I had a best friend who committed suicide when we were teenagers in the 1970's. They played this song at his funeral. Whenever I hear this song I think of him.
Absolutely awesome song. They actually used carry on my wayward son as sort of the theme song for the TV series supernatural. One of my favourites by them. I couldn’t agree with you more.
I remembered seeing a clip of Garth Brooks talking about Kansas after seeing them in concert, when he was a kid. He said to a friend on the phone, "I'm not sure what i just saw, but i believe i watched a drummer playing notes." That's talent.
My favorite tidbit about this song is that it was never supposed to exist, band member Kerry Livgren composed it as a finger picking exercise for his guitar practice. But his bandmates heard the tune and said "Dude you need to make this into a song", so he wrote up the lyrics in a few minutes. It went on the be one of the most well-known and influential songs of all time.
more precisely, it was Kerry's wife who heard him practicing in the house and told him it would be as a song, so he wrote a song which he took to the studio to show the band, and the band agreed it would be a great song. Kerry was in a spiritual search in those days and thus the dust in the wind is a biblical reference of the well known 'ashes to ashes, dust to dust' that is spoken at funerals. Kerry is lamenting the futility of life without a higher purpose.
Love this song! Kansas was a great band from the 70's. Their musical style is a fusion of hard rock, southern rock & progressive rock. "Carry On Wayward Son" & "Dust In The Wind" are their 2 biggest hits. But they had other good songs such as "Point Of Know Return", "Hold On", "People Of The South Wind", "Play The Game Tonight", "Fight Fire With Fire", "All I Wanted" etc.
Hi Millie. This is a beautiful song by Kansas.. Thank you for playing it even though you recognized it. When I was in high school a friend got killed in a car wreck and they played this song at her funeral. So appropriate. By the way, I love your hoodie!!!
I enjoyed watching and listening to your reaction of this song. The guitar arrangement in the studio was not one but two acoustic guitars( 1-six string & 1-12 string). In 1978 I was in 10th grade in High School. This was a favorite song to relax to in my High School days. *The blonde guitarist(Kerry Livgren)left the ‘Rock & Roll’ lifestyle to become a Christian in 1979.
Hi there sweetheart. Thank you so much for doing this one. I have always loved Kansas. Absolutely fantastic band. For me personally the best song they ever did was a song called “Carry On Wayward Son “. They actually used it and eventually turned it into the theme tune for the TV series, supernatural. thanks once again and please take care. Blessings to you from the UK.
Thank you for reacting to this classic song. This song makes me think of Ash Wednesday. The pastor tells us "We are told we came from dust and to dust we shall return." I have also heard this song at a number of funerals.
For a moment, you triggered my deepest unspoken fear, and I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep for a week, but then I realized it was just your accent and this wasn't really about "dust in the ween." *whew* Oh, thank God.
When I was a kid, when we didn't have the internet to look up lyrics, I swore the lyrics were "ducks in the wind". I mean, it sort of made sense, right?
A couple of decades ago somebody paired this with Cowboy Bebop to make a great AMV and shared it across the old KaZaA and Limewire networks before UA-cam was around ua-cam.com/video/o6UD9UvZxCA/v-deo.html

1977, this song was played on every radio station, no matter the genre. Brings back happy memories of my childhood
A Kansas Song that showcases their harmony ability is "Carry on my Wayward Son"..........

Great classic rock ballad. Quite an awesome band they were, i remember seeing them a few times in concert .... vaguely thru the haze that was the 70s.
The guy that wrote that song was Kerry Livgren, the guy with long blond hair on the left side.
Love the OG Kirk hoodie. Those Kansas band members probably watched
If you have not reacted to Wayward Son by Kansas you should....Different than this but every bit as good....check it out....
I saw an interview with two former band members... they said, "We're not in Kansas anymore."
😂
Kansas is an awesome Prog band to investigate further.
Beautiful song. Happy Sunday Millie

Dig the blonde hair and Kirk hoodie. Great, classic song. Great lyrics, so rare today.
Listen to more Kansas please!
All energy is borrowed
This Kansas cover of the Will Ferrell classic is great.
For a moment, you triggered my deepest unspoken fear, and I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep for a week, but then I realized it was just your accent and this wasn't really about "dust in the ween." *whew* Oh, thank God.
Listen to Kansas “Fight Fire with Fire”!!
you should listen to Every Rose Has It's Thorn by Poison if you haven't already
Scorpions does a remake of this song. And it's amazing.
I agree 100%
When I was a kid, when we didn't have the internet to look up lyrics, I swore the lyrics were "ducks in the wind". I mean, it sort of made sense, right?
How about reacting to Little Feat? Maybe Let It Roll or Dixie Chicken? Thanks, Keep up the good work!
