  • This video sees me showing off of the new regiment sprues for Warlord Games Epic ACW and also follow the painting guide laid out in January's edition of Wargames Illustrated with final thoughts on the models and upcoming product line.

Nicely put together video and a nice paint job on the sprue.
I managed to snaffle three copies of WI and so have had a chance to experiment with schemes for both sides. However, I also had to hand a fairly large selection of kallistra 12mm miniatures which do not look that far out when lined up with the Warlord plastics (generally the kallistra minis are slightly smaller but chunkier, but this is offset by a lot of them having crouched poses. Also what I found was by adding a small piece of card below the kallistra pieces you can easily offset their shortness
The 60mm base may be an issue especially for crossover to Fire and Fury, but the plastic is easy to work with and splitting to 2x30mm bases is not that hard, just need to patch green stuff onto the cuts on the arms. abigger issue is the lack of command stands and as so far only skirmish and zouave infantry has been announced, it looks as if kallistra will be getting my orders for their command packs - and likley some artillery variants
It will be interesting to see if this scale is successful , if Warlord will try either Napoleonics or something for hail caesar. personally, I think the solid rank type bases are tailor made for the Seven Years WAr of possibly War of Spanish Succession
    keep well and keep gaming

Thank you for the kind words. I'm going to have to look into the kallistra models. I also want to put these up against some 15mm minis as well and see how they fit. It would be nice to have some mix and different looks of some regiments (I'd really like to do the Iron Brigade eventually) as long as they get put on the same bases. I like Hail Caesar, but can't get into it at 28mm. I would dive in at this scale easily.

Thank you for the kind words. It's good to hear others are working and experimenting with them too. I have the starter box along with one of each of all other boxes coming myself. My hope is to do a big unboxing of the line once I get it. The trick is getting it recorded, edited, and up along with everyone else who will be doing one.

Great paint job! Interested in how your Confederate troops will turn out since Warlord is using the same sprue. Not sure how I feel about that, hope more sculpts are in the works.

Thanks for the kind words. I think with the sculpts and color schemes the Confederates should could out a little better. Interestingly enough Warlord just announced today their next wave which will have Cav, Zuaves, and Iron Brigade along with some casualty markers. I'll be curious to how they turn out, but unsure of the price increase.

Why didn't WG make all Union soldiers with kepis??????

There’s been a lot of talk about that. But the short answer is the infantry strips are universal for both Union and Confederate. There’s other things that are noticeable as well like the bigger wooden looking canteens which were more prevalent in the South. And the knives on some of their belts (I think are supposed to be knives, hilt is off to be bayonets) which weren’t really worn by Union Soldiers.

Where can we get acw casualties that fit this scale?

There's a few places. Wargamingminiatures.com, peterpig.co.uk, oldglory15s.com, and many more. You can pretty much google 15mm ACW casualties. Warlord Games even makes round casualty markers that have numbers 1-4 on them so you can switch them out based on the number of casualties.

As an ACW reenactor, I'm surprised you weren't more put off by the hat-to-kepi ratio for union troops (or the over-the-shoulder bedrolls for that matter). There were undoubtly units here and there that suffered supply shortages, but your average yankee regiment would have looked far more uniform than these figs suggest. I know many gamers plan to cut the brims off the union hats to make kepis. Honestly, the use of the same sprues for both sides seems to show a lack of historical knowledge or a lack of care on the part of Warlord Games, but I'm interested to hear your views on this.

The amount of flop hats was a bit disturbing along with the blanket rolls. The sculpts def. lead more to Confederate troops (including the giant bowie like knives on some of the models). I would love to see more softpacks and uniformity to use for Union troops. I had thought of doing a little snipping and sanding but the thought of going over close to a 1,000 models is a bit daunting. I think their thought process behind the same sprue was at that scale it's not a big deal except for big Historians who want the look. Interestingly enough Warlord just announced today their next wave which will have Cav, Zuaves, and Iron Brigade along with some casualty markers. So it looks like they plan on expanding their range (even if it looks like the Zuaves are the same for both sides, I'd love some Tigers). If they weren't 10 to a strip, you could probably alternate some 15mm models in there and it wouldn't look bad. But as I said in the video, I'm kind of glad they are on a 10 man strip.

The ratio is not that bad for western union armies. But would need more kepi for eastern battles. I wasa liitle troubled by rifles being placed on different shoulders.
