Nottingham Council leader is on £182,000 pa,my own Council chief is on £149.000 with 5 staff members on £100,000 or more.
HMRC is also a corporation and i wrote to them stating i had no contract and was unwilling to pay them.
    They ignored this,but i have issued a complaint .
It's a pity Richard Vobes does nothing but stir people up ,when he has all the contacts to actually form a group that could make a difference.
Had i been backed by 100,000 people HMRC would have been forced to think differently.

There are now two confirmed councils on the verge of bankruptcy and I wonder how many more there are in the country that are keeping financial problems quiet at the moment. If you look at what the council tax is supposed to be used for, all these services have been stripped down as much as possible. I wonder just how much is down to bad investment and how much is due to skimming the top off the pot with stupidly high wages and un needy red tape administration along with vastly overpriced jobs for friends. Trust in the ruling bodies of the country is flailing badly when you look at what is happening on a daily basis I should imagine.

What happens is that they cannot satisfy their budget with the income, so they have to resort to providing only the services they are required to provide by law, this means that everything else ceases to function. The word bankrupt is used as a convenient way to describe to the general public the state of the finances. The Council will declare a Section 114 provision to the Govt that it can't meet its budget with its income and the Govt can advise certain courses of action, ultimately even taking over the running of the Council itself. They still have a duty to provide the services they must by law and collect Council rates.
There are other public bodies that would be considered bankrupt in the private sector such as a great many of the Health Trusts but similarly they cannot become bankrupt because they are performing a public duty that cannot be done otherwise.

Here's a question. If your council becomes bankrupt, does that mean you should cancel your payments for council tax. Let's face it, if a business becomes insolvent, the first thing you would do is stop paying that business as you don't expect that business to provide the services you have been paying for!

Not another one. I live near Nottingham. I'm shocked but after Birmingham, there's definitely something wrong. The question now is, what happens now?. Looks like the NHS, Money not going to where it's needed most..I recall reading about, Sheffield Council's, spending on drinks for staff, £28,000 for the year, that was in the early '90s. My rent went up suddenly, to £80 more. My friend lives in a nice Nottinghamshire village. No fire service Police, ambulance, not even a shop. But their council tax is sky-high. As for bedroom tax, Why do some get away with paying, if it's considered a prayer room?. I rang them, and asked if I could do the same, but they said no?. I nearly took a sledgehammer and knocked one of my walls down. The truth is, we just have too many people in the country, and the system can't cope.
As for Robin Hood energy, I used a charity non-profit, utility company years ago, run by a millionaire, fed up, with utility companies ripping People off with High bills, to please greedy shareholders and the standing charge. It was the cheapest company out there. They Let Robin Hood energy run on their behalf, But the government, told them if they didn't, introduce a standing charge, they'd close them down, and that's what happened sadly. Just a Mayors banquet, costs thousands, just for the flower display, I knew someone who did them.
Everything seems to be corrupt these days, the big cats, get the cream, as always. Thank you for making me aware of this story Andy.

I worked in local government finance for 20+ years at a large southern city. At that time 75% of the funding came from central government (income tax). The council tax paid by city residents was only 25% of the funding.
Year after year central government cut its funding, insisting that we make economic savings. That can only continue so long.
You also have to bear in mind that funding for improvement works like expanding schools, new roads, rebuilding etc. can’t be used for everyday services like looking after the elderly.
Say a council spends a million pounds on its day to day services, a 2% cut in the £75m government funding would reduce its income by £1.5m
To recover this by increasing the council tax of £25m would mean an increase of 6%. In addition to this there would need to be an increase to reflect inflation in the cost of providing services.
For many years Councils were limited to how much they could increase the council tax and therefore services have been cut to the bone.
It’s easy to see why councils are struggling to make ends meet. They are being given legal responsibilities to provide more services but not adequate extra funding. Birmingham and Nottingham are just the tip of the iceberg and I’m afraid to say more councils will follow.

Hull certainly is also, and is the reason I've withheld paying council tax.
I have no contract with the company who is running hull, and won't be paying until the money goes to improving my city of hull.
Not paid it since 2018 and the last bailiff that attended my house earlier this year lasted all of 2 mins before making his exit from my property, he looked rather bemused when he said are you Richard Bartlett and I replied "who I am is non of your business" he went to hand me a piece of paper and before fully holding the paper out he himself said "I guess your not taking this either", I replied no and that was it, or so he thought, with my confidence now fully up that I had him where I wanted him, I stopped him from walking away and gave him a ten minute lecture about him recording the conversation and why he was breaking rhe law as I live down an avenue with no public thoroughfare.

Thurrock hit problems after a solar farm investment scheme failed to deliver, Nottingham was Robin Hood Energy and many of the others have made bad financial decisions - often about council buildings. All local authorities face challenges, but it is often the big "vanity" projects that has tipped them over the edge. Although Birmingham had a massive gender pay gap bill, they also blew £100m on an underperforming IT project, again they shouldn't have done this. I really cannot see how their IT needs a bespoke system along with many of the others doing the same. Pick the best and scrap the rest.

Will the Chief Officers immediately be sacked (without payoffs) for failing in there’re duties? Will Chief Officers over generous Pension Pots be seized to pay back debt? Sell off all the luxurious council offices and put the staff in Port-a Cabins. Scale back the gravy train including any payments to Councillors for attending meetings. That will soon sort out the finance.

Dont confuse a few badly run Councils with all the rest. If you want to pay a monthly fee to empty your bins, the electricity bills for the lights outside your house, school fees, leave anyone vulnerable to survive on their own, let the green spaces be built on because anyone can build whatever they want without planning permission, no road maintenance no traffic lights or any other safety feature, town centres to become no go areas because of beggars and drug addicts and so on then abolish them and live the dream of a US life style.

All these local councillors will either be out of a job and in the same boat as us, or they will be working for the government on a lower wage but with little control or assistance for their residents?
