The mainspring in an M1 Garand (however it's pronounced) is strong enough to hold the entire 9lb weight of the rifle by the thumb of an unwary operator for at least a few seconds when the bolt slams forward on it. I've seen it done by someone with the unfortunate first name of Tom. He didn't like being called Tom Thumb after that.
@@hodor1765 You mean other than the eight even louder sounds you have to make for it to make that sound? The Garand is even faster to load than pretty much anything else, and it makes an excellent bayonet fighting weapon. @@hodor1765 You obviously learned all you know from Call of Duty. Thanks for clearing that up. You can get back to video games, since I don't argue with idiots.
I just got an m1 a few months ago from a guy who didn't know jack about firearms bc his dad never taught him anything, I walked out with a win m97 and a garand chambered in .308 for 650!!!! Unfortunately there's some tweaks I have to make because it keeps ejecting the clip after the 2nd rd. I still need to properly gas it and change out the clip latch spring. It's a very odd garand, it's not from CMP to my knowledge because it lacks the markings on the stock and the barrel is completely blank, it came with the spacer so I knew it was 308 but It's parkerized pristine in a brand new stock. Def not ww2 but Korea maybe?
@@chibbacurley62 From what I can remember, the US Navy did convert some M1 Garands to .308 Winchester by means of a chamber insert, but my understanding was that this conversion met with indifferent success because the inserts sometimes came loose. As far as identifying marks on the barrel, you didn't find anything? And the stock was new? Is the Garand you have made by Springfield Armory? I know that back during the early 2000's, Springfield Armory had begun production on the M1 Garand again for the commercial market, chambered in both .30-06 and .308 Winchester. Parts used for the rifles were from existing USGI stock until exhausted and then they were contracted to be made elsewhere. These rifles were put together very well and were very high quality. Does yours look brand new? I'm only asking because you may have one of the newer rifles.
Awesome. I fell in love with this rifle because of my dad and his military service from 1945-1968. Growing up believing there wasn’t another legitimate combat qualified weapon. As General Patton once wrote “In my opinion, the M-1 Rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised.”
the Gerard is the once removed cousin of the Garand sporting a top loading 30.06 converted Chauchat magazine and offset irons. The bottom ejection helped with the dirt problem that plagued the Chauchat originally but the magazine still caused problems.
Came for the ping, stayed because two incredible content creators are talking about one of my favorite firearms. Love the content! #AKGNotificationSquad
I remember the first time I've heard about the M-1 Garand was in Mail Call with R Lee Ermey, and immediately the M-1 became one of my favorites WW2 guns.

With my M1, as long as I properly lock back the bolt, I can push an en bloc into the magazine and keep my thumb there all day, the bolt won't move forward until I release. Many people who get Garand thumb is because they don't lock back the bolt the whole way. I never need to slam the charging handle forward either. Awesome video.

@@dexterlacroy4132 The .30-06 is the most American caliber. Used in several wars, and is one of the most popular hunting rounds in the US. It is a very versatile round and can take down pretty much any animal in the North American Continent
I don't know how I missed this video. M1 Garand is the hands down rifle Americans need in their collection. I bought my Garand while station at Fort Sill, Oklahoma at a huge gun store in Oklahoma City for $167.00 in 1992. They had Garand, M1 Carbines, and I swear I remember both BAR as well as Thompsons in 55 gallon like wooden barrels. There had to be nearly 100 to weapons in those barrels. All weapons were repatriated from the South Korean Army, refurbished, and sold to Americans for a ridiculous bargain prices, which bring me to tears for not buying nearly all of those weapons to sell them today. My Garand is worth as much $2,400.00 since it was manufactured in 1943, fought/served all through the Pacific, fought/served in Korean War, served with the RoK Army until returned to the US. Good I LOVE my M1. Great Video!!!
I think Daddy was actually bracing Brandon, but Brandon did turn about so not to look like a wuss. Brandon isn’t use to such a powerful cartridge as the 30-06.
I've got to say, buying a simple Field Grade M1 from the CMP is one of the best purchases I've ever made. The rifle may be 70 years old, but it doesn't seem like it because it is so well-built. To forge a receiver like that today would easily cost in the $3,000 range like the Fulton Armory guns, but I got my CMP Garand for $700. That's a steal!
Over 25 years ago I bought my Garand, a nice Winchester, at a gun store for $350. About 3 years later ... everybody was saying "A GRAND for a Garand!" Yep ... a thousand bucks ... I tripled my money and I thought I was one my way. Then, a couple years ago, the CMP opened the flood gates. A typical riches to rags story ...
@@oddshot60 I basically stole a 308 chambered garand from a dude who's father passed and wanted to get rid of his old milsurp guns. I paid 650 and walked out with a nice US Lee Enfield no4 mk1* the garand and a win m97. I went home a very happy man lol. I kinda cleaned him out though the past month
@@chibbacurley62 My Winchester is a 7.62X51 as well. There about 3 ways these things came to be. 1. A specially built for the US Navy 7.62 Garand. These are kinda rare. Early ones were converted by putting a sleeve in the chamber ... which unfortunately could come out on occasion. 2. Same as above, but with a barrel chambered for 7.62. A better rifle than #1. And 3. A regular Garand that got rebuilt in Korea (Blue Sky). Some of these remained chambered for 30.06, others got new barrels chambered in 7.62 Nato. These were brought in by Arlington Arsenal, and can be identified by pulling back on the op rod and looking at the back end of the barrel. Quality of these was uneven, some very very bad, some very very good and a full range in between. Mine is one of these and a very very good one. I knew about Blue Sky and checked mine thoroughly before I bought it.
Although it's sacrilegious, it's also very possible to modernize a Garand. You can buy a low-profile optics mount that replaces the top handguard, flash hiders that screw into the gas port, and even synthetic stocks to reduce weight. I would not consider the 8-round capacity to be a major detractor, either, because en-bloc clips are so easy and quick to reload compared to swapping a magazine. You really can't go wrong with a Garand, lol!
"The grandfather of the AK itself, the M1 Garand" - Brandon Herrera Thank you, the amount of people I have told this to that refuse to believe me is astounding. The AK platform is a Capitalist & Fascist amalgamation. Kalashnikov himself stated he used the gas piston system from the lend lease M1 Garand's and adapted it to the STG-44 platform and in short viola the Type 1 AK. In fact the 7.62x39 owes its heritage DIRECTLY to the STG-44's 7.92x33 Kurz.
First rifle i ever fired was an M1 Garand. Back in 1966. My dad brought one home, in pieces, after Korea. We were at his folks farm in Georgia and he had it out. 5 years old. He helped me hold it but the butt was one my shoulder. Bruised up. Mom pissed off but i have loved firearms ever since. While other kids were talking about .22's I had bragging rights about .30/06. Times were different back then.
nice, a lot of dudes on the range said the AK was drawn from that German weapon, but to see how much the Garand influenced it, it is pretty crazy. Well I'll wager that the StG was complicated, so it'd probably easier to cop the design of the M1 for simplicity's sake.

My SVT40 holds good accuracy (okay with chinese ammo, better with soviet ammo and almost perfection with brass), can mount a scope on it with original mount (as long as it's a sniper SVT), or a milled picatinny rail mount to slide it on and lock. Although maintaining it can be difficult for beginners, you get used to it, the dust cover and slide are pain in the ass to get out, they can be taken out. I was surprised about the recoil on SVT40 compared to M1 Garand, it's very easy to control compared to M1 Garand, that beats the thought: "If the gun is heavier it's easier to control." With the gas regulator, you can pretty much fire any 54r rounds. In the beginning of firing it for first time, I noticed accuracy was shit and it keeps failing to eject (sometimes doesn't eject at all or the slide slams on the ejecting empty casing quicker), then I noticed the barrel was dirty to hell (most of grooves were filled) so I cleaned it harder with anything on my hand, hopper 9, copper wool, 5w30, flitz bore cleaner and so on. Either way, it all comes down to the preferences of the shooter, does he want the ping or not? Quick reload? M1 Garand. Controllable? SVT40. Maintenance? M1 Garand. Weight? SVT40. Modernize? Ehhh, M1 Garand, easier to get parts. You'll have to reach out for SVT40 stuff and they're pricey. Price? SVT40. Range? SVT40. Fun? All of em.

The mainspring in an M1 Garand (however it's pronounced) is strong enough to hold the entire 9lb weight of the rifle by the thumb of an unwary operator for at least a few seconds when the bolt slams forward on it. It’s amazing. The Garand fucks. Hard.
You could say it's the Garand-father of the AK

Great purchase,.......and I hate you,....lol!

"The grandfather of the AK itself, the M1 Garand" - Brandon Herrera
Thank you, the amount of people I have told this to that refuse to believe me is astounding.
I love how getting Garand thumb has now transformed into some kind of Gurkha kukri tradition, once drawn the Garand must draw blood.

@@masonhaggerty186 the one I inherited from my father ran fine. I was ignorantly abusing the regulator without realizing it. Probably would have had problems with it if I had kept it. It was like a draft horse. Did everything I asked of it but I couldn't afford to feed it.
@@masonhaggerty186 How does an SVT 40 perform compared to a Garand?
@@omarabe26 Quick points under wall text.
SVT40.
