No shade on Pat, he’s great, but most people seem to underestimate the contribution that Lyle made to Pat’s melodical landscape. I think some of their most beautiful melodies actually originated from him.
That’s a fact! Lyle was a melodic genius. His melodies are absolutely astonishing, and his piano parts are like no other. The man was a genius in every way.
IDK how they met and stayed so dedicated to each other, let alone THAT dedicated to their desired and achieved elements. Almost seems ordained no matter what other virtuostic piano, kybd, synth and organ player one might consider as a sub, even temoprarily. Not easy to express... "Lyle" was/is still a masterfully dynamic and emotional communicator. "RIP LYLE MAYS, brought us some heaven to this earthly realm"! ↲」♡ ↕↗

This song is my life. No matter where you are at in this song, the mood corresponds to that point in my life. Chronologically from beginning to a future end. The upbeat way it ends is hopeful.
Pitsburgh Syria Mosque, Front row mezzanine seats, 1989. Perfect sound and view. To see them play this album live before it was released was breathtaking, particularly the percussion! They get to where they're tossing instruments to grab another while letting it all cook until it explodes at the end with joy.
Not sure if I was at the 1989 one, but certainly miss the Syria Mosque, the Stanley theater, and all the other smaller clubs that closed but seeing PAT with the group anywhere was awesome. Last saw him last year (2023) at the Carnegie Library in Homestead.
I saw PMG at a small lecture hall called Mcdonald Kiva at MSU in 1978. We sat on the floor 15 feet from the band. I had no idea who he was, I was with friends who had only heard of the band. The next 1 1/2 hours changed my life on how I felt about music. I like a lot of different music but nothing comes close to touching my soul the way PMG can. RIP Lyle
Got to see the First Circle Tour. When they did "Forward March" at the beginning of the show Pat was up on stage playing guitar synth and everyone else marched in from various entrances like a marching band playing various drums and percussion instruments and I believe Lyle was playing trumpet. Definitely a show to remember.
I feel so lucky that I saw that show at Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City, they marched in from the back and then tore into Yolanda, You Learn after they reached the stage and finished Forward March. I still get chills thinking about it.
I LOVE the mesmerizing visuals for this video! After all these years, I've finally come to think of the Pat Metheny Group as simply "Metheny-Mays." Just Metheny-Mays. Without Lyle Mays' role, there never would have been the Pat Metheny Group we love. To me, he and his keyboards were the major component that gave their songs such layer-upon-layer of depth and emotion, along with the voices of Metheny's guitars and synths (and Pedro Aznar's vocals).
Love Pat Metheny Group. His music is so great for listening to when you're driving and chilling. Love the flowing effect it gives. Instrumental excellence.
Fucking gorgeous. Bought First Circle LP day of sale, saw the tour live. Pat made such an amazing mark in music. This track prooves the hippie trope, all is love.
Each and every time i hear this intro, i remind a sunny afternoon in Aix-en-Provence. A friend of mine and i were 16 and we were both hearing Metheny for the very first time. We spent hours trying to understand the intro. Playing the first measures, trying to count it, and repeat. My girlfriend (today my wife) is remembering this afternoon with those 2 poor musicians as an absurd amount of passion for something none of us could understand. This 11/8... And thanks to Take 5, we finally broke it. But i'll remember this emotion forever.
I've read the handclaps pattern is 3-2 3-2 2 / 3-3 2-2 but always have trouble "counting it" i.e keeping in time w/ it. A beautiful puzzle to me still. ;-) I say it's an impossible task choosing a favorite PMG song but First Cir cle of course must be included among the finalists.
Now I see I was listening to their music every day at their peak. Coming back to listen to it reminds me of something subtle but consistent from 80’s inside me.
Gotta be one of the greatest jazz compositions of the last 50 years. Great fractal-mandalas. A mandelbrot-set or two might add another philosophical dimension to the depth of the piece. But well done, just the same. A worthy labor of love in making this video. Much thanks from Japan! p.s ... My other favorite piece from that album is the ethereal 'Mas Alla' featuring the incomparable voice of Pedro Aznar.
Finally, some one made a video that makes sense with this song! This was the soundtrack to my high school years. I used to be able to play this piano part, and even got like half the solo right, but i was never good enough to get the piano solo down exactly the same
Pedro Aznar doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Absolutely pitch perfect without vibrato to me is astonishing! I haven't heard many singers with this talent.

I caught PMG during their 1989 tour. Pedro Aznar's last tour with them(if I am correct). Fond memories of being on the front row at Birmingham AL's Oak Mtn Amphitheater, and hearing this song live.
@@sunnyrhino Thanks. I have been lucky to live in areas that don't have a huge appreciation for Pat(or jazz, for that matter). Two weeks before he played in Lincoln NE, I logged into the ticket site and found front row seats for his Side Eye tour performance. My 10 yr old was treated to "the best band rehearsal ever!". Two times in my life, I have had front row seats to see Pat. Like having a concert in my living room, so close.

Transcendent. Up-lifting. Joyous. Buoyant. Brilliant.
This song is also my life... Greatest Pat and of course Lyle ❤

By the way for anyone not a music buff, those measures are switching from 12/8 to 10/8 and back.
Shall we then consider it 22/8 ? Being given this music to listen to, I've also been told that it is in 22/8.
No solo Metheny y Mays, todos los músicos son destacados y virtuosos.

Pat Metheny - guitar, Synclavier guitar, sitar, slide guitar, acoustic guitar, acoustic 12-string guitar
Lyle Mays (R.I.P.) - piano, synthesizers, Oberheim, agogô bells, organ, trumpet
Steve Rodby - acoustic and electric bass, bass drum
Paul Wertico - drums, field drum, cymbal
Pedro Aznar - glockenspiel, voice, bells, acoustic guitar, percussion, whistle, guitar, acoustic 12-string guitar
