Heat risers and exhaust cross over in the intake manifold. When the heat riser stuck open and or the cross over plugged up it created cold weather running problems. The choke stoves stayed cold so the auto choke stayed on after the engine temp came up to operating temp and the engine would stumble during warm up period, the oil would become fuel laden, and or there would be a ghost engine shut down or very poor running when the carburetor throat iced up in damp cool weather. Usually above freezing but below 50Deg F. By the time the hood got open and the air filter removed the ice would usually be melted and the evidence gone. Then they put the heat stove to the air cleaner snorkel that the customer would flip over the lid to hear the carburetor roar, the sheet metal stove would rust off of the exhaust manifold and the connector tube disappeared, the vacuum system failed or was disabled, or "D" all of the above.

Another old mechanic trick is that they make brass nuts for attaching the cross over pipe to the manifolds. They won't help you this time but if anyone removes the nuts in the future, they will thank you.

As I recall, the trim levels of Chevys were 160, 210, and Bel Air. The Bel Air was the top of the line with the most chrome trim and included contrasting paint in the side trim, usually white in color. This is a 210 model, judging by the chrome trim. The 160 was the base model, almost devoid of chrome trim. One other feature of the 160 was there was only one sun visor inside the car, on the driver’s side of course. Some areas of the country, the 160 could be purchased without a heater, turn signals, and just one tail light. At that time, hand signals were still commonly used to signal turns and stopping. The 1954 Chevy 210 my dad bought new came without an oil filter, but a retrofit kit was available so he added that to his six cylinder motor. Our 1954 Chevy had the two-speed Power Glide transmission. I’m not sure if the 160 trim line was available with a Power Glide transmission because I only saw them with the standard 3 speed on the column. Somebody correct me if you remember differently.

I'm a recently retired mechanic of some 4 decades, and I always figure you can always learn something new. Example: Whenever possible, lose the penetrating oil. I have used virtually every brand out there, from Knocker Loose to Kano Kroil to Brute Force, and some of them are definitely way better than others, but the product I recently started using, which blows every other product away like a rat fart in a Cat 7 hurricane, isn't even a penetrating oil at all. It's CANDLE WAX. You do need to use a heat source, but you don't need to make the parts all that hot, just hot enough to cause the wax to melt and flow around/into the frozen parts. This can de done with something as low heat as a blow drier (not a heat gun, although that would work too). As long as you make the pieces hot enough to melt the wax, it'll get in-between the threads and allow you to take the unit apart without breaking anything. I recently used this technique to disassemble an antique post hole auger (before the modern spade style), which had multiple bits of hardware rusted together. A little bit of heat, a little bit of wax, the correct wrenches, the judicious application of torque, and everything came apart pretty as you please. I've used this on other projects as well, and I am telling you, NO OTHER PRODUCT holds a candle to this (sorry, couldn't resist 😂). But, seriously, try it. It's far more effective, and far less expensive, PLUS you don't end up with multiple empty or partial aerosol cans left laying about the shop due to that one guy who keeps opening fresh cans and never cleans up after himself. Try it. You'll like it.

I watch a.mechanic heat the broken studs up after he removed the manifold the broken studs are exposed. heat the broken studs and drill it out with a 5/32 or so and back it out with an extractor while its still red hot backed it out everytime👍

My grandpa worked in the TWA overhaul base in Kansas City and retired back in 1983. He swore by Knocker Loose and I've got a can of it that I bought through your affiliate link about 2-3 years ago. It's also got a nice smell to it.

Just found your old channel because I had 7.3 questions. Stumbled onto the ChuckE connection which kind of blew my mind and then found your new channel. Good work sir, keep it up. 🤘
As I recall, the trim levels of Chevys were 160, 210, and Bel Air. The Bel Air was the top of the line with the most chrome trim and included contrasting paint in the side trim, usually white in color. This is a 210 model, judging by the chrome trim. The 160 was the base model, almost devoid of chrome trim. One other feature of the 160 was there was only one sun visor inside the car, on the driver’s side of course. Some areas of the country, the 160 could be purchased without a heater, turn signals, and just one tail light. At that time, hand signals were still commonly used to signal turns and stopping. The 1954 Chevy 210 my dad bought new came without an oil filter, but a retrofit kit was available so he added that to his six cylinder motor. Our 1954 Chevy had the two-speed Power Glide transmission. I’m not sure if the 160 trim line was available with a Power Glide transmission because I only saw them with the standard 3 speed on the column. Somebody correct me if you remember differently.

I'm a recently retired mechanic of some 4 decades, and I always figure you can always learn something new.
Example:
Whenever possible, lose the penetrating oil. I have used virtually every brand out there, from Knocker Loose to Kano Kroil to Brute Force, and some of them are definitely way better than others, but the product I recently started using, which blows every other product away like a rat fart in a Cat 7 hurricane, isn't even a penetrating oil at all.
It's CANDLE WAX.
You do need to use a heat source, but you don't need to make the parts all that hot, just hot enough to cause the wax to melt and flow around/into the frozen parts. This can de done with something as low heat as a blow drier (not a heat gun, although that would work too).
As long as you make the pieces hot enough to melt the wax, it'll get in-between the threads and allow you to take the unit apart without breaking anything.
I recently used this technique to disassemble an antique post hole auger (before the modern spade style), which had multiple bits of hardware rusted together. A little bit of heat, a little bit of wax, the correct wrenches, the judicious application of torque, and everything came apart pretty as you please.
I've used this on other projects as well, and I am telling you, NO OTHER PRODUCT holds a candle to this (sorry, couldn't resist 😂). But, seriously, try it. It's far more effective, and far less expensive, PLUS you don't end up with multiple empty or partial aerosol cans left laying about the shop due to that one guy who keeps opening fresh cans and never cleans up after himself.
Try it.

I watch a.mechanic heat the broken studs up after he removed the manifold the broken studs are exposed. heat the broken studs and drill it out with a 5/32 or so and back it out with an extractor while its still red hot backed it out everytime👍
