If they've eaten any true gumbo, then they've eaten okra. I've heard the word gumbo, when translated from an African language or dialect, actually means okra in English.
I don't have any problem with allowing a last meal. (But with limits) Even people facing execution in medieval Europe were allowed alcohol at the end. I mean, these prisoners have been caged like animals for years and they're finally about to be put to death. One last moment of humanity and human choice isn't such a bad thing. If they were executed immediately after sentencing, then I'd say just get it over with. But after years of just waiting to die, I say let them have a decent meal before dying. Not a ridiculously large or bizarre meal, but a decent meal.

Innocent people get sent to death row as well, and you need to be better than the real guilty ones as well. Providing them with a last meal is the least we can do. State sanctioned murder shouldn't be hailed as not good enough for punishment. Evil begets evil. The system produced them, the system then shouldn't be extra cruel to them.
It's not murder when the person is truly guilty. Murder means killing the innocent, not a murderer who deserves it.
I couldn't even imagine having an appetite knowing I was about to die.
Robert Alton Harris was notorious for killing two teen boys whom he'd carjacked to use their vehicle in a bank robbery, telling one of them to shut up and die like a man, and then eating the hamburgers the boys had purchased.

Back then, the condemned's choice was limited to what the prison commissary could cook up. Come the 20th century, with national brands and later national fast food chains, the requests became a way for a selfish a-hole to jerk the system around one last time.

All of the other customs surrounding executions-the presence of witnesses, the chance to speak with clergy, the opportunity to say last words, and the use of “humane” execution methods-serve the same function.

12:33 I want to say some states have a limit and some states don't even allow for requests. I.e in Texas it's no longer allowed for giving DR inmates a request, but the state right above it Oklahoma allows up to 15$ dollars, and the state east of Texas, Louisana allows for 40$. Just depends on the jurisdiction ultimately.
The amount of people that are sentenced to death that are still found innocent later on even still these days is so high that it would not be right to be hasty and merciless with executions. You can't bring an innocent person who was falsely executed back to life but you can imprison one for several decades if that's what it sometimes takes to find the truth.
Exactly, and I think Daz misses the point when he said, "the people they killed didn't get the last meal." Our job should be to be better than people rightfully found guilty of horrific crimes, not stoop to their level and "stick a fork in their eye and leave them in a corner for a few days."

DR inmates are allow to live like 20 years before the sentence is carried out. How about 1 appeal
within 1 year, then when you lose you're to meet your maker within 1 year.
Fun fact one of these men ruined Death Row meals forever. He ordered over 200 dollars worth of food and didnt eat any of it. So now they only allow up to 20 dollars.

Since 1973, for example, more than 184 prisoners sent to death row in the USA have later been exonerated or released from death row on grounds of innocence.
And knowing this any sane person should say: the death penalty is a fkin mistake.

And i dont mean by like DNA either, as that has been found not to be 100% accurate. But in the cases where the suspect admits to the crime or was caught in the act then its strait to the gallows

I see where he's coming from but the prison system in America is complicated. It's not so cut and dry as far as good vs bad people. There are innocent people in prison and there are many biases. Also having prisoners with absolutely no privileges probably would just make every prisoner 10x worse once they get out. There also needs to be some incentives while they are locked up to encourage better behavior. There are definitely levels to it
Timothy McVeigh bombed the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, Ok in 1994. Many people that lived here in Oklahoma City at the time still have PTSD from this attack. Terry Nichols is serving 162 life sentences at the Colorado Supermax Prison, in solitary confinement, for his help in the bombing.

My views on the death penalty is a bit extreme. First we gotta fix the court system, it seems as though prosecutors and judges are looking for a conviction rather than real justice and they have complete immunity which is bs. Anyways, once you sentence someone to death after beyond all shadow of a doubt evidence, they should go out the same way as their victims.

Okra is sort of like a chili pepper but not spicy, with kind of a sliminess when cooked, but in a good way. It's just a tasty hearty vegetable idk how to describe it. It's really good, and as others on here have said, it's origins as a southern dish in the US came from the enslaved peoples from Africa. Most southern cuisine has similar origins, and that's honestly what makes it so good. Southern food is a mixture of African, Native American, and European originating foods prepared using primarily traditional African techniques, and this blend is pretty much perfect despite it's tragic origins.

Why Do Death Row Inmates Get a Last Meal? The tradition of the last meal dates back to ancient Greece then spreads to Rome, where gladiators partook in a final spread before entering the coliseum to see out their punishment. It was then considered a celebration of life before undoubtedly heading into certain death.
The last meal is kind of another form of punishment if you think abou it, because it's like saying if you hadn't committed the crime that led you here, you could be free and eating like this everyday, but now you're going to die and this is the last chance you'll ever have to eat anything.

Innocent people have died on death row, some waiting right now. Recently the Supreme Court made it even harder to introduce new material on death row appeals. It further complicates my view on death row. Meal requests seem relatively harmless by comparison
I think the standard for the death penalty needs to be absolutely concrete, without any doubt of the crime committed. But once the verdict is handed down, you get say 7 days to appeal and the case be heard immediately and wrapped up within say a month maximum. If the decision is upheld and you lose your appeal, then the execution should take place ASAP, like within a few days. None of this bullshit of sitting on death row for decades. Thats just dumb from all angles.

That's all I was pointing out and many people have also pointed this out in the comments. In any case, I'm very sorry that your family has had to go through that.

The very few innocent people who are actually on Death Row were probably on it for years and years, way before modern technology we have now. Even if there are innocents on Death Row right now, it is probably from corrupt judges and is not a fault of the Death Penalty system.
Every single person on Death Row who is innocent would've just spent life in prison instead. Abolishing Death Penalty will not make these innocent people free.

What Daz does not think of when he thinks the death penalty is a good idea is all the innocent who are executed. In the United States alone, many innocent people have been executed. There is a project that examines death sentences and that has found lots of innocent people. There is no legal system that is perfect. If you have the death penalty then it is not possible to correct the mistakes. And research shows that harsh punishments do not work. Countries that treat prisoners inhumanely often have more people who continue to commit crimes. Then it does not mean that you should not punish those who commit crimes.

You also have to remember that 43% of American inmates are actually innocent of the crimes they are incarcerated for and 1% of our adult population in incarcerated more than any other country in the world and twice as much as the second most which is south Africa and 88% of those incarcerated are charged with non violent crimes and 67% are incarcerated for victimless crimes. In a prison state the prisons are lighter to account for those numbers if we only imprisoned those who are actually guilty and who's crimes we're those that affected anothes person or property we could have tougher prisons, my fiance got 14 years for selling a speaker to a pawn shop that someone else had stolen and sold to her she won't get out until November 1 2026 and it costs me thousands of dollars a year just to email and receive calls from her.

The current Vice President herself has on record denied allowing evidence into court that would have proven men convicted of crimes innocence all to pad her own conviction record. She did that multiple times and she's not the only one. Of all the people executed in the US since the 70s 1 out of every 9 have been exonerated of their crimes. The US justice system is insanely corrupt.
