Turns out the USS Endeavor is the name of a ship from Star Trek as well as the small floating dry dock from WW2. You learn something new every day.
Wasn’t there also a space structure called the Endeavor that had something to do with the Hubble Telescope? I vaguely remember learning about it in school
@@collectivelykris I think it was a shuttle that got astronauts up to it for service or something. I guess “Endeavor” is a pretty good name.
The Shuttle Orbiter is actually named Endeavour after the British ship the HMS Endeavour hence the British spelling. The HMS Endeavour was the ship Capitain James Cook sailed in to achieve first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. Whether that’s a good thing or not I’ll let you all decide for yourself. Although I believe the HMS Discovery (also has a Shuttle Orbiter named for it) was the one to do the voyage to New Zealand and Hawai’i.

Endeavour conducted the first servicing mission 2 years later to fix a massive flaw in the main mirror that caused all the images Hubble too to be blurry. Discovery then serviced Hubble again in 1997 and added two new instruments which extended Hubbles range and composite imaging quality. A more general servicing mission was planned for 2000 where repairs and minor upgrades were planned. However in early 1999 a failure in the gyro system was found and in late 1999 an emergency mission was flown by Discovery to repair the stabilizer gyroscopes when 4 of the 6 on board had failed. The repairs and upgrades went smoothly although not all Of the planned servicing was completed. This mission holds the world record for fastest planned space mission with a prep time of just 207 days. In 2002 the second portion of the original servicing mission was flown by Space Shuttle Columbia (this was her last successful mission before she exploded during Reentry of STS-107) this mission added arguably the most important addition to Hubble in the ACS short for Advanced Camera for Surveys, alongside the completion the remainder of the scheduled maintenance. The 5th and final Servicing mission was originally Scheduled for early 2005 but was initially canceled due to safety concerns i. The wake of the aforementioned loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia during the reentry of STS-107 on February 1st 2003. In October of 2006 the mission was Reinstated with a planned launch date in October of 2008 but was subsequently delayed by a failure in the science instrument command suite. The mission was flown in mid May of 2009 and breathed new life into the Hubble Space Telescope. Astronauts installed two new scientific instruments - the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) and Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3). Two failed instruments, the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), were brought back to life by the first ever on-orbit repairs. These efforts brought Hubble to the apex of its scientific capabilities. In an effort prolong Hubble's life(as no more missions can be conducted due to the cancellation of the Shuttle Program), astronauts installed new batteries, new gyroscopes, a new science computer, a refurbished fine guidance sensor, and new insulation on three electronics bays.
