Glad I found your channel. Do you surf with Ben gravy ever? Anyway, some of your tips from walking on the board helped me a lot. I surf a longboard but I usually just hang out on the outside and go for the biggest waves. I'm not really interested in walking the nose. But I have been lately. I'm 61 years old and your tips helped me a lot yesterday at San Elijo where I usually surf. Lots of longboarders there.
Great to see your finally get some swell. Haven’t had much here at home unfortunately. The turn with the adjustment with the back foot is a great tip, which I will give it a go tomorrow. Keep the great content coming enjoy watching and learning Dan
@@LongboardSessions Well I live in Germany, close to Berlin and surfing here is sadly not possible. Even at the coast in the north the waves usually suck. But I am thinking about studying in Kopenhagen so I might be able to surf in Denmark in the future. Its just that since my first time surfing in Portugal, about 3 months ago, I cannot stop thinking about surfing. After that I went surfing in Norway but now I have no money and time 🤷♂️ Sorry for the small rent. I still love your videos and I hope that one day I will live near the ocean with my own longboard.
man, it is never too late. I know people who started at their 60's who are now good surfers. If you live near a surf spot, just find yourself a board and get in the water
Hey EkG, I had an accident at 45 and was out of the water for 2 years. It's taken me another 2 to get comfortable and for enough to deal with waves around head high but not too much power. Just do what you'd like to do and surf what you want.
Dude love your videos! I seem to get very unlucky with days and it sucks that most of my surf friends only shortboard. Good place to come see some great content and positivity with longboarding. Keep the videos coming, this is awesome!
@@LongboardSessions Actually have lived/surfed all over! I have been moving a lot of the years (comes w/ the job), but NC now. I did get a good surf in over the summer at Island State Beach Park, NJ, but the rules were hard to understand (only surf when lifeguard present, etc.).
@@Aurelian57 ahh I gotcha. Next time you’re in NJ talk to me and I’ll explain this states dumb rules. However, during the summer, just go before 9 am or after 5 pm and there are no rules… except for island beach state park
Thanks Steve! Yea i'm sure it will start to hit during the fall. I'll actually be in virginia for 10 days in a few weeks... but pretty far away from the waves haha! We stay at a house on the potomac every year
@@nathanieldavis3877 yes!! I surf mounmouth county beaches. The wind is one of the most important parts. As long as there’s a little swell and offshore winds you can expect clean lines
Great video as always! Any advice for trying to longboard steeper waves? The waves in your vids always look perfect and mellow/mushy kinda but it seems to usually be a lot steeper anywhere on cape cod regardless of the swell size. I also need to find some of those perfect longboard spots in Rhode Island..
Great question! Actually, in NJ we have very steep waves. Video never really shows how steep or or flat the wave is. However, I do try and find the flattest waves I can. On slightly bigger waves I tend to stick to higher tides which typically makes the wave a little flatter. Also, Iv'e found jetties that tend to have a little more water (the water is deeper) and that helps as well. As for surfing steep waves. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is focus on keeping your inside rail engaged the whole time. Never let your inside rail loose it's lock in the wave. This goes for simply riding the wave, but also during the whole cross stepping process. This could mean you have your feet closer to the inside rail instead of the middle of the board. Let me know if this helps!
Hey I have been watching your videos for a long time. However one thing I kinda noticed that when you are going for a nose ride then have the idea that you wanna do a turn after you get off the nose you get set up way better. Even if it’s a down carve so you get your feet far enough back that you don’t have to always play the guessing game. If this makes sense to you but love your vids keep on doing what you’re doing!
Wow exactly right! I've noticed the same thing. I think it might be my awareness during the cutback.. where as on the takeoff I'm a little too anxious. Iv'e since been doing a little better in this regard.. but still plenty of work to do
Yes, I believe the majority of longboarders do use "calf" leashes. Atleast the ones who plan on noseriding. I'd say it helps a bit as it gets the attachment point farther from your feet. However, you still have to manage the leash properly to prevent tangles and tripping over your leash. Leashes are annoying, but the calf leash is slightly less annoying lol
yo can someone help? i got a 9”2 bing pigformer recently as my first longboard. i tried the 2+1 setup but it felt way to stuff and i was thinking it was the center fin size with the side bites. it’s a pretty large center fin i would say about 8 or 9” do u guys think i should try out a 2+1 setup but replace it with a 6.5” greenrough center fin?
Yes you can try that. Or try taking the sidebites out and see if you like surfing it as a single fin. If you're just using one fin I would keep the larger one in
Some stiffness and extra stability can be helpful of you want to walk the board. If you want to mostly stay near the tail for turns it isn't. Like Brian said, take out the sidebites. If it's still not feeling right then start trying different center fins. With some 2+1 set ups the center fin box is long and you can move the fin forward or back. If your board has that fun box then try that too.
Opening up the shoulders! I looked at my videos, and I see that my side-facing stance is making my cross stepping much harder and is often causing me to fall. That will be my one task to work on next session. Thanks.
I do! I went out yesterday as well. BUT! I tend to avoid the big hollow days as they're not very condusive to longboarding. If the forecast is looking big i'll stick to higher tides and try and find the mushiest wave possible.
@@LongboardSessions I'm still trying to find a good day to make the trek with my longboard from Baltimore. Everytime I check Magic Seaweed it never looks like conditions would be good. Then I see your videos and get huge FOMO (in the best way). I think I eventually need to just go

Sometimes i'll even back up the wind with a regular weather report
