    AK headspacing should be set "tight" on a go-gauge when first built. There is some setback that occurs after the first few rounds fired through it. If you are a hair loose to start with it might become unacceptable at this point and in the future downright unsafe to shoot with a lot of rounds fired through it. I see the logic and technical strategy/theory setting it a tad on the tight side to start with.

    This is a good American style standards of head space.
    The Soviet and Russian manual of arms lists a given amount of force to close the bolt in Kilograms.
    And again while this is a perfectly safe standard to check to. It is not as rough and wide as the Soviet standard.

      @wouter0388 4 роки тому +2

      They mention setting their headspace very tightly and then you see pictures online of the 5.45 rifles peening the chamber and bolt face how is this good American standard?
      Why even bother with good American standard when people have been making these rifles for years and know what they are doing?

    • @wouter0388
      @wouter0388 4 роки тому

      @AK47 KUSSSHH No i understand why American companies make AK's i just dont understand why they try and develop their own practices when it has already been figured out. This is the same nonsense as their forged trunnions or their tuned pistons, they think they know better than years of comblock production.

      The gauges are caliber specific. The manufacturer may differ, but you can use a SAAMI 7.62x29mm gauge or a CIP 7.62x39mm gauge on a Zastava, PSAK, WASR, and so on, as long as the rifle is chambered in 7.62x39mm. There are separate gauges for 5.45x39mm and 5.56x45mm AKs

    So when it doesn’t close on the no go, what does that mean?

    • @gscotty311
      @gscotty311 Рік тому

      Means it's properly headspaced...after it's shown it closes on go gauge of course. If it closes on a go AND a no go go, it's either a heavily used rifle that's increased headspace from wear or it's a rifle new or old that's had the barrel improperly seated to the action with excessive headspace. Closing on a no go isn't dangerous necessarily but, should be looked at for fixing. Closing on 'field gauge' is dangerous headspace.

    So non PSA AK question but I do own one (replaced the following CA AK with one gladly) how much play should the bolt have without any cartridge in the chamber? As in normally assembled rifle without a chambered round nor a magazine, from the magazine well 'play' in the bolt. My old AK has ~0.75mm of play (casted RAS47) with obvious cam channel and locking lug deformation (~5k rounds in the last 3.5 years) and my less than a few months old PSA AK with ~1500 rounds through her has basically no play. As well I've checked out the local gun range's Romanian 'RPK' that's a machine gun and it has what was at least 2mm of bolt play. Is this a somewhat useful way of gauging headspace? Its only testing locking lug deformation and/either cam channel deformation but I feel it gives some useful headspace 'gauge' without having a set.
