I’m glad y’all have a little break in the weather . My Apiary passed health inspection today . 22 five frame nucs are building up and will be sold next month . Prince George, Virginia USA . Man it’s 78° f .
You are so right about the pollen patties with the rocket fuel in it. The bees were devouring it even with maple pollen coming in. When we get a cold snap or rain and the bees can't fly they have the patties and syrup. They don't miss a beat.
I actually add the medication with my own version of rocket fuel right into the pollen patties ....likewise my syrup is medicated. I have a 2000 gallon converted milk tank that is steam heated where I can heat the syrup also...Wisconsin can be as cold as Manitoba. I say this sitting down in my Condo in Costa Rica with the Air Con on full blast today, but thinking about you. I usually don't feed any liquid when it cold, to avoid cold shock drowning, but I do heat the syrup when it's going to be risk of cooler temperatures, otherwise I only feed sugar pollen sub patties
When the cake comes out of the oven, I want my slice thick with extra whipped cream on top....and drizzled with honey. By the way, love the receipt. Looking good. God's peace brother.
You want to watch out for those large decadent slices of cake Mr. Ed, otherwise you might have more in common with the Rooster than just bees, you might even end up with watermelon hands!
Oh and get ready to get real busy if you're anything like down here in Bismarck is going to be absolutely zero in between!!! I literally have parts of my yard that are 3ft deep in snow on the leve,l not a drift just on the level I also have Parts in my yard that are wide open and now that are freaking with new green grass and flowers starting to pop, and let's be clear these are not tulips this is native flowers! so there is going to be no spring ......absolutely no in-between full on winter to full-on summer..... here we go!!! Good luck it's going to be a klusterfuk one way or the other just like this entire winter has been.
Everything you can do has been done! Nice job! They are looking great! You’ve been here many times with the up and down spring weather. It is what it is!🤷🏼♂️😎💪🏻🙌🐝
Was watching new channel I found under Canadian bee keepers last night can tell he's been following you pretty close .. looks like he's over in Alberta runs like 1200 and has big pollen patty operation .. they harvest a lot pollen and use it for the Patty they sell.. 15% real pollen in they're mix . Bunch of Filipino guys running it ..
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog thought the area looked the same.. he said Albert about something maybe patty order .. wish he show how that pollen trap is built.. probably could just ask him seems like a nice guy like that
It's crazy how different beekeeping in canada is. Here in Germany, the beez flew even on 01.01.23! It was good weather and they could all poop. Now, since 2 weeks its absolutely gorgeus, +10 - +15°C, and everything starts blooming. Now the maples and cherrys are flowering crazy. And they smell so wonderful! so delicious! In some days the apples will bloom, and after 1-2 weeks our canola. I am getting a steady honeyflow until June. Then I can move my beez to get the acacia, or I get a small lack. After that honeydew or limewood! We have very much limewood here in Germany. hundreds of limewoods are planted next to main roads. But not all my colonies are in good shape, 2 weeks ago some had just 2 brood frames, while some others had 8! Tomorrow I will again equalize and hope for a good honey flow, because all starts to bloomin right now. Oh, and you didn't got kicked out of the house this morning, did you? xD God bless you and your beeeeezzzzz
Ian what type of syrup do you use? I find our HFCS 55 crystallizes pretty quickly in our un heated warehouse. Wondered if you ran into any problems with your outdoor storage tank
Crazy how the weather changed. 4 days of over 80 deg here. Had to shed the bee suit or die in a puddle of sweat at 86 just 2 days ago.. Snow storm last night. If I struggle to acclimate it must be really a task for my bees!
Ian I have an idea for you related to one of your recent videos when you took a snow blower to your bee yards. You inadvertently blew some grass and soil over on the snow layer which prevented bees from dying on the snow in those areas. Next year get a straw chopper/spreader and lay down an even layer of straw over the snow all the way around the edges of your yards. I don't know if the money and labor costs would make sense, but it might be an interesting idea.
Cold weather brooding again indeed. I have early queens coming. Going to have to make insulated nucs. I had a lot of chilled brood last year.👎 Glad to see you are getting the syrup out.👍
It’s been a rat race here in southern Michigan I been flying around getting the girls ready for the cold setback with feed on all hives… I am sure the girls are MORE flustered with this cool down as me.. 😡😡 can break open the brood boxes an do anymore inspections with this cold moving in … Crazy as it sounds?? Last night I walked out side at 1 a.m. in a bloody T shirt 👕 an filled the wood boiler up an this morning? WTH? Winter coat weather then rain an cold wind. Tonight? Just went out ( about same time) stocking hat winter coat an gloves😮 I am ready to get off this roller coaster weather!!! But your girls are looking great!!!!!
I got into our hives while we had the nice weather and all 4 are looking really strong, capped brood and larva and the lightest hive still has at least 5 full frames of honey and all of them were crawling with bees and packing in the pollen, only two hives had any kind of moisture issue which I think is what killed my hives last year. The weather's now back to seasonally appropriate for Ontario but at least they got their cleansing flights and a chance to get some pollen. We used the fancy Hive Alive fondant packs on top of all of them and everyone's much healthier than my two hives that died out in April last year, instead of pooping all on and around the hives, they went all the way around to the front of the house to get Mom's new white car! I should be able to split at least two of them when it warms up for real!
I've got about the same crappy weather forecast as you do. Not very promising. I open fed an average of 1 gal of one to one and a lb of dry pollen sub last week when it was warm. Also put Global 15% patties with Apis Biologic so hopefully they have enough food to get them to warmer weather. I got 4 inches of snow Sunday, guess you missed it. Have a good week Ian.
hello friend, I really appreciate your work and your dedication in maintaining this whole operation of bees, a doubt, do you use sugar as sucrose or invert sugar??
What are you feeding then? 1:1? 2:1? Sucrose or fructose? And is that a 2 gallon pail or 1 gallon? Lol sorry hard to tell in the video. Thanks for all you’re videos!
The view of all the hives in that opening is beyond cool! The driver's seat on your truck reminds me of all the farm trucks I was around when I was a kid. Lot's of foam showing, and a rug to sit on. Weather conditions are similar here in Baudette. But, as long as you provide them what they need, the bees are moving forward!
Hello Ian. I am using the advice of the king Bib Binnie, adding one tea spoon of bleach to each one gallon of sugar syrup. It really elongated the life span of the syrup special for weak colonies who need more time to take the whole syrup. Sincerely Mohammad
Your close. It's been a whacky year here in the States. But it looks like your getting a jump on it this year. Your hives look healthy and the numbers seem to be really good for most of them. How long until you requeen them?

I run heavy sucrose. I granulated solid this winter but the sun worked on it for a week and its good as gold except for 3" on the bottom.

If I wore black glasses like that my eyes would be swollen shut!
What mite medication do you put down now? Does anyone ever help you besides Kari?
Great intro...thanks
Cold weather rearing is I'm guessing substantially better than floating Hives on some random ass coteaux Creek! LOL
Ian how thick is you buck syrup? Nice to see you out and feeding!
I’m feeling heavy
What are the ingredients for the pancakes, please?

What syrup are you using at this time of year? 1:1?
Heavy Sucrose
No mites on those bees
Thank you for the close-ups of never seen them that close and your apiary❤❤
amazed that the extra day light those honey bees catch right up by the end of the season
Nice video 👍👍👍👍❤️❤️
I hope with all my heart to visit you

To fit plastic hoses better to use boiling water than flame!
