I think he used Health Seal. It seals your health at it's usual amount even for 1-health battles and is SUPER GOOD. But you have to play through so many missions to get it.
There is a seal item you can put on to set your health to normal for these fights. Check online where to get it if you have to. There's a toggle while you are over the fight to see what number seal you need.
You get a near death seal from somewhere. I can't think at the moment. It might be somewhere on the Internet. The number has to match the one in the fight.

every super saiyan has a yellow glow over them, it's more noticable on some stages than others

You get an item called Seal Health (something like that) from galaxy mode, then you equip that item to the character and you start with normal health
