Ride the Rails in Real-time: • CTA's Ride the Rails: ...
Ride the Rails in Time-lapse: • CTA's Ride the Rails: ...
The CTA has more than 224 miles of railroad tracks across Chicago and surrounding suburbs, serving the agency's eight rail lines. In an average weekday, there are about 2,200 train trips making stops at the system's 145 rail stations. For more than 100 years, the 'L' has offered a unique perspective of Chicago.
In the first-ever documentation of its kind, the CTA has created a real-time ride along the length of each rail line. Shot in HD, you can now experience the 'L' like never before from the vantage point of the rail operator. You can even transfer between lines.
Hop aboard, and enjoy the ride.

Sure has changed a lot since 1995. Love what was done to the Subway. Used to be all dirt and rock. Lots of new streets crossing Dan Ryan. Lovely..
For me a lot from '73.
Before we finally moved to the North side, I had to take the Red Line from 95th all the way to Berwyn to get to high school at Northside Prep and the reverse to head back home. It was a looong ride.
A very looooog ride, especially in the Winter.

Who ever came up with the idea to do this is brilliant!
Our trains are so unique in sound .
I've watched quite a few of these excellent videos.. I still can't believe people live, eat dinner and sleep within feet of a train going 55-70 mph.
I don't live and sleep within feet of the train, but I have gone to restaurants within feet of the train. It can be pretty loud if there are no windows or anything to block the noise. If there are, it usually isnt bad at all.
After a while you don't even notice it.

Jake: "How often does the train go by?"
Elwood: "So often you won't notice it."
Since a few days I'm watching this videos of the different lines and I love it so much. It's very relaxing to me. And I like the sound the train makes. Now I want to go to Chicago.

This is really cool. My grandma used to take me on this line when I was a
kid. I always liked going by Wrigley, and then the part where you go
underground.
The “L Train” reminds me of that old but classic movie 12 Angry Men. Every time I hear L train so many scenes flash in front of me, great motion picture.
For all you non-Chicagoans, at 15:00 is Graceland Cemetery, where many famous, historical figures are "listening" to the noisy train as it passes: these include athletes (boxers Jack Johnson, Bob Fitzsimmons, BearDoug Buffone, Cub Ernie Banks), industrialists (Swift and Armour [meats], Potter Palmer [real estate], Kimball [pianos], Cyrus McCormick [farm tools], politicans (Gov Altgeld), cops (Pinkerton), architects (Mies Van der Rohe, Louis Sullivan), and entertainment figures [film critic Roger Ebert], Charles Dicken's brother, and many others. RIP
Dear CTA Connections: Very awesome videos of your subway system and making out like I'm in Chicago right now riding the rails. I never been to Chicago and feel like I'm there right now. I am noticing that the areas and stations are so laid back and even downtown seems quiet. Nothing like New York. Even your trains look nice as well as stations. If I ever get the miracle of retirement for the future, think I'd like to live there. I heard it's cheaper living there than NY and I notice the neighborhoods are similar like Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, NY. Once again I commend you for creating these wonderful videos and best wishes to all at the CTA.
trust me you don't. i was at howard station going to the cubs game and these 2 guys were drinking on the train and smoking on the station, and trust me, they weren't cigarettes, and i heard one of them say he had a gun to the other. but if you think about it you can't let 2 people ruin your attitude towards something
You want to see cool trains and rides? Search for the Japanese front views. Really modern, the regular people movers like these, daily commuters. A lot of different styles.Their Air Port busses are really nice. Also, look for the number 7 A train in NY "A" train, a 31 mile trip to downtown.
Once it's extended south to 130th, this will have to be updated
And I wish they would use the extension tunnels on the blue line. And use that subway station to nowhere. Anew whole line would be awesome! Yes its cheaper to keep building line's and extensions above ground, but lookup at the upkeep. Trash removal, constant rust, rivets, etc. Underground tube much less upkeep. I love Chicago. And please make the Brown line add 2 or 3 stops and make it 24 hours!
The proposal is now defunct.
One thing to be careful when you watch this. When the train goes underground don't stare too long as it's going through the tunnel. It's really hypnotic. Excellent video by the way!
It's not a good idea, to have each track in it's own tunnel tube. I heard, that this is stress to the drivers.
I thought the same! I wonder if it's the same effect in person. If so, bless the drivers cause that's a lot to endure... on your feet... over and over again.
I used to rid a lot in the '50s and sir in the last car back window seat. Whenever the train came to a stop the tracks seemed to move backwards, same in the front. I never thought of the engineer.
Thank you so much for that wonderful ride!
the red line has the worlds longest subway platform. it is so long that they have made it three official stops.
Holy cow, you weren't kidding!
One of the stops on that platform are no longer used, the station has been closed so trains don’t stop there.
Blue Line also has a long subway platform
@@atomstarfireproductions8695 Washington. That was the 4th stop. It's skipped in the video and you can see steps closed off. There are now only 3.
Funny thing, 3 subway stations shares the same plattform and one can go to the next one.
Those 3 stations make up the longest subway platform in the world.
I remember as a kid riding the Subway and wondering why I never saw the Chicago River thinking we would go over it like under one of the street bridges and that is when I learned the Subway trains actually go under the river
I remember when this line first came into service in 1969. It was called the "Lake/Dan Ryan"...had skip stops...63rd, and 47th were "A" stops, Garfield was a "B" stop, as was Cermak/Chinatown. First cars used were the green and white 2000 series cars. Really liked those cars...well lit, roomy, smooth ride...not like the 6000 series (still remember the "jolt" when that train started. I started taking this train on a regular basis in 1973 when I was going to high school. I think it was around the time I graduated is when the 2000's were phased out by the 2200's...still good cars, but the steel gray just wasn't pleasing to my eyes!!! Now I drive...many times past the Blue and Red lines. Recently, because of these videos...I went to the Loop, and rode the Brown line to the end. Another time, rode the Brown line tto Fullerton (wasn't about to get off on Belmont...that area has always been crazy!!!) and transferred to Thorndale (rail and restaurant hopping!!!) Hoping to explore the Pink line before the weather gets too cold!!!
i miss the cars with the folding doors from the 80s
It changed from Lake-Dan ryan around 1992 or so, and switched with the old Englewood-Jackson Park-Howard line at Cermak.
And what I really liked about the old cars was...you could open the windows. Even during the hottest summers, and without air conditioning, the rides seemed more enjoyable (perhaps because the adult fare was only $0.25).
many thanks for making these journeys so far I have travelled in uk Holland france aus where I live I am from the uk many thanks again
The Holland streetcar rides are nice as are the streetcars.
I love the courtesy the drivers give to the workers on the ground! I know it's required, but nothing is really stopping them front blowing by at full speed. Nice and slow with a few little whistle toots.
47:08 Is music to my ears! That rapid clacking is the sound of making great time!
Chicago, is such a big City. I’ve took the Blue line train before for the first time, but I haven’t taken the Red line 🦅 ‼️ 🏚🏚
OUTSTANDING!
Oh, the memories.
Wait. So the center is practically 1 long station... Wow.
longest platform in the world
3 (formerly 4) stations on one long continuous island platform.
VERY INTERACTIVE VIDEO ! (I just came from brown line)
So cool to be able to transfer on this video!!!
It might be the Red Line now but it will always be the A train to me. (A former resident of Princeton Park at the south end of the line.)
Nice video in spite of the flat wheel. Friends and I would ride this and the Brown line on sunday afternoons just for something else to do.
Happy 50th Dan Ryan line !
Great video...
when the tape is sped up during the stops at stations on the dan ryan that is more like Realtime traffic speed lol
Really cool! I play with wooden train versions of the CTA
The Red line goes through the Dan Ryan Expy To 95th street.
lol you can literally see the next station from the station you are currently at
As a former resident who rode the Redline daily, I enjoy the video. After visiting other cities, I believe the whole line north of North Ave needs to be torn down or buried. I would keep the line a Subway up to Irving Park. The remaining section to Howard should be rebuilt on cement pilars. It's just rickety and old looking.

they should do an updated version with the redesigned layout of Wilson station.
Yes, the station has been modernized, and the outlying, southbound 4th track that was used by the Evanston Express, now runs close next to the Red Line tracks. Unfortunately, the neighborhood (Uptown), hasn't changed, but has even deteriorated (cheap shops, dirty restaurants, homelessness), despite the proximity of the community college [Truman].
This was before that redesign of the station. You may have to watch the other video from 2019.
These guys really bolt out of the gate from the start eh?
38:00 This is washingon. this is a red line train to 95 and dan ryan.
Transfer to Blue Line, Metra and South Shore trains; City Hall, the Daley Center and the Thompson Center at Washington.
Not anymore. Closed to the public as you can see by the blocked off stairways.
@@blue9multimediagroupright it's actually taking up space for the Monroe station.
So, dumb question. When Block 37 was built, the tunnels and platform were cut for the transfer connection between Red & Blue, which was then mothballed and covered back up, were they not?. Should some signs of the tunnel construction not be visible just south of Lake around the (former) Washington stop, on the right side going southbound (around 38:00)? I see the covered up entrances to the lower level transfer tunnel and the sealed-off Washington-Madison mezzanine, but should there not be a giant patch visible in the tunnel wall where it was cut open and then closed back up? And wasn't the platform sliced and later rebuilt as well?
Video is way old, it's all cleaned up now. the block 37 stuff is on the pedway level.
I wonder what this would look like in 4K :)
Only if you have an HS internet otherwise 1080p is fine.
Cool!
Whenever the red lines run to 63rd and ashland can u do a ride the rails red line to asland 63rd?
How is the signalling done ? I do not see any signals, at least from 95th/Dan Ryan. Is it done with automatic in-cab signalling ? Thanks, Dog
+Casual Android Are in-cab signals active also in areas where block signals are still in place, like the subway? Can an in-cab equivalent of a red block signal stop the train the way the trip arm can on the older system?
All lines use cab signalling except at interlockings where there is a home signal to govern movement through the switches.
And yes, if you don't stop for a red cab signal or don't reduce your speed to match that what's displayed in the cab, you will get a penalty stop which causes your brakes to be applied and air pressure drop since the brakes are usually electro pneumatic. You won't be able to move until the train is fully stopped and the air builds back up to at least 80PSI. And the control center might call you on the radio to acknowledge it with possible chance of a write-up for a signal violation.
This version is actually better than the redited version of this video , Just clean up the smudges and it's all good 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Do the grey box-like buildings over the Dan Ryan tracks [like 55:41] have anything to do with power supply? Where is a/c rectified for the power rails? How far apart are these locations?
Those are for signal equipment, but can also contain some switchgear. There are solid-state rectifiers at multiple substations along CTA lines.
Is there any good reason why the return journey vid has so many more viewings? I think we should be told...
Ahh go on.
I like it

They should really add some safety rails at the edges of the viaducts.
That's what I feel, but I don't know why. They wouldn't make any difference.
What do they have the long continuous station like at 37:30?
It’s like 3 stations in one very long station. What was the purpose of that? Anyone know
It is 3 stations in one strip. They all service the same area, and you can even walk between them

Kind of looks like a ride from an old amusement park that ran out of money to update its equipment (at least the elevated portion). The lack of railings next to the elevated tracks, noisy and shaking train (presumably due to lousy tracks) and exposed cables right next the the side of the track bed do not instill a sense of confidence that this line is well maintained or up-to-date.
is that an emergency connection to the loop just north of chinatown in case there is a problem in the subway tunnels. was this put in during the infamous flood of the early 90s
i mean after the flood. it doesnt look that old
another question, why isnt the addison station called cubs/addison like the sox/35
When the Dan Ryan portion of the Red line (shown in this video) was constructed in the late 1960s, it was linked to the LAKE STREET elevated branch (West part of the current "Green" line). But over 2 decades later, the Lake Street ridership decreased dramatically, while the Dan Ryan ridership increased. Thus, to "balance" the ridership, the Dan Ryan portion was re-configured with the equally heavy part of the current Red line. Thus, that part you mentioned is used as an "emergency connection", not part of regular service.
@@MegaMoose1989And you raise a good point about how the CTA names its stations. It is a mystery, but I suppose "marketing" has something to do with it. Except for prominent places (McCormick Place, Merchandise Mart, Illinois Medical District, IIT Bronzeville, Harold Washington Library, Conservatory, Rosemont, Loyola) most CTA stations are named after streets: it is assumed that most riders are Chicagoans who know Wrigley field is on Addison, and not out-of-towners. I notice some UA-cam commenters are puzzled how different stations on different lines (or on the same line, like the Blue Line's 2 Harlem stations) can have the same name.
@@michaelbrinkers1145 Or how the Blue has 2 Western Stations.
It starts out in the winter, snow and barren trees, and ends up in the summer, riders ar wearing shorts.

Audio dubbing towards the end is really out of time. It doesn't sync with the video, really. I'd hope CTA could try it again, otherwise a great video.
I noticed that too
Would someone tell me who Dan Ryan is?
And so cool the Cubs & White Sox are both on this same track!
Dan Ryan, Jr. was a longtime member (1923-1926, 1930-1961) of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, of which he served as President from 1954 until his death in 1961.
But in these CTA lines does electricity passe on the third rail? Are they electric lines? Thank you so much
Yes, you can see the third rail clearly in this video
+CraftyFoxe I believe cta is the most beautiful metro in the world. What is the most beautiful station??
I think the most beautiful station will be the Wilson station. I read some time ago Phase One is done...riders are being redirected to other entrances/exits so the next phase of construction can happen. Wonder how the new Loop Washington/Madison station will look and how will it affect Randolph?
I'd say the most beautiful is Quincy on the Loop, complete with vintage signs and restored station house. Ashland on the Green line is also nice.
Agreed with Quincy. Going to check out Ashland in the near future...haven't been there in decades!
When was this video recorded?

Late summer I'd say... the deciduous trees still have their leaves, but light jackets are seen on the passengers getting on at most of the stops.

Yes, the worker in the median walking towards us IS entering a portal to another dimension. But since we all can see it, there is no secret. Chicago is full of such wonders. This one is probably a STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN (or a Sandwich), which is just as Jahweh intended!

Why was the lead car Hunting so bad? It also sounds as if there are flat spots on the wheels.
It sounds like steam train to me...
That's the electrical equipment making the noise
And the rails are not arrow straight
boom my building at 7:44 left hand side
Cool, for me is a difrent :)
See Japanese trains.
red to 95th

Wow, Wilson looks nothing like that today.
That was before.
@@jaywad8876ik the old original Wilson station get demolished and rebuilt to a modern station

Interesting choice of lead car with wheel with a flat spot. Too bad the trains can't exceed the speed of vehicular traffic-would be good advertising. They run much faster than before the rebuild, though.
i have been on the dan ryan stuck in traffic and seen 4 trains pass me before i reached 95th street. i wished the line kept on going so i could get on it instead of my car. if you get a chance watch Los Angeles green or gold lines and you will see the trains regularly beat the traffic. both are freeway running lines, well the green is most of the way and the gold about halfway. haven't watched metro washingtons silverline yet which is partially built and part of it is freeway running.
You're too young if you don't remember the Red Line from 95th taking you to the Westside Harlem/Lake....
You're really young if you don't remember where you'd be 60+ feet in the air on a curve over the building of the Ryan.

although the CTA Chicago L is not as awesome as the MTA New York City Subway, it highly resembles the NYC system. All of NYC L's run above busy streets and we have many more L's and subway stations. Chicago is almost like NYC but will always be jealous of NYC.
Keep thinking that. CTA is fine as is
from the end of the line, it's 520 miles to Memphis
Lol

MrSUPERLUTHOR hahahahaha
Noisy flat wheels
Not the wheels, something else in the driveline.
must be horrible living next to all that constant clickety-clack from the trains. Did you know, if you weld the tracks it'll make for a quieter, safer, and smoother ride? And you'd be able go faster than a bicycle
City must have gone through and painted over the graffiti the day before!
Let the sunshine in.
I'm surprise we didn't see any fights or arguments sense that's Chicago.
That's the far south side.
I have been on the cta for many years and have never seen fights or arguments. This is not New York thank goodness!
since
Have you actually been to Chicago? Worst I've ever seen was on a Metra train, some guy was intoxicated and was removed by the police.
