Additionally, the idea of self preservation has to take into account that humans don't survive well when alone. It's actually in your best interest to find someone and/or something beyond yourself to connect with and to suffer the effects of not being the sole focus or priority.
I think he means that the contradictions or flaws of love aren’t even universally justified by some rational or practical end such that someone may be able to suggest that “love is the logical thing to do”. Love doesn’t have enough utility to justify the fact that it primarily involves allowing yourself to be hurt badly (think of that quote from Interstellar about why we don’t gain any utility from loving someone that has passed or is no longer in our lives). He emphasizes something like dying for or because of someone to demonstrate how love doesn’t really work for your self preservation (this works with a few other examples as well). Yes its kind of annoying I get they want to be politically correct but sometimes let it flow. I guess they dont want backlash
