    I just commented your other video, and since I start with a comment on this section, let me just repeat it :)
    The whole video is great, but the cross-montage at the end is nothing short of brilliant.
    This show really plunged into our hearts for all the right reasons, I remain convinced you don't come across such works of art that often.
    We were lucky such talent was put at the service of a franchise that so desperatly needed/needs it. Such a shame it turned out to be for a few willing to be de-infantilized only.
    Let's cross our fingers that season 2 is just as good, and that the outpour of love for season 1 will resonate with a broader audience willing to give it the chance it deserves.

      Oppression to them doesn't breed rebellion. Perhaps it once did, but oppression pushed back much harder and won, which ended in dehumanization to the point of making it feel like oppression was normal, which is why many were too afraid to say anything even at home, and didn't dare protest the war Putin started wanting Ukraine back (which has always wanted independence). When you've felt powerless for so long, it's hard to be convinced or even feel convinced to or even let others talk about fighting back when you can't trust your neighbor not to tell authorities what you're planning. It's hard to know who to trust. In contrast, people whose families have lived in the United States for several generations fought for their rights for hundreds of years, (religious freedom, freedom from Britain's attempted rule, various laws over many years because people always question the rules and find ways to work around them for their own gain, etc.), so it's easier to tap into the fight-for-what-is-good "instincts".
      However, as we saw in the several large protests in 2020, there was a lot of unfair, inhumane push-back, such as the use of teargas on peaceful protesters (and yes, there were some violent, thieving protesters, some of which were only there to make them look bad or to take advantage of the protesting to steal -- 2020 was a huge mess), so it's not like it can't happen in democratic countries. All it takes is for an over-militarized (weapons and rigid training or lack of proper training) police force trained to obey beyond moral thought, and authoritarian leaders (be it mayor or higher) to give them whatever orders they want. Just look at what Mayor Jenny did in Seattle, if it hasn't been buried and covered up already.
      Trigger warning, may be upsetting to some people: I still remember the story of a family who had to flee their home one night because Seattle police used too much teargas a few blocks away. It was like fog outside, and it was getting in through unseen cracks in their home. They checked on their baby and found its skin red and having breathing problems. The mom had to pour breastmilk in the baby's eyes as they drove away. The baby recovered later, but it was deeply upsetting how it was a life-threatening situation for the baby from heavy-handed cruelty the police used on a group of protesters (unsure if the group was peaceful or not, I can't remember that part).
      People later called for stricter rules for reducing the amount of militarized tools and weapons in at least some police stations. I don't know how far it improved, or if they received better training on how to be calmer and less trigger happy in tense situations, but I think some officers may have gotten in trouble for ordering attacks on peaceful protesters. I don't remember the details beyond that, as I've always had memory problems (save for random things like this).
      Many of us would rather forget and have both consciously and unconsciously blocked out thoughts of all what happened in 2020, but there was a lot of important stuff that happened. I just wish I could remember more. News media has covered portions of it up and/or left out important details (either maliciously for political reasons, or simply out of shame, or trying not to remember it themselves), so people's personal recollections are what future historians and children and grandchildren are going to heavily depend on for understanding the what's and the how's a small handful of years from now.

Great tribute.

    The key sentences are "The Empire has been choking us so slowly, we're starting not to notice" and "The pace of opression outstrips our ability to understand it".
    It's a clear mirror of our society. The illusion of democracy and the illusion that democracy and freedom are allies.

    • @daniel_wiersma
      @daniel_wiersma 2 місяці тому +5

      I agree on those key sentences and that it is a clear mirror of our society. But I don't agree that democracy is an illusion and that freedom and democracy aren't allies; it is a common goal to shape a world where everybody can be heard while maximising freedom. You have to give in a little bit of freedom, but that actually safeguards the rest of your freedom. Otherwise, inequality will spiral out of control, and you'd be begging to have a little more democracy. Democracy right now isn't perfect, especially when you see the power of regimes that oppose freedom (e.g. russia and wealthy individuals/companies) exploit the mechanisms of democracy. We just need to fix some bugs in the democracy, but that takes time. The alternative really is not better.

    • @ewancarey5847
      @ewancarey5847 2 місяці тому

      @@daniel_wiersma Its just a silken collar. At the end of the day its the same masters holding it. Always has been, always will be. Unless we do something to change it. For example in my country (UK) our top 150 richest families the vast majority of them are still directly Dukes, Duchesses and so forth. We have a litteral State funded Media company that provides news for about 90% of the population. Who doesnt report or reports little on protests that are against the government, or falsely reports them (like last year claiming tens of thousands of protesters at the doctors protest when it was in fact the biggest protest in UK history with almost a Million in attendance). As The famous line goes, "Freedom aint Free". And thats just it. Sad to say, but its true. Both the UK and US have boarderline Undemocratic Voting systems that are First past the Post (the only two countries on earth to have such systems by the way) which nearly ENSURES that there can never ever be any other meaningfull oposition party, (and you know full well those two main parties talk behind closed doors to always keep it that way). Amongst many other things. Democracy can be great, but we dont even live in a true democracy lol. So getting the democratic part right first would be a start lol. God in both the US and UK votes arent even equal, with in the UK it being even worse with the current ruling governments being allowed to redraw boarders freely (as they recently did a few months ago redrawing boarders to be able to move votes around so that they will win more seats in swing areas by including or dis including theirs or opposition parties in other areas to fudge the vote numbers and vote values of opostion parties). Its honestly vile lol. Thinly veiled fraud.

      @@daniel_wiersma ( Oh not to mention that the last TWO british prime ministers werent even voted in by a single person in the UK, love that.)
      So when two of the biggest "free" democracies on earth cant even figure it out, what hope does anyone else have lol.
      The greeks at least had it right, but democracy by lottery is supposedly a stupid idea because you get leaders who arent experts, But honestly in politics you never actually get the experts who rise to the level of being leaders. The experts at economy and such tend to be ministers and stuff because their skill is being really good at that the economy, The ones who rise to the top as leaders are normally those who are experts at politicking, backstabbing, have the biggest wallets/ donors and are the most willing to step on everyone elses toes to get there.
      Or maybe IDK, i study architecture with politics, not politics purely alone so im not even sure if im qualified enough for a full discussion on that lol. But in some ways i guess it would in the very least ensure there is less corruption as every leader is random so no donors or lobbyists can make secret leads with them before their leadership. Its just sad how beaten down people in the UK are. Theyre in that weird area of being too poor to want go out and protest for more than a day or to, But not quite poor and desperate enough to absolutely Have to.
      The UK gov has had them by the balls for some time now, keeping them exactly there in that sweet spot.
      id talk more about this but dont want to spam you xx
      Long story short, The form of democracy we practice in the UK and USA is incredibly susceptible to corruption, the "legal" corruption that is lobbying, It bring the worst people to the top in leadership. And YOU as a citizen only really get to choose between option A and option B, With option candidate A and B being selected undemocratically by a council of people who run each of the respected parties. So maybe you get to choose between shitfuck 1 and fuckshit 2, but at the end of the day they were both placed on the ballot by the people above you and me the average citizen who wanted them to be on that ballot. Likely because they have something to gain out of it, like specific tax cuts or investments in certain industries and the likes.

    • @ewancarey5847
      @ewancarey5847 2 місяці тому +1

      @@daniel_wiersma A good country for an example of good parlimentary system would be Switzerland with their 7 way split council thing they have going on.
      Presidential elections are harder, though id argue America actually has a very good thing going, and is very close to being a shining example, I feel america mostly just needs Electoral reform not system reform. The removal of First past the post would go a long way. Maybe an Irish style 1st 2nd and 3rd choice on the ballot would help a lot. Or maybe a French style "knockout" round election, with a first ballot with all candidates and a 2nd final ballot with the two or three winners from the 1st one. though i lean far more on the irish style being much better.
      As all, hope you have a great day xx
