Have you tried giving power only to the speed controller card using a power supple and then adjusting the pot using the markers below the floppy drive? Under incandescent you will have a very good visual adjustment of the motor speed. The markers show the adjustments to 60 or 50 hertz. You can even swap out a speed controller card from an apple II floppy if yours is bad.
Haha, yeah it doesn't really help apart from showing that it can make a slight difference. I wanted to link to forum that I read it on, but now I cannot find it. I did end up pulling the head out just to make sure the break wan't between where the thin coil wire enters the actual head but no luck - it's broken somewhere deep inside, and that's near impossible to repair.
My 1541c seemed to have a lot of failing disks and "new" disks that wouldn't format. I just ran that diagnostic from my sd2iec and the alignment check was coming back with 99s and 100s and the speed test was sitting at 300.2. That would be around normal?
Hey Rob, I assume you mean blank rom cart. You will need to first find or put together a cartridge PCB - google versacart, and then program the rom image to an EPROM with something like the minipro tl866. By the sounds of it you don't already have these things so my suggestion would be to search on eBay for 1541 diagnostic cartridge. Unless you plan on making your own cartridges, it's much easier and faster to find a pre-made one

i see your link to the diagnostic rom image, how do write things to a cartridge ? where do i get a black rom cart ?

The spindle spinning when you insert a disk is normal and expected behaviour.
Dump the 6522s and jam in brand spanking new W65C22N6TPG-14. $10 each.
