Hakone Free Pass? Is it just cash upon boarding or online? Thanks!!
Hi. There is an indoor line to board the Pirate Ship. When you get in line, you can proceed to the ticket counter, where you can show your pass and pay the fee to upgrade to first class. 🌸 Heidi
We just purchased the 3 days pass from your klook link , can we upgrade to romance car in advance or it has to be after we picked up the actual ticket in person ? If we can’t upgrade in advance , will the Romance car seat sold out? Thanks
Hi. When we bought the Hakone Free Pass from Klook we waited until we picked up our passes to pay for the Romancecar upgrade. I think you can pay online ahead of time for the "Limited Express Surcharge" which is 1,200 Yen/adult. If you purchase online, let us know how it goes. Thank you for your very informative videos. We are planning a trip to Tokyo, Kyoto and Hakone the first week of July ‘24. Could you tell me if it is easier to travel by Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hakone and then on to Kyoto, or would it be more efficient to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto and then to Hakone. Whichever itinerary we choose we will need to end up back in Tokyo where we are flying out of Haneda airport. Thank you and truly your videos have been a lifesaver as we are planning this trip.
Hi. If you'd like to take a Shinkansen from Tokyo Station heading towards Hakone, you can ride the Shinkansen to Odawara Station. From Odawara Station you can switch to a local train to get the rest of the way to Hakone-Yumoto Station. This will be faster, but also more expensive, than riding the Romancecar Limited Express train from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. After you are done visiting Hakone, you can back track to Odawara Station. From Odawara Station you can board a Shinkansen to Kyoto. Will you be using a JR Pass or purchasing individual tickets?
There isn't much room on the bus for luggage. There is luggage forwarding available at Hakone-Yumoto Station, if you need to ship your bags to your hotel. Or there are luggage lockers for the day.
Hello. If I am going to Hakone from Shinjuku. I also intend to take the romance car (to hakone) I understand a limited express surcharge is required. A hakone pass also includes a standard ticket. How do I sync the ticket timings? Do I have to select the train timings for when purchasing the hakone pass? I tried navigating to limited express (romance car) and I saw I can choose train time/carriage etc. does purchasing hakone pass also require me to choose the train time from Shinjuku to hakone?
Hi. Only the Romancecar requires selecting a specific time and seat, as it is reserved. When purchasing the Hakone Free Pass you don’t need to designate a certain time for the trip from Shinjuku to Hakone. 🌺 Heidi
Hi! Just purchased our passes using your link :) Quick question regarding redeeming the voucher from Klook. I understand this is done at the Odakyu Sightseeing Center. Do you have to redeem the day of your trip, or could I go to redeem it a few days before and make my Romancecar reservation? We're staying right near Shinjuku station so don't want to be rushed the day of the trip if this is possible. Thank you!
Hi. Thanks! I think you should be able to pick it up in advance. Just be sure to tell them your desired start date, so they issue it for the correct dates. Let us know how it goes. 🌺 Heidi
When you arrive at Hakone-Yumoto Station, you can have your luggage shipped to your hotel in Gora. Then you’re luggage-free to sightsee for the day. 🌸 Heidi
Hi, thank you once again for the fantastic videos you make. This is going to be our first time in Japan in Sept. Is the Hakone area a good place to get views of Mt.Fuji. I’m confused if we should take the Hakone free pass or do the bus tour to Kawaguchiko. We intend to make it a day trip just to get to see Mt.Fuji and get some pictures. Gosh so confused. Please advise. Thank you.
Hi. Kawaguchiko is closer to Mt. Fuji and you have a better chance of getting an unobstructed view of Mt. Fuji. From Hakone you can sometimes see Mt. Fuji in the distance, but only if the sky is clear enough. So a day trip to Kawaguchiko would probably be the better option.
Thank you for your informative video! Just want to ask where did u buy the open air museumto get the discount when u buy the free pass because i saw in klook there’s a ticket for open air museum but i think it’s at regular price. Thanks
Sorry if I missed the answer in the video, but if I upgrade to the Romancecar with the 2day Hakone Freepass, is the Romancecar only one way? Then would I have to buy another Romancecar ticket on the way back to Tokyo? Thank you!
Hi. Yes, you would need to pay the Romancecar Limited Express Surcharge of 1,200 Yen twice, to cover going and returning. Here’s more info: www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/surcharges/
Excellent video! How long would you say it takes to go through the sight seeing loop? Also, I've booked a stay at a hotel for 1 night in Hakone. Would it still be worth it to purchase the 2 day Hakone Freepass in my case?
One day is good for completing the sightseeing loop. Since you’re staying one night in Hakone, the 2-day pass is perfect. Here are some other things to do in Hakone: ua-cam.com/video/WsoOBun2X_o/v-deo.htmlsi=MDRtP7nMIxspTUDx
@@KenshoQuest Thanks. Since we would want to be spending time at the Hakone Hotel and Onsen, do you think the sight seeing loop is doable within 5 hours? Also I will be travelling with a 1 year old baby :)
Just one more question pls. At the Hakone Yomato station, do you think the luggage storage services can store an long lengthwise umbrella stroller and if so, would they allow that overnight?
Hello, traveling to japan in two weeks, me and my friend are staying in tokyo until December 6 and then head to Hakone/mount fuji for 3 day trip. your videos are so helpful but i have one question, kinda confused, when you say upgrade to romance car, are you saying buy the regular first and upgrade or you can buy the romance car from the start at Shinjuku station or can you buy it on your phone? At japan stations, can you use apple pay at any of japan t stations? thank you so much
Hi. The Romancecar train will take you all the way from Shinjuku Station to Hakone-Yumoto Station. Anytime you ride a Limited Express Train, such as the Romancecar, you need to pay both the base fare and the limited express surcharge. The Hakone Freepass covers the base fare. There are multiple ways to pay the limited express surcharge. You can pay at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center at Shinjuku Station when you pick up your pass. Or you can pay online through e-Romancecar, or you can pay through a ticket vending machine. Here's the info: www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/surcharges/ You might actually be interested in the Fuji Hakone Pass which includes everything in the Hakone Freepass, plus trains and buses in the Mt. Fuji Area. Here's my separate video about the Fuji Hakone Pass. It also explains the Romancecar better. ua-cam.com/video/q8fKOlf34rU/v-deo.html You might be able to use Apple Pay at some Tokyo Stations. It's best to have an IC card to pay for local trains, as IC cards are widely accepted. Through Apple Wallet you can install either Suica, PASMO, or ICOCA. These digital IC cards work the same as the plastic cards. 🌸 Heidi
One of crazy thing about their online ticketing is how taxing to buy multiple tickets for your family group, they were assuming each individual hold a smartphone and capable to purchase hakone freepass with their credit cards, and the only workaround to do so is a person buy the ticket multiple time and transfer it individually to registered smartphone, what a hassle!
Yes, that’s why we didn’t buy our Hakone Free Passes digitally from Odakyu Railway. Our kids don’t have their own smartphones. We purchased from Klook and picked up our paper passes at Shinjuku Station.
I think a day or two in advance would be fine. If you will use the Hakone Free Pass, you can pay the Romancecar surcharge online. Here’s the website: www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/

Thank you for this information! Would you know if it is applicable for one-way trip from Hakone to Shinjuku (instead of what was mentioned Shinjuku to Hakone)?
Hi. There are two different versions of the Hakone Free Pass. The one we link to includes round trip between Shinjuku and Hakone. Affiliate link: geni.us/hakonefreepass So you can use it both ways, or just one way. If you have that version you could use it just Hakone to Shinjuku. However, this type of pass needs to be picked up at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center at Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. The other version does not include transportation to and from Tokyo. It only includes transportation within the Hakone area, starting from Odawara Station. If you plan to buy the Hakone Free Pass in person at Hakone-Yumoto Station, this is likely the version you will get. It's easy to also purchase a Romancecar ticket from Hakone to Shinjuku while at Hakone Yumoto Station. Hope that helps. 🌺 Heidi
If I want to upgrade ticket for the boat, with Hakone Free pass to the first class, BCS the view on the deck really pretty, where must I upgrade it? In the boat, or in the ticket counter? Thank you~ your video realllyyyy helpful 🙂
Hi, this is a great video, thank you. I don’t think I heard the steps to actually upgrade to the Romance Car though, assuming I purchased the 3 day pass on Klook. Is that something I would do at the station with a person or is it possible to do online before I arrive? Thanks again!
Hi. You can either pay the Limited Express Surcharge for the Romancecar at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center at Shinjuku Station when picking up your Hakone Free Pass, or you can pay online at: www.web-odakyu.com/e-romancecar/?language=en&country= I explain each of the ways to pay in this separate video that explains Limited Express trains: ua-cam.com/video/b672euihOGE/v-deo.html
I bought the Hakone Free pass with Klook for 11th july, ami able to collect the ticket and upgrade my ticket to the Romance car in advance so as to save time on the actual day?
Yes! I recommend picking it up in advance, so you can get an earlier start on the day you head to Hakone. I think you can pick it up once you are within 30 days of your travel date. 🌸 Heidi
Thank you for sharing. I will definitely be using your itinerary when i go to Hakone in March. I'm a bit confused about the tickets. I will be staying in Shinjuku and plan to take the Romancecar to Hakone. What should I do? Buy the Freepass first, then book the Romancecar. I can book at the Odakyu office but I am worried the tickets may be sold out as it is cherry blossom season.
Hi. You can also purchase a digital Hakone Free Pass, that you would show on your phone. And you can pay for the upgrade to the Romancecar online. @KenshoQuest Sorry to bother you again. Is there a way to buy the Hakone Freepass Online, then book the Romancecar? I do not wish to buy the digital tickets. I will only reach Tokyo on the 18 of March.
Hi, thanks for the video & great recommendation. I have a question though, can I make a train reservation (normal limited express, not Romancecar) in advance with the freepass?
Hi. The train that is included in the Hakone Free Pass that does not cost extra is a regular local train, not a Limited Express train. There are no reserved seats on the regular local train, which takes 120 minutes from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. Here is a comparison between the regular train and the Limited Express Romancecar: www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/about/
Hi! Thank you for all the info. I have a question. If my wife and I are coming to Hakone from Osaka but we purchase the Odakyu Hakone Free Pass for travel within Odawara, can we still use it to go from Odawara to Shinjuku just for the oneway?
Hi, yes, absolutely as long as you purchase the Hakone Free Pass. We also highly recommend the Romance Car upgrade as it will guarantee you a seat on the train

Also, if I by the digital version of the free pass, do I still need to print out the ticket at Shinjuku station, or can I just show the pass on the phone, when I enter the bus at Hakone Yumoto station? Hi. If you buy the Hakone Free Pass with round trip from Shinjuku, you can ride it all the way to Hakone-Yumoto Station. You do not need to get off at Odawara. If you purchase the Hakone Free Pass voucher on Klook, you need to pick up the actual physical pass at the Odakyu Sightseeing Visitors Center at Shinjuku Station. I have one more question that I hope you can help me with🙂 My plan is to go to Odawara station with the Shinkansen, since I never have travelled with that type of train before. Then go to Motohakone, and do the Hakone loop from there. But I struggle a bit to understand if both the direct bus from Odawara to Motohakone, and the alternative route, with train from Odawara station to Hakone Yumoto station, and then bus from there to Motohakone, is include in the Hakone free pass?
Hello again. Looking at the map of covered transportation, I don't see a bus directly from Odawara to Motohakone-ko. I think you would need to go first to Hakone-Yumoto Station. On this website you can view the "available area" www.odakyu.jp/english/passes/hakone/#Section1@@morten2001
@@KenshoQuest Yes, I think you are right. I have looked at the link you posted, and it looks like I have to go to Odawara station first. Thank you again, and sorry for the back and forth regarding this subject🙂

Yes, Hakone Free Pass plus Limited Express Surcharge for the Romancecar. The pass covers the base fare. Here’s the explanation: www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/surcharges/
Hi, if we purchase the Hakone Free Pass on Klook, is it a digital pass or do we still need to wait in line to collect the passes at Odakyu Sightseeing Center (Shinjuku station)?

Hi. It took a couple days for the glass pieces to ship. We had them sent to our friend's house in Japan and picked them up from there. If we'd been staying in the same hotel for at least a week we might have shipped to the hotel. 🌸 Heidi
Great vid! I was wondering do you know what's the baggage allowance for hakone free pass (romancecar and other buses like odakyu)? I have 2 suitcases with me (1 medium size, 1 small) is it going to be a problem going on the train and buses?
Hi. I think that would be fine to take on the train. However, the buses were sometimes standing-room-only for us. That wouldn’t be fun with luggage. Are you planning a day trip to Hakone? If so, you could leave luggage at Shinjuku station. Are you planning to spend a couple nights in Hakone? If so, you could bring your suitcases on the train to Hakone-Yumoto. Then either: store them at the train station until you check into your accommodation, or use the luggage delivery service to ship them to your accommodation. Hope that helps. 🌺 Heidi
I just purchased my romance car train tickets from the Odakyu website itself. My children are 3 and 6 and I bought a ticket for them. Did I not need one for them? :( I didn’t want them to get stuck without a seat or having them sit on our lap.
Hi, train tickets are required for 6-years-old and up. It's fine you bought a ticket for your 3-year-old, so they will have their own seat. When we don’t buy tickets for our younger two, we’re always prepared that they may end up sitting on our laps.
I'm arriving to Hakone from Hiroshima, then I'm staying in Gora. The following day, where shoud I go first to start my visit? I'm spending the whole day in Hakone and in the evening I'm heading to Tokyo, is the Hakone-Shinjuku train included in the Hakone Free pass? Thank you sooooo much!
Hi. There are two version of the Hakone Free Pass. One version includes round trip Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. However, I think you need to pick up that pass at Shinjuku Station. The other version only includes transportation within the Hakone area. That might be a better option, as you can purchase it a Hakone-Yumoto station when you arrive. You would need to purchase a separate train ticket to return to Shinjuku, which is easy to purchase at Hakone-Yumoto Station. If you have a chance, I highly recommend visiting The Hakone Open Air Museum, located near Gora. Since you are starting from Gora, you could do the sightseeing loop backwards from the way I described in this video. So start by taking the cable car up the hill, then the ropeway to Owakudani and Lake Ashi, then cross Lake Ashi on the Pirate Ship. Then you could take a bus to Hakone-Yumoto Station, where you would catch a train to Shinjuku.
Hi Kensho Quest, another fantastic video! Question about Romance Car vs Shinkansen for getting to Hakone from Shinjuku. Seems like it's possible to take the Hikari Shinkansen to Odawara station also? How would you compare the two, any preference b/w the two? Appreciate any insights, Thanks again! :D
Hi. Thanks! You could take a Shinkansen from either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station to Odawara. That option is faster (about half an hour), but more expensive at around 3,280 Yen. Personally, if I had an active JR Pass, I would take a Shinkansen to Odawara Station. But otherwise, I would use the Hakone Free Pass that includes transportation from Shinjuku and upgrade to the Romancecar for Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto (80 minutes). Here's some more info about the Romancecar: www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/about/
@@KenshoQuest Ah, that is fantastic info! We don't plan to use the JR Pass, and we will live close to Shinjuku station, so the Romancecar seems like a great option for us, Thanks again!
thanks for this great video! From what I understand, regardless if I get the Hakone Free Pass or not, I still book and pay 1200 yen - previously I thought that purchasing a Hakone Free Pass would discount the Romancecar fare down to 1200 yen. So just to confirm I got it right - I first purchase a Hakone Free Pass (~$68AU), then book Romancecar through e-Romancecar with reserved seats?
It normally costs 2,470 Yen to ride the Romancecar from Shinjuku Station to Hakone-Yumoto Station. If you purchase the Hakone Free Pass it covers the base fare, so you only need to pay the Limited Express Surcharge of 1,200 Yen, which can be paid online. Here’s the website: www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/
Hello! I'll be heading from Odawara to Gora followed by rope way to Togendai. Am I allowed to carry one bagpack and a hand held duffle bag on this route? ( I don't want to ship them or use a locker) My plan is to finish the cruise around Lake Ashi and head to Mt.Fuji station where I have my hostel booked for the night. Wondering if any luggage restrictions? And will time be sufficient to travel ? Please share your opinion. Many thanks 😊
Hi, We are not sure about luggage restrictions. There could possibly be for the ropeway. We each carried daypack backpacks with us. You might want to ask the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center to double check. The other consideration is that the buses and cable car can be very crowed, standing room only. The route we recommend is Hakone Yumoto Station > Hakone Tozan Bus to Moto Hakone-ko to visit the shrine and torii. Then take the cruise one way to Togendai. Then you will take the ropeway and cable car to Gora. Once in Gora you can take a bus to Gotemba. That's as far towards Mt Fuji as you can get with the Hakone Free Pass. Unless you have other transportation arranged from Lake Ashi? And yes, this is all doable in a day to get you to Mt. Fuji station.
Thank you for me tioning motion sickness on the bus ride. Is there an alternative to the bus, or do you need the bus to be able to access all of the other parts of the loop?
Hi. If you don't want to ride the bus, you can take the Hakone Tozan Train from Hakone-Yumoto Station to Gora Station. Then take the cable car. Then the ropeway. Then the sightseeing ship across lake Ashi. Then repeat everything in reverse: sightseeing ship, ropeway, cable car, Hakone Tozan Train (which zig zags back and forth down the hill). Just make sure you note what time things like the ropeway close, so you get back in time. 🌸 Heidi
Hello!! I already purchased a hakone free pass and I’m planning to upgrade to romance car, is it okay to upgrade it on the day of the trip? Won’t I have problems regarding a seat availability? Thank you :))
Seat availability depends upon whether it's a busy time of year. We picked up our Hakone Free Pass and upgraded to the Romancecar at the Odakyu Sightseeing Services Center at Shinjuku Station on the day of our trip. We waited in line for at least an hour. I'd advise doing it the day before, if you plan to head to Hakone early in the morning. @@KenshoQuest 😭😭😭 thank you so much for taking the time to respond to this message :)) I will be traveling alone and you (especially this video) took my worries away ✨ I appreciate it!
Hi, thanks for making such informative videos! Our family is planning a 2 day 1 night trip to hakone/mt Fuji from tokyo. We are not sure if we should do Mt Fuji on Day 1, stay the night there n go to hakone on Day 2, or, do hakone on Day 1, stay the night there n go to mt Fuji on Day 2. Any advice? Thanks!
I would start by comparing accommodations to see whether you’d rather sleep near Mt Fuji or in Hakone. The sightseeing loop in Hakone can be completed in one day. What do you plan to do at Fuji?
@KenshoQuest Mainly walk around Lake Kawaguchi and maybe visit Oshino Hakkai. One of the highlights of our trip would be to stay at a ryokan n enjoy a kaiseki dinner.
Thank you for the useful information! Do you have to make separate reservations for any of the rides (the boats, cable car, etc.)? Did your family also visit any of the Onsen theme parks (Hakone Kowakien Yunessun)?
Hi! The only thing we needed to reserve was the Romancecar from/to Shinjuku. For everything else (pirate ship, ropeway, cable car, etc) we just showed our Hakone Free Passes (which sometimes got stamped) and got right on. We didn’t need to exchange for actual tickets or anything like that. I wanted to visit Yunessun Onsen theme park, but we didn’t have a chance on this trip. An onsen will be at the top of our list next time we visit! www.yunessun.com/global/en/spa/ 🌺 Heidi
Hi. There is nowhere to store luggage on local trains. Just an overhead rack for small bags, such as a backpack. It's best to avoid bringing luggage onto local trains during rush hour. If you do bring a suitcase onto a train, try not to block other people from being able to get on and off the train. Here's our Guide to Traveling with Luggage in Japan: ua-cam.com/video/w0KnobpyfSI/v-deo.html 🌸 Heidi
I believe so. You can pay the Romance Car surcharge at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center (Shinjuku Station) even if you purchased the base fare elsewhere.
Hi ive watched the video but wanted to make sure here in comment section (coz english not my primary) Can buy free pass at hakone yumoto via cash? In that vid, the entire trip shown, u did not take the bus back to hakone yumoto because there is a direct train? Ty hope u still remember. Godbless.
Yes, you can buy the Hakone Free Pass at Hakone-Yumoto Station. Yes, we took the train back to Hakone-Yumoto. It’s a loop, ending at your starting point. Here’s our other video about Hakone: ua-cam.com/video/WsoOBun2X_o/v-deo.htmlsi=38jfZ2EU5gO-Rja1
Yes. The Hakone Free Pass includes transportation that is not covered by the JR Pass. You can use the JR Pass to ride a Shinkansen train to Odawara Station. From there you can buy a Hakone Free Pass that only covers the Hakone area. Here's our other video about visiting Hakone: ua-cam.com/video/WsoOBun2X_o/v-deo.html
Hi, when you reserve your seat for the way back, you do need to choose a specific time. But you don't need to reserve your seat right away. We waited until we finished sightseeing on our final day to book the Romancecar back to Tokyo. That's because we weren't sure exactly what time we would be ready to head back. 🌸 Heidi
We are traveling from Tokyo to Hakone and staying one night at a Hakone ryokan as a family of 4 ( sons are 28,25 ). Is it possible to do the Hakone Loop in one day including transportation from Tokyo in the morning and be able to get to the ryokan by about 4 pm for check-in? We don't want to be late for our kaiseki dinner.
I think you should be fine if you leave Shinjuku around 9am. Make sure to pick up your Hakone Free Pass ahead of time, so you aren't waiting in line that day. Is your Ryokan near Gora Station? It would be faster to get there than back to Hakone Yumoto-Station. 🌸 Heidi
Hi, a question on the Hakone Yuryo day spa - does it accept walk-in customers ? I am not sure if a reservation would be necessary as I am doing the clockwise route from Moto-Hakone to Togendai , but I don't have a good sense when I would reach the day spa
I think you can walk-in for using the public baths. They accept reservations in advance for private baths. We haven't personally visited yet. Here is the website with more info for Hakone Yuryo Day Spa: www.hakoneyuryo.jp/english/qa/
Hello I hear that there is also Mount fuji Hakone pass both in one ticket but there is no option like this in the Odakyu website.Did they remove it ? thank you
So if you have the Hakone free pass from Shinjuku and the ticket for the romancecar, you don't have to purchase the normal ticket for the romancecar too? This video is so usefull :D
That's correct. If you have the Hakone Free Pass and the "Limited Express Surcharge" for the Romancecar, you do not need to pay the "base fare" for riding the Romancecar from Shinjuku. Here's my other video on things to do in Hakone: ua-cam.com/video/WsoOBun2X_o/v-deo.html
Hi Kensho Quest! I understand that if we have the Hakone free pass and wanted to upgrade to the Romancecar, we need only to pay another extra 1200 yen for the Limited Express Surcharge ticket to get to Hakone. Then, what about returning back to Shinjuku by Romancecar? Can we also do the same by purchasing only Limited Express Surcharge ticket?
@@KenshoQuest Thank for your reply! Just to double confirm; If I buy a 3 days Hakone free pass (15-17Dec), on the 15th, I can purchase one Limited Express Surcharge ticket (1200 yen) to Hakone, and on the 17th, I can also purchase only the Limited Express Surcharge Ticket (1200 yen) back to Shinjuku?
Yes. And you could probably purchase both on Dec 15 if you know what time you want to depart on Dec 17. The only worry is if the train were to get fully booked. So some people are purchasing the surcharge in advance online. Here's the website with details on the various ways you can by the Romancecar surcharge: www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/@@jeslynsim6948
Yes. The Hakone Free Pass includes unlimited rides on covered transportation. So you can take the bus to Gotemba round trip, or back and forth as many times as you want. 🌸 Heidi
I believe it’s the same price on Klook as it is at Shinjuku Station. The version on Klook includes round trip from Shinjuku Station. If you buy the version that only covers Hakone Area at Odawara Station, that is 1,100 Yen cheaper. 🌸 Heidi
Hi. To go directly from Hakone-Yumoto to the sightseeing boat, it's either taking the bus or train + bus. If you are referring to public transportation included in the Hakone Free Pass. (If you have your own car you could drive.) You could travel counter clockwise on the loop, but that would involve riding the train, cable car, and ropeway before arriving at Lake Ashi. 🌺 Heidi
Hi. No, the Romancecar is not included in the JR Pass. It is part of Odakyu Railway, which is not part of the JR Group. To go specifically from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, the best option is the Hakone Free Pass. If you want to get as close as you can to Hakone using the JR Pass, you can take the Tokaido Shinkansen line (from either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station) to Odawara Station. That is as close as you can get to Hakone using JR trains. I recommend getting a Hakone Free Pass once at Odawara Station that includes just the Hakone area starting from Odwara Station. It will allow you to sightsee using local transportation such as buses, trains, sightseeing boat, rope way, and cable car. None of these local forms of transportation are JR, so they are not covered by the JR Pass. I hope that helps clarify.

@@KenshoQuest hello Heidi,
I plan to also visit Mt. Takao and Kawaguchi
🌸 Heidi

What time would you suggest leaving Shinjuku if we are doing a day trip? Thanks for your video!

Here's our affiliate link, in case you plan to purchase this version: geni.us/hakonefreepass
Otherwise, you could purchase digital passes on each person's smart phone. Or it may now be possible to get the Hakone Free Pass from ticketing machines at the train station.
Yes, that is correct.
The Fuji Hakone Pass offered by Odakyu Railway is a great option for visiting both!
Also do you have a voucher link for the Hakone Free Pass that includes the upgrade to the Romance Car?
Thanks in advance!
This is comprehensive. thanks. BTW can you use the same free pass you purchased in shinjuku and then use it on hakone buses? or you have to purchase two separate free pases? one for shinjuku to hakone yumoto
and the one around hakone?
Have fun! 🌺 Heidi
Another question concerning the Romancecar reservation: Do you know if they ever sell out or can they actually be bought the day of travel?

If we are planning on going from Tokyo - Hakone - Kyoto, and upgrading to the Romancecar, would your recommend getting the round trip pass to include shinjuku to hakone or the free pass that only includes hakone area?
I would recommend getting the Hakone Free Pass that includes transportation from Shinjuku, even though you will only use it one direction. It only cost 1,100 Yen more, and it would cost at least that for the basic fare from Tokyo to Hakone. Plus it’s more convenient than buying a separate ticket.
Your family is so beautiful!
Here's the website: www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/surcharges/
Hi, @wt7668 were you able to purchase online in advance? I want to do that too if it works! 😊
I am interested on a day trip to Nikko Japan February 2024 but I am not finding a Kensho Quest video of Nikko - have you explored the area yet? Awesome video of Hakone day trip - how soon do I have to buy the Hakone-free pass, we will be in Tokyo, Japan last week of February 2024 for 6 days and will also be needing a pocket wi-fi.
Hi, we have not yet made a video on Nikko and won't be until around March or April 2024. Sorry!
Regarding the Hakone free pass, there is no rush as they don't sell out. However, it does get super crowded on the weekends and there are many day trippers as well. Let us know if you have further questions!

Great video. Thanks a lot.
Just acquestion, is it possible to bring luggage on the bus from Hakone Yumoto to Moto Hakone?
There isn't much room on the bus for luggage. There is luggage forwarding available at Hakone-Yumoto Station, if you need to ship your bags to your hotel. Or there are luggage lockers for the day.
Sending love and thanks to you
🌺 Heidi
Very helpful! What do you do with luggage if you are staying overnight in Gora?
Thanks
Hi. We bought our tickets at the entrance to the Hakone Open Air Museum. We showed our Hakone Free Passes to get the discount. 🌸 Heidi
Here’s more info:
www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/surcharges/
@@KenshoQuest Thank you! All the info's greatly appreciated.

Here's the info: www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/surcharges/

You might be able to use Apple Pay at some Tokyo Stations.
Going to Japan in early Nov..how far in advance should I buy a ticket for the Romancecar (Shinjuku - Hakone) to guarantee a seat?
I think a day or two in advance would be fine. If you will use the Hakone Free Pass, you can pay the Romancecar surcharge online. Here’s the website: www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/
Is there any luggage delivery service at Hakone-Yumoto station to hakone hotels?
Yes, there is! That would have saved us from pulling our bags up the hill to the Airbnb we rented. www.odakyu.jp/english/support/baggage/

@@KenshoQuest Thanks, very very thanks, in Klool I have to buy my tickets, but, not accept mi credit cards, only in Pay Pal I will make.
There is a ticket counter for the sightseeing boat, where you can pay to upgrade your ticket.
Hi, this is a great video, thank you. I don’t think I heard the steps to actually upgrade to the Romance Car though, assuming I purchased the 3 day pass on Klook. Is that something I would do at the station with a person or is it possible to do online before I arrive? Thanks again!

Hi, thanks for the video & great recommendation. I have a question though, can I make a train reservation (normal limited express, not Romancecar) in advance with the freepass?

Hello! I'll be heading from Odawara to Gora followed by rope way to Togendai. Am I allowed to carry one bagpack and a hand held duffle bag on this route?
( I don't want to ship them or use a locker)
My plan is to finish the cruise around Lake Ashi and head to Mt.Fuji station where I have my hostel booked for the night.
Wondering if any luggage restrictions? And will time be sufficient to travel ? Please share your opinion. Many thanks 😊
Hi,
We are not sure about luggage restrictions.
🌸 Heidi

I believe so. You can pay the Romance Car surcharge at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center (Shinjuku Station) even if you purchased the base fare elsewhere.
Hi ive watched the video but wanted to make sure here in comment section (coz english not my primary)
Can buy free pass at hakone yumoto via cash?
In that vid, the entire trip shown, u did not take the bus back to hakone yumoto because there is a direct train? Ty hope u still remember. Godbless.
Yes, you can buy the Hakone Free Pass at Hakone-Yumoto Station. Yes, we took the train back to Hakone-Yumoto. It’s a loop, ending at your starting point. Here’s our other video about Hakone: ua-cam.com/video/WsoOBun2X_o/v-deo.htmlsi=38jfZ2EU5gO-Rja1
I had buy Japan Rail Pass 7 days. I need buy Hakone Free Pass? Thanks
Do you have the book a specific time for the train back as you have reserved seats?
@@KenshoQuest thank you for the advice.
Hello I hear that there is also Mount fuji Hakone pass both in one ticket but there is no option like this in the Odakyu website.Did they remove it ? thank you
Here is the Fuji Hakone Pass on the Odakyu website: www.odakyu.jp/english/passes/fujihakone/
Yes, you can do the same for your return trip.
@@KenshoQuest Thank you very much for the advice! Really appreciated!
Hi, is the bus to Gotemba covered for round trip? Thank you.
Yes. The Hakone Free Pass includes unlimited rides on covered transportation. So you can take the bus to Gotemba round trip, or back and forth as many times as you want. 🌸 Heidi
Thanks ❤
Is the pass cheaper buying from train station than from klook?
I believe it’s the same price on Klook as it is at Shinjuku Station. The version on Klook includes round trip from Shinjuku Station. If you buy the version that only covers Hakone Area at Odawara Station, that is 1,100 Yen cheaper. 🌸 Heidi
Hi, may I ask if there’s other transportation option from hakone yumoto directly to the. Boat instead of going on the bus there? Thank you
🌺 Heidi
Is Romance car included in JR pass ?? If not then what is the best route to reach Hakone from Shinjuku on JR pass ?
Here's another video we made with suggested Hakone itineraries: ua-cam.com/video/WsoOBun2X_o/v-deo.html
