To everyone who is watching this video 5 years after I uploaded...I am planning a follow up video as I still own this E55. A lot of my opinions have changed and I think this video is pretty cringe at this point. 🤣Thanks for your comments! If you're looking to buy one, I would love to answer your questions.
I own the w210 1996 E50 AMG. 1st gen w210. It's an amazing car. A collectors car now too! it's incredible. A true V8 muscle car! The E55 isn't as desirable. too many produced and poor quality issues as compared to the E50.
When E55 was made, it was as fast as that time Corvette's, which was fast for it's time. Sure it's not as fast as today's V8 engines but that's natural. You won't do very fast 0-60 times, even though I think around 5 seconds is pretty fast for today's car. But it comes alive, as you said, when the speed is up and it starts to pull. I've seen some videos of other E55 AMG's without limiter pulling up to 186 mph easily. Modded or not, still for that age v8 and transmission those speeds are enormous. And that transmission is for it's age smooth as I have one w210 myself. It's just shame that Mercedes used two different metals when building the w210 cars, mixing good metal with bad quality metal to bring down the cost of the car. And the paint job has some technical issues also, which give a good place for a rust to grow up. Technically durable beasts otherwise.
Speed and styling are always going to be subjective and relative, but c'mon sub 5 sec 0-60 and 13s 1/4 mile is objectively quicker than about 75-80% of MY2022 cars sold today. That is seriously impressive for a two and a half decade old sedan! And as far as styling, if you polled the average AMG enthusiast and asked them to rate this compared to the current day w213 E63, I can safely guarantee at least half of them would prefer the understated, classic, blocky look of this w210 E55.
I own/operate an E430 and have no problem leaving most in the dust, and if a tail gate'r, Ill take em into some chicanes to see if they can follow when i speed up - I have many cars, nothing exotic, but nothing compares with my E430 -
I shot this video about 5 years ago and I have to say a lot of my opinions have changed. I still own this car and I plan to make a follow up video to address a lot of the comments I have gotten here over the years. I own an E430 wagon now as well and the E55 is quite a bit faster.
I take this car over the new ones. These are classic Mercedes Benz as long as you don’t cheap on your maintenance. For someone who bought this car doesn’t know so much about the history of these cars. At that time of these cars came were up to Ferrari, E39, and Corvettes. To compare these cars to a Hyundai is just ignorance. Learn about the AMG brand before making a video about a pure breed AMG. Btw Mercedes Benz didn’t have anything to do with these cars, they only gave them the badge but the whole W210 AMG was completely separated. Sorry but comparing these cars with cheap Asian cars is just disgraceful!
Mercedes gave them the chassis, sure. AMG bored and stroked a 4.3 and tuned it, and slapped a beefed up and tuned 722.6. This car was revolutionary for the time. I made the comparison to a Hyundai simply to illustrate that this car is faster than any economy car even today. But it’s not a fast car “by today’s standards”. I love this E55 and I still have it even after making this video 3 years ago. I take very good care of it and it’s been a great car. Planning on making an updated video to this soon. I also bought some Kleemann headers so that will be fun.
I don’t think they brought the wagon version of the E55 AMG in the US. On the BMW E39 the dash pixels go away after a while, I think the Merc is built better overall. But both cars are great
Mine is 2001 just hit 180K miles. I love this car it’s been my daily driver for almost two years and beside gas mileage everything is perfect for a daily car.
My 208 55 sat for 10 years cause it needed new tires, finally got it into the shop, 5k in fixes, it’ll be back on the road in a week, very excited, too bad there aren’t much mods for these cars anymore, especially the 208 chassis
W210s all around are cheap. I don't understand why people aren't thrilled about the styling of this era E class. My E320 4Matic does everything I expect out of a car and more. Certainly more comfortable on a road trip than my E46 coupe.
Had one, it ate the real tires like they were free... Besides that it was an Awesome car. They do rust though so unless you live in a dry state, watch out for that
I had my suspension rebuilt and it stopped eating my rear tires thankfully. I live in the Pacific Northwest and rust is not an issue. I currently own 4 W210s and none of them have rust thankfully!
In my opinion the e39 is just better, it isn’t too unreliable either, especially compared to other M cars. Still this car is cheaper so I would still love to own it. HOPEFULLY BOTH someday lol.
great vlog But I think, my friend, that there's something wrong with the accelerator pedal because mine is hard to move with it pushing slowly from a standstill like a scald.
During the pandemic, there was a 1 owner, garage kept example for sale near me with over 400k miles on it. M cars of this vintage are worth 5x's what AMG's of this vintage are because the average person is a child, regardless of age. I love M cars also, but when it comes to daily usability & build quality it's not even close in any regard.
I’ve had the car for 4 and a half years and driven 40k miles. I definitely want something faster, but I can’t bring myself to sell this car. It has been bullet proof, fun and people love this car.
Are you sure that the car takes off in first gear? If you drive the 722.6 transmission soft the software will let you take off in second gear. Besides that the engine will not deliver full power in first gear due excessive transmission wear.
Yes. It takes off in first when set to "S" on the gear selector. It takes off in second when set to "W". I'm not sure that claim is true. The 722.6 in the 210 E55 is way more transmission than that stock 5.4l needs.
@@TheAutoInformant W = Winter, S = Sommer (summer). In S mode (NOT sport!) It will take off in second gear to reduce torque and therefore wheelspin. But if you use your kickdown at standstill in S mode the transmission will first shift to first en then take off.
@@TheAutoInformant the E55 is equipped with the 722.636 W5A transmission. It can handle a maximum torque of 580Nm. This transmission (with different gear ratio’s) is also used in the Sl600 and E320cdi (and many more others)
Haha I have this car and you basically summed it up. But I love my E55! Id love to see more vids on this car in the future please! Let me know if you have any questions form a 2 year owner, Id be more than happy to help you.
Unsung Automobile - I have a little over 140k it’s my daily driver. I’ve had to fix a few moderate things over time but it feels good putting money into it. Can’t really describe it. I will definitely check out that playlist! Thanks
Unsung Automobile I got mine with 124k miles what a coincidence. If you take care of this car it will take care of you. Dm me if you have any questions. I’d recommend replacing the trans conductor plate and adapter and the stop lamp switch. These are good for new owners
Those are on the short list for sure. This is my third W210 (98 E320, 01 E430 4MATIC). I don't plan on keeping this as my daily driver (new job will give me a work truck) so hopefully when I get back to making decent money I can turn this into a mini project car. Not trying to restore but want to replace all suspension components and take care of all the preventative maintenance as well as tidy up the paint and maybe restore the wheels.
I guess the 'uninspiring' appearance is done on purpose. The hand built engine is also the purpose. I love the W124 and W211 in almost all versions :-)
The person making the video is in America. He probably isn't familiar with non US models. I know I am not. Too many different versions for the worldwide markets, tons of other engine choices, lots of diesel options from Mercedes that we cant' get here. Way too many cars to keep track of besides all the versions we can get in the US.

About the 40 mph, and Torque Converter - the car learns your driving habits - you can teach it -

A tuned TDI golf/jetta is pretty niche and a lil torque daily beast with crazy mpg's for how it drives
Just to mention a Hyundai Elantra prefacing an AMG is quite the curiosity to me. Moisturize your leather dude.
