This is the very definition of why we practice. Good show!
Nice setup! Same blind I use for Deer hunting. (N8KC)
I operated from frozen lake Wilhelm in my ice fishing tent and did my first ever POTA activation. Caught some fish too.
Nice. Those ice fishing tents are probably the ideal portable shelter.
1. Amateur radio is all about having fun. If you liked your Sunday setup better, power to you. 2. You are brave for working out in the snow, but it will prepare you incase you have to do so for an emergency. 3. I don't know who had more fun, you or your dog! 4. That woodshed of yours would also make a good operating position. 73
Thanks for watching. He loves the outdoors no matter what the weather. I do have some much large tents, heater, propane tanks, generator, etc for emergencies or big events with more people. I am the Emergency Coordinator for my county. I like being highly mobile though.
Great video. I'm really enjoying watching all these WFD set ups. 73 de Colin
Hi Tom,
Great video. Looks like you and Auggie had fun. Saw a few glimpses of the house. Looks nice. Wish I had a piece of land like yours. Only 1/3 acre on a corner plot here, with about four times the sidewalk to shovel than my neighbors. On your EFHW. they recommend a counterpoise of 0.05 wavelength. For 40m that's 7 ft and on 20m 3.5 ft. Any longer it may hurt than help. You and the family stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Hi Don, I've tried those length couterpoise and didn't notice any difference. I even tried different lengths of coax, but swr doesn't seem to change. The height above the ground seems to make the biggest difference. Thanks
1O in EPA near Philly. Set up in a tent in my backyard. Went more contest oriented with laptop, N1MM+, RigBlaster for voice keying and a WinKeyer for CW. Definitely more work to take down in the snow which was starting to get heavy at WFD close.
You might have heard it hitting the tarp, but it was freezing rain here. We didn't get the bulk of our snow until Sunday night. Thanks for watching.
Fantastic. I was 1O right down the road in Greensburg. Chilly but fun weekend. 73 de W3OY.
Notice you had the end fed antenna hanging with the matchbox hanging down. Does having the matchbox at the top or bottom make a difference in performance?
Most of your power radiates closer to the feed point, so the higher it is the better, from my understanding. My home antenna is a horizontal endfed with the feed point about 35 feet off the ground. Setting up that way is harder to do when you are portable as it means you have to have an attachment point on each end and longer coax.
Found your channel today, great content. Was wondering about " One Oscar" " One Hotel" "One Mike" Is this to state you are outside/home/mobile? Had not heard theses before during field day. Usually just grid squares etc... Thanks in advance.
Hi. For this event, the exchange was your call, number of operators (one), (O)outdoors, (I) indoors, (H) home, and then your state. The rules for this event can be found here www.winterfieldday.com/ thanks for watching.
@@TangoOscarMikeN3WS got it... thanks. Sounds like something I am interested in. Hoping to have some radio vids up soon, along with my fishing and metal detecting hobbies. If you get a chance, check out a couple of videos. LoneStar Renegade tv

I think your "goofy" hat was backwards.
You might be right. I never saw myself in it before. I look like someone in a Monty Python movie.
FB on your tarp setup. DE WA1KLI
What's in your chest rig, Tom? You guys are nuts living in those temps. Very nice WFD station. This video was a lot of fun. I found that the little magnetic Bluetooth keyboards that pair with the iPad Mini works pretty well, especially if you have fat fingers like I do. ;-)
Tom, you're right. It seems more fun when you ditch all the gear. I found that I have even more fun when I live the GoPro/iPhone at home and don't film. You?
It's a Hill People Gear Recon. It has a dedicated pew area. If I had to buy it over again I'd probably go with the heavy recon bag, for just a little more space. I think that was one of the first times I used the Raspberry PI in the field that made me think that it could actually become a permanent part of my kit. Have you read The Partisan Operator Journals?
Yes. The less complicated it becomes the more fun it is. I really don't mind the camera though. Once I start operating I forget that I'm recording sometimes.
